Sylvia, thanks for posting the words of this song.
I transcribed them from one of my Brenda Wootton Cds converted from vinyl, but couldn't make any sense of the the last verse, which I mistakenly thought was
"Come on they're only gutsing fishes....".
Now i know the proper words, I can sing it with more confidence!

When I lived in Dorset one of the worst sights I saw was after a group of "grockles" from up London way after fishing of West Bexington beach walked away leaving at least 200 mackerel on the shingle, and I only had a motor bike and took about 20.
Grockles are just like piles,
They comes down,
They hangs around,
They turns red,
And they be a pain in the A**E.LOL
Tourists bring a lot of much needed money into the local economy.
only joking.
Dave now in Wales

It's one of Jon Heslop's songs, 'The Last Fisherman'. Great song, especially with lots of people singing the chorus.

Save me starting a new thread, anyone know the lyrics to an excellent Cornish fishing song whose chorus includes

..out there where I have been.
Send my bones, to Davy Jones,
And my soul to Fiddler's Green.   ?

Hanging Johnny recorded "The Rape of the Mackerel Shoals" on their cassette "To Pass Away the Time" (Purplefolk Records, 1998). The work also includes Archie Fisher's "The Final Trawl" and Max Boyce's "Swansea Town." They also gratuitously include sounds of the sea and creaking timbers ...

Cheers,

Brian

Did someone say that there was/is a recording of this?
If so what where etc ?
Richard used to be my form teacher for 3 years. Taught french, spanish and cornish. Wrote at least 1 cornish language book plus cassette (Tam Kernewyk - a little bit of cornish) and is a cornish bard I believe. I'd like to hear the song though, never new he was into writing songs. Used to have a boat though.

From: GUEST,sylvia

Hi
Rowena and I sing this song. It's called

RAPE OF THE MACKEREL SHOALS
By Richard Gendall

If ever you are at the port of Newlyn,
Falmouth or Mevagissey, Looe,
St. Ives or Padstow or Porthleven,
There's fishermen with nothing left to do.
The mackerel they teemed around our waters.
The harvest it was regular and true.
Sufficient was to feed our sons and daughters.
Our little ships could work the season through.

CHORUS: You shoot your nets on either hand.
You bait your lines with caviar.
You'd just as well remain on land, boys.
There's no more fish out where you are.

But giants came from Russia and from Scotland,
Bulgaria and France and everywhere.
They scooped the very bread from out our hands, boys.
There's nothing that these pirates have to fear.
The seas that tumble round our homeland,
For thousands now of years have served us well.
Why should we now be so beset by brigands
Who legally are sending us to hell?

'Tis proper job to weave the mackerel in, boys,
Although your hands are bleeding sore.
But nowadays you get it in a tin, boys,
So why go fishing any more?
Come, are there only guts in fishes?
What happened to the nerve we had before?
Our Cornish hearts don't vainly beat on wishes,
But fight and ask for what you know is yours.

If you are at Falmouth for the Voice Tour the weekend 17th/19th October, you may hear it. It is a great singing weekend.

I have the tape ... let me refresh my memory banks and I'll let you know the song. You can also hear at least one Hanging Johnny member down the Top House at the Lizard and occasionally at the Cove Inn, Cadgwith.

Cheers,

Brian

Can't find anything about it sorry, but perhaps looking at the track listings of their CDs (click here for listings at Wooden Ships Music) might jog the memory?

"Hanging Johnny"'s website is no help- doesn't even have track listings.

I am trying to find the lyrics to a song I have heard sung by "Hanging Johnny"   All I can remeber at the moment is the chorus

You shoot your nets on either hand
and bait your lines with caviar
you might as well have stayed on land boys
there's no more fish out where you are

any help locating this song would be much appreciated

Malcolm
