Sylvia,thanks for posting the words of this song.
I transcribed them from one of my Brenda Wootton Cds converted from vinyl, but couldn't make any sense of the the last verse, which I mistakenly thought was
"Come on they're only gutsing fishes....".
Now i know the proper words, I can sing it with more confidence!

When I lived in Dorset one of the worst sights I saw was after a group of "grockles" from up London way after fishing of West Bexington beach walked away leaving at least 200 mackerel on the shingle, and I only had a motor bike and took about 20.
Grockles are just like piles,
They comes down,
They hangs around,
They turns red,
And they be a pain in the A**E.LOL
Tourists bring a lot of much needed money into the local economy.

It's one of Jon Heslop's songs, 'The Last Fisherman'. Great song, especially with lots of people singing the chorus.

Hanging Johnny recorded "The Rape of the Mackerel Shoals" on their cassette "To Pass Away the Time" (Purplefolk Records, 1998). The work also includes Archie Fisher's "The Final Trawl" and Max Boyce's "Swansea Town." They also gratuitously include sounds of the sea and creaking timbers ...

Did someone say that there was/is a recording of this?
If so what where etc ?
Richard used to be my form teacher for 3 years. Taught french, spanish and cornish. Wrote at least 1 cornish language book plus cassette (Tam Kernewyk - a little bit of cornish) and is a cornish bard I believe. I'd like to hear the song though, never new he was into writing songs. Used to have a boat though.

I have the tape ... let me refresh my memory banks and I'll let you know the song. You can also hear at least one Hanging Johnny member down the Top House at the Lizard and occasionally at the Cove Inn, Cadgwith.
