I have wanted CA to be two states my entire voting life. We could finance NO CA by selling water down south. Let THEM deal with that fathead. If you look at the map, not much of MY area had anything to do with him. We were all ANTI recall.

canada looks better every day..
scary to think there are enough
people here to make such a travesty
occur! At least Bustamonte is still
there-i heard him quoted as saying:
I know you like to go all around the world
and make movies, Mr. S. so go ahead and do
that i will stay here and take care of business.

I had hoped that the last minut news of A.S.'s
actions would bring people to their senses.
too bad.

It should be noted that in the classic Pogo cartoon the line Greg quotes - "We have met the enemy, and he is us" - is printed in capital letters. This perhaps makes a significant difference so far as the last two letters are concerned...

Where is Tom Lehrer when we need him? (Er, California, last time I read about him!) Remember his song about Senator Murphy? "Now we have a senator who can really sing and dance!" That was before Reagan was actually elected President, mind you. By then it had all gone to Hell in a handbasket and Lehrer had stopped writing.

California Democrats need some sort of powerful painkiller with such a double whammy--those of us in Texas know how you're feeling--when Dubya made the leap from Governor to Resident, we wondered what on earth kind of insanity had swept the place (though we recognized the Reagan touch on that Supreme Court that appointed him). Now you still have that meathead as Resident, and Ah-nold heading for the governor's seat. Nothing exquisite about that agony! (Lehrer again. . .)

On the other hand, if Garrison Keillor responds to Arnold the way he did to Jessie Ventura, I'm going to enjoy Prairie Home Companion for the next few years. I sometimes wondered if Keillor single-handedly shamed him out of office. In this instance, I find it appropriate that Keillor takes on an unarmed opponent. :)

Greg F, i resent you labeling me. I protested the recall, and certainly had no use for a fathead movie actor. Don't even BEGIN to judge people you don't know. We are screwed enough, just by having this clown in office. The only saving grace.........enough of the prior administration, including Bustamonte, are still in place to thwart him. I'm scared........this idiot doesn't even know the ramifications of any decisions that he might make.

Greg F -- sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

It's a dumbass thing to say because it's a slogan, a soundbite, a platitude, a hoary old saw. What's worse, it's unhelpful, it's not constructive criticism, and it does nothing to address the burning question: What are we going to do to turn this shit around?!

I must admit, though, that today I feel like it's hopeless...

Cheers,
Michael

Or, to put it differently, one big Arnold film series running as an interactive serial movie.

I see Michael Moore has been talking up Oprah Winfrey as the one to beat Bush. After this, why not. She's a much more convincing star for that kind of job.

I still think Howard the Duck should have made it when he ran fpor President.

No, Arnold's not dumb.

As for the sexual harrassment goes, believe every word of it. It's been one of those known but ignored things in Hollywood for at least 15 years that I know of, but probably for more. You just don't mess with the big star no matter what they do or do to you, and a woman who complains is fired, blacklisted, and lucky to find a job typing orders at the local U-Haul. I was advised to stay far away from Arnold years ago, and have heard much more chilling stories than those in the press from women I know and trust who have worked with him.

Suddenly I'm glad I'm back in La-La land, since Arnold is going to Sacramento!

Amos, this is to try to make you feel better.

I once heard Ahhh..nold on (if you'll excuse me) Howard Stern's show and Howard was going on about how "HOT" Maria Shriver was. Arnold didn't get angry or say anything nasty, but very quietly, without Howard noticing, swayed Howard off to another direction in conversation. Hard to do with Howard. I was very impressed and I remember thinking that maybe Ahhh..nold had some intellegence behind that braun. And I don't mean in his buttocks. My impression of all these woman suddenly coming forward was a political ploy. It only annoyed me.

There might be some hope.

Kevin:

An interesting and unsettling question indeed.

The problem with power-appeasers is they don't vote the future.

In a sense this might have been predictable -- the Baby Boom, now graying, is slipping in to its reactionary phase, where the ballot is turned more by the sacroiliac than the heart.

I only hope he will turn out to be a bit stronger than he looks. For all his physical accomplishments, he has always struck me as an appeaser.

Here's to the future -- bring 'em on!!

Seems that the majority of voters want Arnold

Strictly speaking that's not true - 48% is not a majority. But close to one.

The really scary thing is that the future of the planet is in the hnads of people who can do this kind of thing. That isn't anti-American. There are probably other countries where voters are just as naive and strange - but fortunately they aren't in a position to destroy the world.

This looks like being a most peculiar century were in now. What the hell is waiting for us up ahead?

Well -- hell. I don't agree with the recall. And I don't agree witht he choice of the movie-sodden masses. I do not believe it was well thought out.

That said, perhaps, given he is characterized as a man who habitually wins at what he does, that he will do some good for the state of California.

It is unfortunate that a Republican has been slotted in to California. It makes me want to check out Portugal or the Greek Islands. I am afraid it is going to set up a satanic correspondence between the Kenneth Lay-Pete Wilson Axis and the forces of the Dark House represented by Resident W.

I really hope I am wrong this time.

When it comes to this, I shall prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty...where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.(Aug 24, 1855)

and

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time, or die by suicide.(Jan 3, 1838)

Well, at least Arnold won it with a reasonable number of votes. Projections show the recall won with 54 percent of the vote, which means 46 percent voted against the recall and for Gray Davis.
Arnold won with 48 percent of the vote. Cruz Bustamante had only 33 percent of the vote, so Arnold could have squeaked in with a mere 34 percent of the vote - which would have been an outrage.
Seems that the majority of voters want Arnold.
That stinks.

Quite right, Bill D. A van parked in my condo complex encourages recalling Davis and voting for A.S. because of 9/11. ?! (Er, the Nazi's will save us from the terrorists, or what?)

They also appear to be under the impression that Bustamonte is being recalled, too... which suggests that they've never bother to look at a CA gubernatorial ballot before, or they'd realize they aren't on one ticket.

*sigh* Worse yet, I never got confirmation that my re-registration a month ago went through with my new address, so I didn't get to vote today anyway. I suppose that the Sec of State's office has been a wee bit busy lately and I'll cut 'em some slack for the slow response this time.

here in the U.S. we just can't/won't see it for what it's become

Barry, the operative word is won't and if they can't its because they won't be bothered to get off their asses and inform themselves and use their freakin' brains for a change. This shit isn't subtle- it positively screams "bogus!"

While I have to admit your point We truly do not live in a "representative democratic system" today & haven't for some time now I ask again: who's ultimately responsible for allowing and perpetuating THAT situation? Space Aliens? Or is it just perhaps the dumbass voters and the evendumberasses that can't be bothered to vote?

Wesley- actually, I was thinking of both Joseph de Maistre
"Every nation has the government it deserves." (1811)
and Ben Franklin:
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little
temporary safety deserve neither liberty nore safety." (1759)

Greg F, I can agree with you somewhat but the people of California no more run the state than the citizens of Florida, just as the people of the U.S. have no say (or a best very little) in what happens here. Yes I agree part of the problem is a large part of the voters are dumber than stone but they've been pushed & driven in that direction by a lot of different forces & coming at them from a lot different directions. The phrase "be carefull what you ask for, you just get it" should bechanged to "be carefull what you're told to ask for". We truly do not live in a "representative democratic system" today & haven't for some time now. We are being dictated by very big business, the media, the PentaGONE, Texas ranchers & a host of other blood suckers, we are no different than the dictatorships that we overthrow. With the exception that here in the U.S. we just can't/won't see it for what it's become. Barry

It's hasta la vista to $9 billion if the Governator is selected

by Greg Palast
Friday October 3, 2003

It's not what Arnold Schwarzenegger did to the girls a decade back that should raise an eyebrow. According to a series of memoranda our office obtained today, it's his dalliance with the boys in a hotel room just two years ago that's the real scandal.

The wannabe governor has yet to deny that on May 17, 2001, at the
Peninsula Hotel in Los Angeles, he had consensual political intercourse with Enron chieftain Kenneth Lay. Also frolicking with Arnold and Ken was convicted stock swindler Mike Milken.

Now, thirty-four pages of internal Enron memoranda have just come
through this reporter's fax machine tell all about the tryst between
Maria's husband and the corporate con men. It turns out that
Schwarzenegger knowingly joined the hush-hush encounter as part of a
campaign to sabotage a Davis-Bustamante plan to make Enron and other
power pirates then ravaging California pay back the $9 billion in
illicit profits they carried off.

Here's the story Arnold doesn't want you to hear. The biggest single
threat to Ken Lay and the electricity lords is a private lawsuit filed
last year under California's unique Civil Code provision 17200, the
"Unfair Business Practices Act." This litigation, heading to trial now in Los Angeles, would make the power companies return the $9 billion they filched from California electricity and gas customers.

It takes real cojones to bring such a suit. Who's the plaintiff taking on the bad guys? Cruz Bustamante, Lieutenant Governor and reluctant leading candidate against Schwarzenegger.

Now follow the action. One month after Cruz brings suit, Enron's Lay
calls an emergency secret meeting in L.A. of his political buck-buddies, including Arnold. Their plan, to undercut Davis (according to Enron memos) and "solve" the energy crisis -- that is, make the Bustamante legal threat go away.

How can that be done? Follow the trail with me.

While Bustamante's kicking Enron butt in court, the Davis Administration is simultaneously demanding that George Bush's energy
regulators order the $9 billion refund. Don't hold your breath:
Bush's Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is headed by a guy proposed by … Ken Lay.

But Bush's boys on the commission have a problem. The evidence against the electricity barons is rock solid: fraudulent reporting of sales transactions, megawatt "laundering," fake power delivery scheduling and straight out conspiracy (including meetings in hotel
rooms).

So the Bush commissioners cook up a terrific scheme: charge the companies with conspiracy but offer them, behind closed doors, deals in which they have to pay only two cents on each dollar they filched.

Problem: the slap-on-the-wrist refunds won't sail if the Governor of
California won't play along. Solution: Re-call the Governor.

New Problem: the guy most likely to replace Davis is not Mr. Musclehead, but Cruz Bustamante, even a bigger threat to the power
companies than Davis. Solution: smear Cruz because -- heaven forbid! he took donations from Injuns (instead of Ken Lay).

The pay-off? Once Arnold is Governor, he blesses the sweetheart
settlements with the power companies. When that happens, Bustamante's
court cases are probably lost. There aren't many judges who will let a case go to trial to protect a state if that a governor has already
allowed the matter to be "settled" by a regulatory agency.

So think about this. The state of California is in the hole by $8
billion for the coming year. That's chump change next to the $8
TRILLION in deficits and surplus losses planned and incurred by George
Bush. Nevertheless, the $8 billion deficit is the hanging rope
California's right wing is using to lynch Governor Davis.

Yet only Davis and Bustamante are taking direct action to get back the
$9 billion that was vacuumed out of the state by Enron, Reliant, Dynegy, Williams Company and the other Texas bandits who squeezed the
state by the bulbs.

But if Arnold is selected, it's 'hasta la vista' to the $9 billion.
When the electricity emperors whistle, Arnold comes -- to the Peninsula Hotel or the Governor's mansion. The he-man turns
pussycat and curls up in their lap.

I asked Mr. Muscle's PR people to comment on the new Enron memos -- and his strange silence on Bustamante's suit or Davis' petition. But
Arnold was too busy shaving off his Hitlerian mustache to respond.

You all better duck for cover, the shit's about to fly. I can see a Florida failure looming larger than life if the recall isn't put down. And even then that vote may end up being upheld & stolen by the courts. This country will never again be what it was & neither will California. Best of luck to you & everyone else. Barry

I have a friend in LA, who works in the archives for the film industry. This makes her a fringe member in the industry, but she knows a ton of people and hears all the gossip. When Schwarzenegger first put his name up for governor, I called her, and she said "wait till people start hearing about some of the things he's done."

According to her, both Arnie's treatment of women generally and his wife specifically have been an open secret for years. The man evidently believes that women do not exist beyond their physical aspect, and that because he is a man, that physical aspect is his to act on whenever he wishes. He has been overheard telling other men that they should just grab whatever they want, because "that's what the bitches are for."

From Court TV's Lisa Bloom:

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes me sick.

He's accused by three women of grabbing their breasts. In one case he allegedly reached up under a woman's loose-fitting T-shirt and groped her bare breast. In another, he allegedly squeezed an acquaintance's breast, and laughed at her tears that followed. He's accused of cornering a co-worker in a hotel elevator several times and trying to yank her robe off. He's said to have made the crudest remarks about the sexual acts he would like to perform on female co-workers. The most recent incident happened in 2000.

Did he do it? First his campaign denied the claims, effectively calling the women liars. Then Arnold admitted to "bad behavior" and apologized, saying he'd been on "rowdy movie sets" and was being flirtatious. (Of course, he didn't say which "bad behavior" he was admitting to. A rich guy with lawyers and PR agents would never do that.) Later in the day he backtracked to the mealy mouthed, "If I've done anything to offend anyone, I'm sorry" copout. He also said some of the stories were not true.

... The victims' stories are credible because they'd told them before he ran for governor, they've remained consistent, and they have not sought anything for their stories. The Los Angeles Times, not any political camp, simply followed up a few old stories and reconfirmed what many already knew. The Arnold campaign's flip-flops and admission to bad behavior only reinforce the credibility of the reports.

... I'm sick because I know that most people will buy his "rowdy" and "flirtatious" deflections and ignore the seriousness of these claims. "Rowdy?" Hardly. Rowdy is drinking too much beer and singing loudly and off-key at a ball game. Maybe cursing out the umpire. Flirtatious? Are you insane? Flirting is smiling at an attractive woman and complimenting her looks, giving her a wink. Sticking your hands up a stranger's skirt, grabbing a woman's breasts - that's a criminal sexual assault.

... I believe Arnold when he says he doesn't remember some of these incidents. Why would he remember? Grabbing a woman's breasts or buttocks, yanking off her clothing in an elevator, meant nothing to him. I believe the women who remember the incidents, because these events loom large to us. We replay them in our minds over and over again, trying to figure out what we should have done, fantasizing revenge scenarios, cursing the fact that we were caught off guard and didn't think quickly enough at the time. We tell our friends and spouses and agree the safest course is not to report.

Arnold, if you did not understand that being a rich movie star did not entitle you to proposition, grab and humiliate women, then you need to have less power now, not more.

The Republicans have spent a lot of time trying to convince the American voter that all politicians are crooks. Then they either don't vote, or they vote for someone like Jesse Ventura or Arnold the Barbarian.
The great thing about it is, that when Jesse messed up, he got to blame the bad old politicians for his mistakes.

I don't think that abusiveness is ever really behind someone.... well, theoretically it is possible perhaps to do the work necessary to completely heal from the patterns that cause abuse, but IMO, in practical terms, it's like theoretical "recovery" from any addiction--- one can be a recovering abuser, but not a former abuser.

This morning the Los Angeles Times published the stories of six women who say they were physically abused by Arnold Schwarzenegger as recently as three years ago. We've included excerpts from the article at the bottom of this email. The stories are shocking, but they fit a pattern of previous reports.

We're launching a television ad devoted to putting Arnold's problem with women into the public eye. We feel that this is a critical step that absolutely must be taken, but we need $500,000 to make this happen. Please help us fund the ad campaign by clicking here:

The stories published in the LA Times today are consistent with statements Schwarzenegger has made and incidents he's been involved in throughout his entire career.

If you think his personal views and behavior can be separated from his new career as a politician, think again: Schwarzenegger has not included a single woman on his economic council. In a state where there are tens of thousands of women in positions of power, there was not even one he respected enough add to his team.

Schwarzenegger has a serious problem with women, reflected in both his actions and his words. His own statements -- even just months ago -- paint a clear picture of a man who has absolutely no respect for women:

"How many times do you get away with this--to take a woman, grab her upside down, and bury her face in a toilet bowl?"
July, 2003 Entertainment Weekly interview, speaking about a scene from his latest film.

"When you see a blonde with great tits and a great ass, you say to yourself, 'Hey, she must be stupid or must have nothing else to offer', which maybe is the case many times."
July, 2003 Esquire Magazine interview.

"Girls became sex objects. I saw the other bodybuilders using them in this way and I thought it was all right...Whatever I thought might hold me back, I avoided. I crossed girls off my list -- except as tools for my sexual needs." 1977 Memoir, Arnold: the Education of a Bodybuilder

The stories revealed in the LA Times are consistent with many other cases which have been reported. Three years ago Arnold made headlines in the U.K. after a string of sexually abusive groping incidents -- one of which took place in an on camera interview. During the on-camera incident Schwarzenegger explained, "If my wife saw this I'd be in trouble, I'd have to tell her it was a stunt double."

Premiere, a respected film industry magazine, interviewed the women involved -- all reporters:

Anna Richardson of Big Screen claims that after the cameras stopped rolling for her interview segment, Schwarzenegger, apparently attempting to ascertain whether Richardson's breasts were real, tweaked her nipple and then laughed at her objections. "I left the room quite shaken," she says. "What was more upsetting was that his people rushed to protect him and scapegoated me, and not one person came to apologize afterward."

Apparently Schwarzenegger's behavior is an open secret in Hollywood. The same article quoted Hollywood insiders and Schwarzenegger colleagues saying that is typical behavior for the actor:

"You don't get it," said a producer who's worked with Schwarzenegger. "That's the way Arnold always behaves. For some reason, [this time] the studio or the publicists couldn't put enough pressure on the women to kill the story."

Arnold's problem with women is not a case of insensitive comments or inappropriate actions. It's an appalling record of disrespect and abuse of women. It would be a disgrace to women and a disgrace to all the people of California if Schwarzenegger became Governor.

The once-confusing recall election is now dramatically simple: if you don't vote against the recall, Schwarzenegger will become governor. Join us in these last few days we have to defeat the recall. Sign up here:

There is a commercial on the tube right now, showing Jessi Ventura sitting at the computer browsing through the candidates for Cal. governor and he says, "They'll let anyone run for governor of California."
I found that to be a humourous commercial. Good luck Amos, I had a wrestler for governor! (Although I believe he did better than the one we have now.)
Peace, Rustic

Well, I can't vote in the recall obviously but my three flatmates can and not one of them has declaired an interest in voting for AS thankfully. From what I've seen and heard in the short time I've been in Ca I'd have to conclude that if I did have the vote I'd probably vote for the Green party bod rather than any of the 'main stream' parties. I agree with NicoleC though, although I throughly disagree with his policies, I hink I'd rather have TM running the state than AS, but then, I've only been here a few weeks...

oh, man, will try to vote twice against the recall! Arnold is too much the clown.......takes such stances as "i support education".....how daring can you get, huh? Have no use for the fellow. Of course, i wasn't wild about our last movies star governer/prez, either! Since Barry Keene wrote the law stating that the Lieutenant gov would take over in the case of the govenor being unable to serve, and was told that "that wasn't what you meant", i've been going nuts!

Republicans with any sense will back McClintock, not AS. TM may be utterly wrong in his political views -- ;) -- but at least he's principled, consistant, and thoroughly experienced in governing. Nor have I really heard any bad things about his character or they way he treats anybody, even despite the usual mudslinging that ends up all over politicians.

Given that Republicans have a viable and worthy candidate, voting for AS can only be considered some sort of misguided delusion by folks who think that AS = The Eraser or any of his other movie characters. I'd hate to see Tom win, but it wouldn't make me repulsed or afraid.

Take a deep breath, Amos, and recite this mantra: "He can't be President... he can't be President."

Amos, haven't seen this news. Where is it? (not that I can vote in CA anyway, but I'm curious)

Does the phrase "Only in America" fit in here? At first, most of us thought it was a joke. Yesterday it appeared he just might sneak in. Hope this new (to us) revelation might stop him in his tracks. Keeping my fingers crossed, Amos.

I hope it works, Amos...as 'interesting' as it would be, it would also be a travesty to have A.S. in there, and California can ill afford two recalls...

Amos, good luck. My daughter and her husband live in California. My son in law is a born and bred conservative Republican who supported Wilson. I haven't much doubt but that he/they supported Swartzenegger- we gave up discussing politics and human rights some time ago so I can't be sure.

But they are bright people in other ways- my hope, since the latest news has come out, is that at the least they'll post only a protest vote in the recall. (Gary Coleman, maybe!) I would be not only mortified but repulsed if I found they had voted for A.S.

I don't understand why Davis is in this position in the first place. They say the recall is legal- but surely it was instituted to be used in cases of malfeasance and other chicanery? Surely not because a governor's judgments are not popular? I can't imagine any of the gubernatorial candidates having a better grasp than the incumbent on what can be done to bring California out of its current mess.

I realize this is a music forum. This, however, is amatter of overriding urgency in my opinion.

I have to urge you, if you have a say in the matter, to vote against the Recall in California. Not because there is any great virtue in keeping Gray Davis, but because Arnold Schwarznegger is as dangerous a man as could possibly be elected. He is a brutalizer of women, not just a womanizer, but one who uses violence. He is owned by the Pete Wilson circle which owes its loyalty to the people who brought you the war in Iraq (Blood in the Sand and Blood in the Sand II). He is big, strong, loutish, brutish and insensitive.

Do whatever you must do to block his accession to the Governor's house. Under current conditions that means blocking the recall. Because the combination of Bush in DC and Schwarznegger in Sacramento is extremely repulsive. I believe it is something that should be prevented if at all possible.

Thanks for your attention,

Amos
