Santa, dear,
I hope the package arrived in today's mail (I'm at work). Tomorrow I'm leaving town & won't be back until Dec. 30. I may not be able to get on to Mudcat while I'm away, either. I'm waiting eagerly.

I think I'll probably spend New Year's mulling over these clues & trying to decipher them. I'm a lousy detective. The only Franklin I know is Ben.

Pan made me a gift to give you
but off into the woods he then flew
chasing one of my nymphs
with the pipes at his hips
where he is now I haven't a clue.

But I'll catch him one wintry night
by a shaft of soft feathery light
and I'll send the fine whistles
(I won't enclose thistles)
Hope your Christmas and Hanukkah's bright

love, aunty artemis

PS hope you got your little song! You're so talented, nephew!

This is a message for artbrooks from your secret santa via santas secretary!

Dear Mister artbrooks:
This is your Secret Santa. Woe is me, technical difficulties prevent
my posting to this thread and teasing you with hints and jolly
proddings.
Rest assured, your gift is now in the mail and, with luck, should
arrive before Christmas Day!

best wishes for the holiday,
your Clandestine Clau

Ah, Burke!

Package one has been sent, you know. But I doubt that it will give you a clue to the ID of your SS -- or, as we say in Her Majesty's Service, no clue to ID your SS, since we like to drop prepositions.

In fact the ground is littered with prepositions. Bloody messy, it is, too. Needs a good sweeping up, if you ask me.

Then again, there are those who say that you SS doesn't have a clue either.

But there will be ANOTHER package sent shortly. And then, a special Packet o' Clues. But here's a clue to mull over:

"To feel the hand of Franklin reaching for the Northern Sea."

No, I'm not in Canada or Alaska at the moment.

posted this on silly hints but having just walked past 6 sealed up post boxes mayve here is also worth a post
SSs In general, if your Santa or Santee is UK based
be warned there is a postal strike that may mean things are delayed,(both in and out of the country) so if it is perishible,it might be as well to hold up a little and wait for the strike to be resolved, Will post when it (the strike) is or when there is more news.

Sorry for the delay, my darling SS (she said, sucking up). First I had the great-grandmother of all colds, then my computer crashed, then I was always interrupted at work so I couldn't sneak it in (then the dog ate my homework etcetc)
Anyway, I am 54, female, t-shirt size X. I prefer silver over gold, but appreciate beauty and craftsmanship over anything else. I love bright or rich colors (hard to find a bright shade of, say, brown).
Used books, records, casettes, CDs, videos or DVDs are Wonderful Things and A Very Fine Idea.
My taste in books runs to folklore/mythology, storytelling and suchlike in nonfiction, fantasy in fiction, and anything that's funny. If you live in the UK, I'd love anything bu Duncan Williamson or Stanley Robertson. If you live in Australia, I'd love anything by Kel Watkins.
Music? I'm a ballad junkie, but also like most traditional stuff. I was raised on opera, like renaissance music, bawdy songs, novelty records...pretty much whatever comes along except atonal "modern" jazz.
Other hobbies include embroidery, cross-stitch and latch-hook, so designing something for me to stitch might be nice (I can't draw to save my life).
Movies I'd like? Laurel & Hardy in Blotto, Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible, Peter Ustinov in Topkapi, Songcatcher (yes really), and if you're Canadian - the Arrogant Worms DVD of their gig with the Edmonton Symphony (as long as it doesn't go over the cost limit).
Again, if you're in the UK, I'd love to replace my copy of Taffy Thomas's Take These Chains From My Heart recording. And I just discovered Hugh Lupton a couple of weeks ago at the National Storytelling Festival.
When in Doubt, Edible gifts are always welcome.

Dear Col

Very embarassing this, but I didn't want you to think I'd forgotten you. Yes, it's happened again, I was picked up in another sleigh speed trap, and will be incarcerated for a period of time. Nonetheless, since I'll have precious little else to do but make sleigh licence plates, I'll be thinking hard about what to get you and will ho..ho..ho..hopefully get out early with good behavior, in which case you will receive your much deserved presents in a timely fashion.

To that end I would appreciate a more specific input re musical taste. For instance, just what do you mean by not wanting CDs that consist of "tunes, like in a session?"

Must go...another elf is here to see me. Mrs. Santa refuses to come, takes the rediculous view that I'm a disgrace to the family, and spends all her time blubbing in the lav. But I'm sure you understand.

Santa

At least I can do my own typing this year - no broken collar bone!

1) What is your age range? 52

2) Gender? Female

3) Favourite colour? Royal blues and strong colours (not girly or Barbie pink!)

4) Favourite authors and type of book? Old herbals and stories for telling.

5) What books have you really been wanting? Old herbals, most any sort of 'interesting' info books about customs, country crafts, social history, cookery (in fact most anything :-) )

6) Favourite type of music? I'll listen to most things!

7) CDs you've really been wanting? Nothing special.

8) What movies do you want? Don't know how to use the video player (Firecat does that!)

9) Tshirt size? UK XL, US L. (42)

10) Do you collect anything? If so, what? Dragons, oil lamps, healing stones, pretty pebbles and earrings.

11) What are some of your other hobbies? Natural healing (I'm an aromatherapist), storytelling.

12) Do you prefer gold or silver jewellery? Definitely silver!

13) Please include anything else you feel is important that would help your Secret Santa know what you would like. No sweet stuff please cos I'm diabetic.

Burke,

I just learned that the crew of the ship mutinied and tossed your tree, and a lot of breadfruit trees, overboard.

I'll get you something else.

Sincerely yours,
No, I'm not on Guam.

Santa, You're not in Guam are you? I don't mind the tree, just so I don't have to eat the stuff that comes off of it. Come to think of it, as a tree, it's pretty pathetic. The winter here will kill it, so it looks like you may have wasted your money.

Santa, I really do appreciate the thought anyway.

Oh me.

Burke doesn't like coconut and the tree's already in the mail. Whatever shall I do? Whatever shall I do?

Oh me.

Burke, I do hope that you'll like the tree. It's a tad tall, at eight meters, but it IS rather well formed. Please remember that it takes lots and lots of warmth and sunshine; you can figure out the hole size from the root ball.

Oh me.

We did get most of the insects off of it before shipping, but there might still be a few palmetto bugs.

Oh me.

Traditional acapella (like the Watersons), sea shanties, work songs, singer/songwriters who write singable songs (Lightfoot, Bogle, Keelaghan), indiginous music, fusion music, and plenty of other stuff I can't think of now. NOTE: the examples are just examples.

1. what is your age range? 46

2. gender? Male

3. Do you have a favorite color? Red

4. favorite authors/ type of book? I like fantasy, but don't read that much because most of it is tripe. However, when something good comes along, I snap it up. Military history. True crime and trials, especially British. Thrillers and espionage.

5. what books have you really been wanting? Can't think of any right now.

6. what type of music do you like? Traditional folk, particularly if it has really outstanding singing. I have come to like opera lately, especially Italian, but I'm not really an aficionado yet. Dear Santa,
Here are the answers to the hint questions.

age:50

gender:male

favorite color: earth tones

favorite authors/books: I'll read anything I can get my hands on.I'm currently reading "Red Dog" by Louis de Bernieres. This is after finishing a graphic novel called "Kingdom Come" by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. My tastes are a tad on the eclectic side.

books wanted: see favorite authors/books

Favorite music: My musical tastes are nearly as eclectic as my reading preferences. The only sticking points are Fusion and Industrial Music ( not from an active dislike. I just don't understand them).

CD's wanted: The second volume in the George Gershwin Piano Roll series.

movies wanted: If you can lay your hands on a copy of either the ORIGINAL "We're No Angels" (Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Rey, Leo G. Carrol, Basil Rathbone, and Peter Ustinov) or the British comedy "The Wrong Arm Of The Law" (Peter Sellers and Lionel Jefferies) you would certainly make my season bright.

t-shirt size: I always get large or extra large because they shrink down to my size after a couple of washings.

Collectables: I collect western string ties (bolos). I wear them on stage.

hobbies: none. I don't have time.

The closest that I get to wearing jewelry is the string ties. Most of the things that I do relate in some manner to the music. So, anything relating to world history (I'll read up on the history of any country. We're all in this together) would tie in to that.

Thanks for reading this far.

Happy Christmas. Merry New Year. Never trust a naked bus driver.

Stephen Lee

Hello to my Secret Santa, whoever you are.

1. What is your age range?
I've been on the planet this time for 58 years.

2. Gender?
Grrrrrrrrl.

3. Do you have a favourite color?
Yes. Mostly it's different shades of purple. I also like deep greens and peachy colors. Silver and copper colors are nice, too. Not keen on pale wishy-washy colours.

4. Favourite authors/type of book?
Love Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams (but I have most of them) and their ilk. I like weird humour, books on Pagan subjects, and science fiction. Oh yes, and Leunig.

5. What books have you really been wanting? Nothing in particular springs to mind. I like surprises.

6. What type of music do you like?
Most folk music, music with unusual instruments in - hurdy gurdies, all sorts of pipes, uillean pipes, appalachian dulcimers etc, high energy Irish music, good harmony singing, good classical music when I am in the right mood, and some blues and trad jazz. Hate middle-of-the-road and country and western.

7. What CD's have you really been wanting?
Mostly I'd rather pick them myself, but I'd be interested in one of yours, if you are a musician, or one of the Mudcat CD's.

8. What movies have you been wanting?
My son tells me he's giving me a DVD player for Christmas, so there are a number of movies I wouldn't mind having on DVD (assuming they are compatible with DVD players in Oz). Some of my favourites are -

The TV series of The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy
A Mighty Wind (haven't seen it yet)
Almost anything with Peter Sellers, particularly The Pink Panther Strikes Back, The Party, and I Love You Alice B Toklas
Harold and Maude and other movies worthy of being on the Weird Movies thread.

9. What is your T shirt size?
I like 'em loose and wide. I'm somewhat vertically challenged but horizontally enhanced, so to speak. Cuddly. Yeah - that's what I like to call it!

10. Do you collect anything? If so, what?
I like miniatures, windchimes and dangly things, things made of copper, brass or glass, essential oils, frig magnets (not too kitchy though), shells, unusual crystals and rocks, hand-made things - anything from your area would be great.

11. What are some of your other hobbies?
Tropical fish, gardening - particularly herbs, camping, pottering around markets, writing silly poems and limericks, trying new and interesting foods (hence my horizontally enhanced state) - that's all I can think of for now.

12. Do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
I lean somewhat towards silver - I have both - but what I like even more is a pink-gold or copper. Something with a mediaeval feel is interesting but I don't like really chunky jewelry - I prefer fine and delicate - dangly earrings are okay. I have pierced ears.

13. Please include anything else you feel is important that would help your Secret Santa know what you would like.
I'm pretty easy to please. Anything that reflects you, your personality, your music, your interests, your lifestyle or where you live would be greatly valued. I especially like handmade stuff and old stuff. Oh, and old single-malt whisky (hic :-))

Jenny

2. gender?
female

3. Do you have a favorite color?

6. what type of music do you like?
traditional folk, shanties, singer/songwriters like my friend John Warner (mentioned on several threads)& similar folk who write with a solid traditional basis, liek the Tolpuddle cycle. I'm not into songs that describe the writer's sad life & loves, & recovery from life's wounds. I don't like wailing western stuff, nor do I like loud screaming modern pop stuff

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Laura Campbell (ex-Ian campbell Group), cos my CD shop couldn't get it!! Or yours/your friends or other great independent stuff I can't find in my local shop.

8. What movies have you been wanting?

yes! lots of things - Teddies & bears, pictures of bears (teddies &

penguins; old interesting crafty stuff & impliments; small interesting
things - like old toys, old ornaments - from my local charity shop, or the el-cheapo shops.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
running a folk club; jigsaw puzzles of bears, or historical paintings, under 750 pieces (my table is too small for larger ones); crosswords; crafty stuff - a bit of knitting, embroidery, mohair bear making; photographing folk concerts & festivals; buying (& playing) more CDs than one human can use.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?

that would help your secret santa know what you would like.
I don't eat sugary stuff so choccies & such are out. Info about your
area is great (well, last year's Secret Santa, Giac, provided some great stuff about her area). Crafty things you have made.

1. what is your age range? 48

2. gender? female

3. Do you have a favorite color? absolutely purple - any or all shades of purple, but other than that: shimmery colours, lots of colours e.g. rainbows, or anything in the purple-blue-magenta range - but not yellow.

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Unfortunately for Secret Santas I tend to buy as many books as I can find by my
favourite authors (Margaret Atwood, Nevil Shute, Terry Pratchett etc) so there aren't many gaps left on the shelves
there. But I'm happy with second-hand/used books.

5. what books have you really been wanting? I've nearly got all of the Nevil Shute books now, so that doesn't help much.

6. what type of music do you like? Harp music written by Turlough O'Carolan, e.g. played by Derek Bell of the
Chieftains. Music is difficult because I like so many different types. Not really fond of Country & Western, though. I
love African music, Middle Eastern music, Gypsy music - anything with complex polyrhythms in percussion, even my
Leftfield CD's (techno percussion). All sorts of celtic stuff.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Anything featuring my Secret Santa would be lovely, or anything which my SS loves to listen to. The funny thing is that I don't like many harp CD's except Derek Bell and Sileas and/or The Poozies so that's not really a good option. I do want a Susanna Mildonian harp CD or the Flanders Recorder Quartet doing Vivaldi's Four Seasons (I'm serious!)

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? Australian video format is VHS/PAL and we have a DVD player but it would have to be playable on an Australian DVD player so maybe this is too hard.

9. what is your t-shirt size? Medium to large

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? No, but some of my SS's own art or craft work would be fantastic or anything artistic, e.g. an art print by someone like Monet, or a t-shirt with an art print on it.

11. what are some of your other hobbies? drawing/painting with pastels, watercolour pencils. Computer graphics,
digital art, etc Playing the harp (string-type harp)

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Either.

Being a lazy procrastinator, I've cut and pasted my info from last year, with some modifications.

1. what is your age range? Closer to fifty than thirty. Holy smokes! Looking at that in print certainly increases my mortality
awareness. But then again, I am also closer to 45 than 40, so now I feel better. Not.

2. gender? I'm a boy, but my mom won't admit it.

3. Do you have a favorite color? I like them all, in the right context.

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Mostly everything,'cept SF/fantasy and Harlequin.

5. what books have you really been wanting? You know, whenever I see "A Timeless Way of Building" by Christopher Alexander et al,
or "A Pattern Language" by ditto, I want them. But,I never pay full price for books, and those are very pricey books. Also currently
looking for international folk song music for children. And fiddle tunes.

6. what type of music do you like? Mostly everything, 'cept folk and blues. Ha ha ho ho hee hee. Just kidding. Mostly everything, 'cept
the new big hat country stuff and top forty stuff; and some of the rap and techno/dance/old school/hiphop stuff eludes me.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? none, really.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wnting? none. Unless "3D Prison Girls" is still in print. But I'll wait till I get a DVD player for this one.

9. what is your t-shirt size? I like XL, cause they will shrink. Something in a bell bottom would work. Does Arrow have a reverse taper dress shirt?

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? I collect foggy memories and disappointments. The tatterered remnants of questionable life
choices hang from the cloak that is my life like, um, tattered remnants from a cloak.

11. what are some of your other hobbies? I'm (STILL)learning the fiddle and guitar. Sometimes I rescue old snapshots from antique stores. Genealogy. Photography. Kayaking. Asking my cat who her favourite Scottish fiddler is - "Gow"

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Not much of a jewelry fella.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like. I'm interested in
your locale/geography/landscape. Where is home? What makes it so? What distinguishes it? What is important? Historically significant?
What is there about the place that I will not find out on the internet? What would you write/sing/paint about if you were given a grant? What can be found where you live that would not be available where I live? If I sent you a disposable camera to use and send back to me, film unprocessed, what would you photograph? Got a local newspaper? Something wrapped in that would be fine. Except haddock, unless the haddock is Fed-exed.

Happy Christmas Santa,
Bardford

1. Age? Getting too old to care

2. Gender? F

3. Favorite color? Earthy, dusty blues, faded hot pink.

4. Favorite authors/ type of book? Contemporary fiction: Ann LaMott (have most of hers), Richard Russo, Michael Malone, Barbara Kingsolver; also informal, personal books on writing. No biographies or science fiction.

5. what books have you really been wanting? Ann LaMott's "Joe Jones"...long out of print and just reissued in paperback, Bill Bryson's latest (A Short History of Nearly Everything), or any of his books except In a Sunburned Country and Notes from a Small Island (I have those).

6. what type of music do you like? Wide-ranging but picky. Just about any kind of purely acoustic guitar, classical guitar, blues, baroque chamber music. Folk, of course, and trad jazz, but again, picky.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Hmmm...would like to try a Way Backs album, also Sonny Rollins' Sax Collosus, Leona Boyd's The Spanish Album, Fred Hersch Trio, At the Close of the Day.

A note on books and CD's. Paperback and used books preferred, used CD's OK, in fact, a read or listen, and reaction to either, would be a nice part of the gift, as would a list of Santa's favorite books and music.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wnting? None

9. what is your t-shirt size? Lg to X-lg

10. do you collect anything? I'm out of room.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?   Folksinging, gardening, dog wrangling

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?   I've fussy pierced ears, so need silver or gold earwires, but aside from that silver. Like hoop/dangly earrings, and bangles.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like. Organic, handmade, natural.

Negative hints: Not into cute or food or anything that takes up much wall or tabletop space...I'm maxed out.

I'm not big on material goods, so any little thing that my SS would covet or find interesting, I would probably like as well.

1.what is your age range? Almost 53
2. gender? female
3. Do you have a favorite color? Purple; plum shades
4. favorite authors/ type of book? I love Dick Francis but I've read them all at least 3 times. I read a lot of mysteries. I like cookbooks.
5. what books have you really been wanting?
I'm a librarian and can get virtually any book I want, so I don't really need or want books. But I would love a "recommended reading list" from my Santa, especially mysteries or legal thrillers. A book you'd like me to read and then discuss with you would be great.
6. what type of music do you like? Old country and western, especially western. I love cowboy music. I am especially crazy about yodeling.
7. what cds have you really been wanting? none I can think of
8. What movies have you been wanting? None. I buy them for my library, so I can get what I want.
9. what is your t-shirt size? I don't wear t-shrits
10. do you collect anything? if so, what? I collect buffalo – preferably wood, stone, or clay. NOT resin or anything modern looking. I like pictures of them, too – painting, drawings, etc.
11. what are some of your other hobbies? I make jewelry, mostly with vintage glass beads and wire work. I love to cook and bake. I live in Kansas and my favorite pastime is to drive around the state, especially to little towns, so I spend a lot of spare time in the car.
12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? I like old glass beads. I also like 50's style costume. The metal tone doesn't matter.Funky is good.
13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like: Most of my house is decorated in a cowboy theme, so something appropriate for the house would be great. The theme is WESTERN, as opposed to south-western (i.e. not hot peppers and coyotes). Pictures of Roy and Gene and Gabby are everywhere. I love watching Gunsmoke and Rawhide and Have Gun Will Travel, et al. I like western themed pictures for the walls. Again, nothing resin or too modern looking. Tacky(like a snowdome)is good , cute/sweet is a big NO. But all that aside, I would love something from the locale of my santa, and/or something that reflects them. Homemade presents are the absolute best! Again, recommended reading, viewing, or listening lists would be very welcome. And I love tasty morsels - something you really like to eat.
Allegies: I'm allergic to precious moments, paintings on velvet, opera and rap.
From CapriUni
1) Would you prefer a serious or silly gift, or a little bit of both? Either is fine.
2) Is there one post on Mudcat that you particularly like ... I like the threads that get silly- things like "vouchers for virgins" and "funny-butt" and "snow-flies". I love Mondegreens.
3) one of your favorites quotes... I have lots, but probably as high on the list as anything (and it is in Bartlett's) is Sir Edmund Burke: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Whatever you do, don't waste any angst. I'm easy to please and I'm sure I'll love whatever I get.

Cut'n'paste from the last one 'cuz I'm lazy....*bg* (thanks CP for shouldering this again!)

Dear Santa:
I'm easy (don't let it get around). As far as Mudcat goes, I've been the delighted recipient of poems, songs and stories, a few books and a wonderful handmade bookmark, music, movies, a bottle of mexican liquor in the shape of a naked woman and the finest margarita mix on earth, and on one glorious occasion; a big box of rocks. The things themselves are precious enough, but the real joy is in the story of where they came from, and the person who sent them. That being said:
1. Age: 31
2. Gender: as girl as girl can be
3. Favorite color: dark blues and earth colours
4. Favorite books: poetry and non-fiction, in fiction: anything but sci-fi and romance.
5. Wanted books: oh, anything with a cover and pages...
6. Favorite music: Chanteys/OldTime/Bluegrass
7. Wanted cd's: nothing springs to mind, all is good
8. Wanted movies: none in particular, not much of a video person really
9. T-shirt size: Large
10. Collections: besides the mud on the floor and the cat hair on the sofa? ceramic bread bowls
11. Hobbies: art, reading/writing, cooking, hiking, gardening and watching the wildlife
12. Jewelry: if I wear any at all it is small and silver.
13. Other: for any of the English Santas, I can't say as I'd turn down tea...*g*

1. what is your age range? I'm somewhere between 44 and 46!

2. gender? Male

3. Do you have a favorite color? Not Really

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Prefer Comedies

5. what books have you really been wanting? Nothing I'm dying for but I think an excellent SS gift would be one of those pictoral books that "tell the story" of the area my secret santa lives.

6. what type of music do you like? If my SS happens to perform, some of HIS/HER music would be awesome!

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Nothing in particular

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? Don't collect movies

9. what is your t-shirt size? XXL

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? kids!!! There are twins on the way!!!

11. what are some of your other hobbies? I play the guitar and drums in our Church's Contemporary Praise Band!

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Gold? For $20-ish? Probably not!

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like   (Copied from last year's!) I would like it if the gift I got told me a little bit about the person that sent it. That doesn't mean it has to be home made, but I like it to say a little something about him/her or about where they live (see the book section above). So, whatever Santa decides to send, I'd like it to be something that perhaps they themselves would have liked that they bought, made, stole and decided to share with me.

1. what is your age range?
        44

2. gender?
        female

3. Do you have a favorite color?
blues (especially dark) and purples (likewise)

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
I'll read darn near anything, though I lean more toward non-fiction right now.   Irish history/culture, historical disasters, and biographies are my favorites. Books on the US Civil War are also good, especially offbeat topics like disguised female soldiers, ghosts/spooky stories, etc. Oh, and I'm studying American Sign Language with a view to becoming an interpreter, so anything on ASL or Deaf culture interests me.

5. what books have you really been wanting?
"Triangle: the fire that changed America" by Von Drehle; the new edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (can't hurt to ask, can it?); "Veronica Guerin" by O'Reilly.

6. what type of music do you like?
Irish/Celtic, folk, you know - Mudcat stuff. I'm big on soundtracks, too.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Nothing more specific than the above, really. If my Secret Santa has a CD, that'd be great! (Be sure to autograph it for me!) Or one or more of the Mudcat CDs for that matter...

8. What movies have you been wanting?
At this point, I'm a renter more than a purchaser. But silly as it sounds, I'd love a copy of "Finding Nemo."

9. what is your t-shirt size?
        2XL. One X just won't do it.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Books and CDs. If three of something equals a collection, then salt&pepper shakers (the sillier the better).

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Cross-stitch, decoupage, and writing. Supplies for any of them would be great.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Silver. All silver, all the time.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like
I'm not big on seasonal Christmas stuff - I either forget to unpack it and bring it out, or it never gets put away. Chocolate is always good. Handmade things are really cool, so don't feel like you have to fight the mall crowds for a prezzie. Something unique to your neck of the woods would be neat, too. (My current woods is San Diego, California.)

... and CapriUni's three questions:

1) Would you prefer a serious or silly gift, or a little bit of both?
A bit of both. I have a wacky sense of humor if that helps. "Cute" is right out, though: no fluffy         bunnies or Precious Moments stuff, please. Gaakkk!!

2) Is there one post on Mudcat that you particularly like (either from yourself or someone else), or that you think somehow "hits the nail on the head" about something? If so, can you point me to it?
How about this thread: Music of US Civil War & Irish Immigrants

3) And/or: Is one of your favorites quotes something I can find in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations? And can you point me to it?
Geez, anything by Mark Twain. My current favorite is: "Supposing is good, but finding out is better." Fits with my being a librarian.

Hey, I just found the perfect presents, but I think they're just a tad outside the price range: the mer-made is only $10,000 and the shadow garden is a steal at $50,000.

I am male, of an appropriate age to remember Lonnie Donegan and the Rolling Stones.
I like just about anything, and am particuarly interested in anything that reflects the locality where my Secret Santa lives, music, food, photos, history, whatever(unless they live in Hull. I would of course expect the price limit on presents to be observed in normal circumstances, but if my SS is an eccentric millionaire a nice Martin D28 would be good: or a small island somewhere not too hot or too cold(with at least one bar and a small hill to climb).

I think half the fun of getting gifts is seeing how the giver makes his/her choices...I do not generally like it when families etc. announce exactly what they want so they know exactly what they'll get...that said, with people who have never met each other, knowing at least a few surefire gifts is helpful...

glad to be participating this year after a year off!

Okay, here's last year's hint, revised a bit:

1. what is your age range?
Let's see, I've been just about every age up to and including 54, but I'm doing research on ages I haven't yet attained.

2. gender?
Goddess, fer-pete's-sake

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Blue, green, blue green, purple, bluish purple, magenta. I avoid orange except in things I eat.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Richard Halliburton, vintage travel or exploration books, books by or about journalists (just finished George Seldes' "Witness to a Century"), Spider Robinson, Nick Bantock, Elizabeth Peters, Carl Hiaasen, books about words and language . . .

5. what books have you really been wanting?
"Woven Together in York County, Maine: A History 1865-1990" by Madge Baker, but it's out of the price range. (Ayuh, same as last year.)

6. what type of music do you like?
Everything from Louis Killen to Louis Prima, shanties and occupational songs to Manhattan Transfer and caberet.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
How about somebody local (to you) whom I may not be aware of or Mudcatish and haven't been able to afford (Big Mick, Jed Marum, the list goes on -- got Rick Fielding CDs last year!!!).

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
"The Secret Garden" -- 1949 version with Margaret Sullivan or "Wisconsin Death Trip". Then there's "Morgan, A Suitable Case for Treatment" but it's not available. Or "Last Polka" with the Schmenge Brothers, also unavailable and my pirated copy was loaned and never returned. (Sigh.)

9. what is your t-shirt size?
H for homungus (I like 'em roomy). I'm goddess-shaped, so 3X at least.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Maps, hippocampuses, rubber squid, rubberstamps and printing paraphernalia, skulls and interesting bones, rocks, shells, green men . . . collections.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Gravestone rubbing and research on gravestone carvers, learning how to cut slate, gardening, needlepoint

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Silver

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like
Maybe later . . . if I think of anything. Oh, I'm a sucker for fancy scented bath stuff.

Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.
I'm allergic to penicillin and blue mussels -- and carnations, not that I think this will really help my SS (Aw, no marinated blue mussels!). And I really don't care for the color orange unless it's edible or a flower up against a blue or purple back drop.

Okay, there it is, revised for the coming year.

Linn

Okay, as a Secret-Santa-to-be, here are a few questions that I'd like answered, to help me find and/or make the perfect gift for my Santee-to-be:

1) Would you prefer a serious or silly gift, or a little bit of both?

2) Is there one post on Mudcat that you particularly like (either from yourself or someone else), or that you think somehow "hits the nail on the head" about something? If so, can you point me to it?

3) And/or: Is one of your favorites quotes something I can find in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations? And can you point me to it?

Thank you.

Patchwork is the piecing together part. Quilting is the top stitching.

Most people like the patchwork part - I'm contrary. But it does make me popular with patchworkers ... !

I also prefer not to use a machine so - to return to the Hints - I suppose needle cases and other accessories would also be most welcomed prezzies!

I'm with Amos. Apart from being a year older, and no wiser, my hints still hold water.

I wouldn't mind one of the Mudcat CDs (and I'm sure that Amos will be refreshing his buy-now-buy-often pitch!) or the 'Cat Cookbook. I've also started on a patchwork course ... but I think I'm more of a quilter at heart.

And I'm not big on 'twee' - that is, hearts 'n' flowers 'n' fluffy kitties kinda stuff.

Oh - and I like nuts of all descriptions.

82 days to Christmas by my count ...

1. what is your age range?
30's

2. gender?
Female

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Is black a color? I'm happy with dark, clear colors, like gem tones.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Sci-Fi and intelligent fantasy, historical fiction (but not historical romance), medieval history, Appalachian history (but not Civil War), and books with big genealogical charts or pretty period paintings of people in costume in the them.

5. what books have you really been wanting?
Don't even try fiction. I'll probably own it already. You could go for a musical reference book and I haven't bought any history in several months.

6. what type of music do you like?
Blues pretty consistantly, bluegrass when it isn't too whiny, rockabilly, some rock but nothing like today's pop junk.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
The new Old Blind Dogs, the newest Sting, anything Johnny Cash, Emmylou's Stumble Into Grace

8. What movies have you been wanting?
I haven't really; I already bought them.

9. what is your t-shirt size?
A women's medium. If it's a guy's size or unisex, forget it -- it won't fit unless it's a tent.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Erm... no. Well, crate labels, when I find good ones with animals or nice fruit or castles and stuff on them.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, sewing complex Ren Faire costumes for others but I don't care to go much myself, genealogy, violin, mandolin, and spending way too much time working on the house.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Silver, but I can't wear cheap earrings. If it's not really gold or silver, please don't they'll just make me swell up. Cheap necklaces and fine. I don't wear bracelets, but am amenable to rings and toe rings.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like
Food presents are good, but I'm allergic to onions and everything related to onions except garlic. REALLY allergic. I have a guitar in need of a pretty big repair and a cheap mando that could use a better setup. The cat likes small rolly bouncy lightweight toys but I hate lots of stuff with kitties on it. I have a small backyard pond that could use a water lily and a couple of snails. Candles and stuff that burns is good or lanterns and holders. My decor is southwest, but not ranchero -- Mission will fit in but it's more Spanish Colonial. I hate cheesy stuff with flowers and unnecessary glittery bits but really like quality metals and finishes. I like old photographs and am learning to appreciate old Scotch. I also like trying out new beers; amber to medium dark is my preferred range.

1. what is your age range?

Chronological age is irrelevant, but since you asked, I'll be 40 in January. Don't let that be too strong and influence on you, however, I am amused by things geared for ages 10 and up.... In other words, I still like getting toys as presents!

2. gender?

   Female.

3. Do you have a favorite color?

I like them all. But if you want to get me something to wear, pastels make me look sickly. I prefer jewel- and earth-tones.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?

I love fantasy, as long as it's not "Sword and Sorcery" (if you don't know what that means, those are generally the ones with covers graced by women with heaving bosoms, and some sort of mythical beast in the background). I also like folklore and folktales, humor, children's and young adult novels, and mysteries.

5. what books have you really been wanting?

I have been told by several friends that I must read Gaimon's Sandman series of graphic novels... But if you really like a book (any book), and want to pass it along, I will most likely enjoy it too...

6. what type of music do you like?

Nearly everything in moderation, except atonal modern classical and modern jazz, or hard, punk stuff...

7. what cds have you really been wanting?

   Surprise me!

8. What movies have you been wanting?

Can't use movies, as my vcr's dead...

9. what is your t-shirt size?

   Large to extra large

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?

Stories, cheesy jokes, ideas... things I can carry around in my head...

11. what are some of your other hobbies?

I dabble in decorating clothes, drawing, and basically live on the 'Net... I used to ride horses fairly regularly, but I haven't done that in years.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?

Don't wear jewelry, as a rule (I'll occasionally wear a pin on a shirt). I could go with either.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

I am easily amused -- really! But anything "cutesy" can get on my nerves Very quickly.
