I have also splashed out on a car hire for this trip and am willing to give a lift to or from Belfast City Airport (ie the little one on the north-east of the city, not the international one to the west!) if anyone is on the same flight. Flying from Birmingham International on Thu 29 Jan on flight BE406 (dep 12.20 & arr 13.20) and on flight BE415 on Sun 1 Feb (dep 18.45 & arr 19.45). See you all there! I'll post details. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 17 Oct 03 - 05:29 PM Eric, I can pay you or Barholm, does not matter. What matters is that it is quite expensive to send money from Germany to UK - so if it is possible to pay in Portaferry I'd be glad... Btw., if Barholm wants real names, see PM. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Herma Date: 18 Oct 03 - 08:53 AM Hi Everyone, Very tempted (with a little help from Eric....) to come over as well! Flight to Belfast from Amsterdam is easy, but after that?? Seen some buslines etc. on the mentioned website, but is anyone perhaps passing by Belfast Airport, or flying in any time during the 29th and willing to share some means of transportation? Haven't booked a flight yet, so maybe there's some way to compare (more)flying times or such? Won't bring my topless swimsuit, sorry, no room for the antifreeze in my weekendbag!!! Herma |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: InOBU Date: 18 Oct 03 - 10:59 AM Hiya Friends: I don't know if I can make in in 04, but I will be in Dublin on Dec 10, not sure the schdual, will try to get out to Kerry to see old pals around that time, so keep a watch on the post Mudcatters in or near Dublin, and maybe we can get together for a tune or three. Cheers Larry |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 18 Oct 03 - 03:19 PM Herma, I have not booked flights so far as well - might be interested in sharing. But I have not really decided - maybe I will arrive on Thursday in Dublin and take bus from there on Friday... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 19 Oct 03 - 02:57 PM Larry, I'd have gone to Dublin specially, but I'll only just be back from Croatia, and it can't be done. Are you including a stopover in GB by any chance? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: David Ingerson Date: 20 Oct 03 - 07:29 PM I am so jealous of all your plans. But maybe I will be able to come next year. I spent five wonderful summers in Ireland in the mid-80's but then got married--traded Ireland for a fine wife and eventually 2 wonderful kids. But now,my 15 year old daughter has fallen in love with Ireland (after spending two weeks there in 2000--my first time back, and not nearly long enough) and wants to spend her junior year abroad in Ireland, if we can arrange it. (And we are willing to do it independently if we can't find an agency to do it through--anyone interested in taking (for the school year) a 15 year old Yank girl who rides horses--C3 in Pony Club--is a competitive rock climber, straight A student, polite, and also punk-dressing and very individualistic, and learning focail ansin agus focail anseo (sp?)??? At any rate, if (or rather when) she finds a placement there, I will surely visit--maybe at the end of January. I hope, I hope. David |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 20 Oct 03 - 07:30 PM Or go to London and get a Ryannair flight to Dublin? (Sorry for thread drift.) Someone told me there were some splendid musicians from Bangor at Portaferry last year. Did they include Dianna Boullier by any chance, or Geordie McAdam? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: mooman Date: 21 Oct 03 - 04:09 AM Can't remember their names Fionn but there were an excellent husband and wife pair. Both excellent fiddlers and he a s**t hot tenor banjo player too. I got roundly castigated at that session for playing the local "finishing tune" before the end (how was I to know as a simple London-raised, Belgian-based Sligoman?)! But it was a bodhran player that did the castigating so I didn't take it too personally! Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Eric the Viking Date: 21 Oct 03 - 01:41 PM Wasn't it wicked! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 22 Oct 03 - 04:52 AM Fionn - spot on! It was indeed Dianna and Geordie (Nigel being the s**t hot tenor banjo player). Hopefully we'll see them again this year - I know Dianna drops into the Mudcat now and again. David Ingerson - if your daughter is into rock climbing (the finest of sports!) then Donegal has a lot to offer, I believe (never climbed there meself though). However, I there's no bolted (sports) routes in Ireland - it's all trad, as far as I know. Belfast, Derry and Newcastle (Co. Down) have climbing gyms, and I think there might be some in the universities in Dublin. http://www.climbing.ie/ is a good place to start. I can't think of anything better than arranging a year away around your favourite hobbies! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Letty Date: 22 Oct 03 - 06:11 AM Hmm, my first attempts at finding transport seem to indicate that flights from Cork to Belfast and back will cost about 200 euros (Jetmagic), and that the bus going via Dublin takes about 9 hours, and I'm not in Portaferry yet by then. Seems like I'm going by car! Letty |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 22 Oct 03 - 08:26 AM Thanks, Fib. Did Georgie stick to Irish tunes, or was he allowed to treat everyone to some old time? I'll see if they're planning to go next time. (Or maybe you already know?) Once again I know I'll be in Co Down (Bangor and Moira) for several days beforehand - but again, it might prove difficult staying on over the weekend. Incidentally Dianna had an interesting book published about Irish traditional and some of its exponents: "Exploring Irish Music and Dance" (O'Brien Press, Dublin, 1998). |

But I have now emailed Linda at Barholm to confirm that we will be there from Thu to Sun (sightseeing on Fri and back on Sun so that Sandy can work on Mon am). Really looking forward to it. Will be nice to see some new names too as well as meeting old Mudcat friends. MudGuard (not to mention the two ladies!): are you really agreeing to share with Eric the Viking and Skipjack? That sounds very risky to me! Remember: I shared with them this year and I have been a nervous wreck even since! Workshops, MGAS? That sounds a bit serious! What had you in mind? I'm sure someone could oblige! For myself, I think the kazoo workshop is the best idea - I have never mastered it myself. Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 27 Nov 03 - 08:36 PM Maybe at least a workshop where beginners learn a tune collectively on whatever instruments they have? Eric - indeed, mr skip has already mentioned his festival fiddle teaching experience - I await further instruction! Leadfingers - I reckon a mandolin is just fine. Make sure the noise drowns out my scratchy playing! Yup Fionn, the Bangor contingent are going to be there, all being well. Ella m'dear - I know about the Nova Scotia sessions but am not yet ready to unleash my dirge-like "music" on the world. Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 23 Dec 03 - 02:48 AM Eric, did you sacrifice a sheep at winter solstice? ;-) (in the way illustrated on the postcard I sent you?) ;-) Looking forward to meet you all (again)! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 31 Dec 03 - 06:23 AM Is there a cash machine/hole in the wall/atm/... in Portaferry? Just in case I run out of these pounds... (it would be much easier if you had Euros over there...) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Micca Date: 31 Dec 03 - 08:42 AM Andy, Yes there is, just opposite the Pub!!! now thats planning!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 31 Dec 03 - 09:21 AM Bad planning... When you need more money after some beers, you have to cross the street twice to get more beer. Very dangerous. The machine should be located WITHIN the pub ;-) But thanks anyway, Micca. Last time I was in Portaferry is too long ago - and I did not spend more time there than is necessary to cycle from the ferry to the northern edge of town (on the way to Belfast...). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: John MacKenzie Date: 31 Dec 03 - 09:33 AM I arrive at Belfast City Airport at 13:20 Friday, and pick up a hire car, return is Monday at 13:50. On the way to Portaferry I'll join CatsPhiddle, Micca and Leadfingers. MMario, I don't have a mini-disc recorder, but I will have my digital camera with me. |

Or we could declare Giok/John to be our taxi-driver ;-) I just checked the flight details again. And I must somehow have mixed up arrival time in Belfast with departure time. Seems to be the same flight from London to Belfast as well. My flights are London - Belfast: Friday, 30th January, Stansted 10:45, Belfast 12:05, easyjet flight no 253 Belfast - London: Monday, 2nd February, Belfast Intl 12:25, London 13:40, easyjet flight no 254 Btw, happy NEW YEAR 2004! Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 01 Jan 04 - 07:31 AM As I said at the time, the best deal last year was with Alamo (National). Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 02 Jan 04 - 07:02 PM I think Noreen might have pulled out, perhaps because the dates are uncomfortably close to the recent publicised extravaganzes of the Shellback Tour? You may add to the list my daughter Sorcha (11), who should know perhaps three or four fiddle tunes by then, and as indicated in my last post, who is disabled but will enjoy listening to the music and walking amid the pleasant scenery. What abouit Felipa/Philippa? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Skipjack K8 Date: 02 Jan 04 - 07:49 PM Sorcha knows three more tunes than the rest of us, then! Nice to have the musicians' ranks swelled. |

I hope we shall meet soon and wish you and all the attendees an excellent Portastock II. If a III is planned, I will definitely be over for that. Dear Andreas, You are quite right of course but the combined ranks of the female Clan McMoo members have me outvoted on this occasion I'm afraid! Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 03 Jan 04 - 03:57 AM Richard, why did you let the women have a vote at all? ;-) Or why did you not at least give yourself 10 votes? ;-) See you at the Euro Gathering then... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 03 Jan 04 - 03:54 PM Just noticed a couple of words missing from my last post. I hesitate to spoil the image of my daughter heroically taking life by the scruff of the neck, in the face of cruel adversity, but before "who" in the fourth line I should have put "a chum".... It is the chum, not Sorcha, who is disabled (stroke damage). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 04 Jan 04 - 04:57 AM Catsphiddle/Leadfingers/Micca: according to the Motor Hackney Carriages By-Laws, a taxi from Belfast International to Portaferry costs about 50 Pounds (roughly 45 miles, 1.1 Pounds per mile, first 1.5 miles cost 2.5 Pounds ==> 2.5 Pounds + 43.5 * 1.1 = 2.5 + 47.3 = 49.8 Pounds). Same price for the way back ==> 100 Pounds. Might it be cheaper to rent a car? (No idea of the prices) Or are you three non-drivers like me? Just an idea... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Catherine Jayne Date: 04 Jan 04 - 05:22 AM micca and I don't drive. We split the cab 3 ways last time which didn't cost that much when paid in that way. A cab is better than the bus!!!! Last year I think it cost £49 or £50. If there are 4 of sharing the taxi it will be £12.50 each! not long to go now!!! Khatt |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Leadfingers Date: 04 Jan 04 - 11:05 AM Cheapest Car hire I found was £120 for the weekend - and as the car is just going to sit outside the Hostel it seems a bit silly. The tax will be fine I think. By the way I have a mate who might well join in on Saturday just for the day - Good musician too. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 04 Jan 04 - 11:08 AM Ok, if the car hire is more expensive than the taxi the decision is made. As I said before, it was just an idea to save money because I guessed the car hire would be cheaper - it isn't, so forget the idea... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Catherine Jayne Date: 04 Jan 04 - 12:10 PM A car was a good idea Andy and if I could drive and was going to stay for longer than weekend then I would definately consider the idea.....maybe I'll be driving for Loughstock III in 2005!!! Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 04 Jan 04 - 05:43 PM That might not be a big enough motor for four plus instruments, John. But there's certainly no need to pay anything like £120. Leadfingers, have you tried Alamo/National and Dan Dooley, both of which have bases at Aldergrove? Letty, thanks. I'll send you a PM. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 04 Jan 04 - 06:00 PM Quick update from Portaferry while I'm still here (was over for the new year, heading back to Bristol tomorrow): We have 2 (TWO) cash machines now - count 'em an' weep. Both are in the Square. Dumigan's is under new management - don't know what the music situation will be because of this, but I'll check it out. There's a new session that has started up on Tuesday nights in Sand's, at the bottom of Church Street/corner of Ann Street, but I don't know if there'll be music at a weekend in there as the room is often used for other things. I'll have the family folks put out feelers and find out what's going on. I'm sorry to hear that the moos won't be coming, but I'll see yous for the Eurogathering, all being well. Peter K - I've only started on the fiddle, so all being well I'll know 3 or 4 tunes by then, so Sorcha will be in good company! See you all soon... |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Noreen Date: 04 Jan 04 - 07:16 PM John, BUDGET's advertised price doesn't include VAT or 'location charge' etc, so ends up being more expensive than other quotes. Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 06 Jan 04 - 04:36 AM Beware, MudGuard, the last time I was in Norn Iron (admittedly five or six years ago), most of the cash machines even in central Belfast displayed a few dozen UK cash-card logos, but did not accept cards from other countries. Moreover, even if you do persuade them to cough up, the poinds which they give you are issued by Norn Iron banks and would not be accepted anywhere else in the UK. So you will either have to overestimate your Sterling requirements before you travel in order to be sure you don't run dry, or else accept that any money which you succeed in withdrawing in NI will have to be spent on drink before you leave there. Tough choice, huh? Ironies of history footnote: the banks which issue these strange notes include the banks based in the Republic, even though the latter cannot issue notes on their home territory (which is part of the Euro zone). My experience of trying to withdraw money as a Southern Irish Catholic with a Belgian bank card yielded enough material for a PhD thesis (well OK, at least a short song) on the echoes of history in daily life in Northern Ireland. E.g. the charming young shop assistant in Eason's bookshop (Eason's in Dublin was still in my lifetime a very "Protestant" shop) who didn't register my Dublin accent and kept asking about whether my card (from the capital of Europe) would work "on the mainland" (i.e. in Great Britain); or the fact that one of the banks which issue this strange money is the successor to the bank established by Daniel O'Connell ("Liberator" of the Catholic peasantry in the 19th Century); or the fact that this sweet girl, who doubtless is proud to be a British subject, checked all the tills in the shop and could only come up with about twenty pounds in notes which would be accepted on what she would regard as "the mainland". But don't let my ramblings put anyone off, the half-dozen people whom I approached in shops and on the streets were all extremely helpful and made me feel really welcome in a city that I hadn't visited in the previous thirty years. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 06 Jan 04 - 04:50 AM Thanks, APC, for that reminder - I have been to that part of the UK before - and also to Scotland (which has its own bank notes as well). I did not have any troubles using the "left-over" banknotes in other parts of the UK (Scottish notes in North Ireland, North Irish in Wales...). The only money NOT excepted in England was the Isle-Of-Man-Notes this year. I had no problem using my bank card in Warrenpoint, Cushendall and Coleraine in Summer 1999 - and I think the situation should have become better, not worse in the meantime. It would be much easier if the UK had the Euro though... 24 days... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 06 Jan 04 - 05:07 AM Ok, did not reach the hostel by phone so tried it by email. Erik, you must have done something wrong - I got an answer - I got the extra night booked. Linda also wrote this: >I have explained to some, but I am hoping to start repairs to Barholm, and >the first to get fixed will be the conservatory, or I should say knocked >down. Have to fix the gable end, so I am removing the conservatory and >rebuilding it, but sadly it will not be done before you get here. I just >hope it does not cause too much inconvenience. Sounds like the conservatory will be knocked down and not yet rebuilt by the time we are there. 24 days... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 06 Jan 04 - 05:16 AM I was having a banknote argument only yesterday. I knew I'd heard somewhere that bank of England banknotes were only legal tender in England and Wales, and other forms of paper money were representative of money (rather than actually *being* money). In fact, I probably heard this on Mudcat.... Bank of England website says: The concept of legal tender is often misunderstood. Contrary to popular opinion, legal tender is not a means of payment that must be accepted by the parties to a transaction, but rather a legally defined means of payment that should not be refused by a creditor in satisfaction of a debt. The current series of Bank of England notes are legal tender in England and Wales, although not in Scotland or Northern Ireland, where the only currency carrying legal tender status for unlimited amounts is the one pound and two pound coins. So we're all just using make-believe mickey mouse money after all. I agree about the Euro though.Oh, but a lot of places in Norn Iron take Euros now, certainly in Belfast. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 06 Jan 04 - 06:29 AM This brings back memories of the declaration on the pound note that used to say "I promise to pay the bearer one pound", or words to that effect. Is that tautology or wha'? As a postscript, on the way back I tried to use a pound coin picked up in NI which had a thistle motif on it (presumably issued for use in Scotland) in the environs of London, and it was refused, even though it had the Queen's head on the other side and coinage is at least notionally issued by the sovereign state rather than by a bank. All the more reason to spend it all on drink before it goes out of fashion. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Catherine Jayne Date: 06 Jan 04 - 06:41 AM I didn't have a problem when we retuned from Portaferry with coins last year....a tip though...if the coins are refused by the shops just use them in vending machines or ticket office machines...thats what we used to do when we came back from Guernsey!!! |

My own fault for offering to take someone to 'above Belfast' but instead of a 2 hour car journey, it took 6 hours. I missed lots of fun with the Catters but managed to get 30 minutes at the Giants Causeway though which made me feel a bit better about the whole deal. Silly wasn't I? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: JudeL Date: 09 Jan 04 - 11:32 AM I have told Raven he owes you lots of creeping crawling and liquid refreshment merely for you to consider saying hello to him. Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 27 Jan 04 - 03:55 AM Another question about Portaferry: Does Portaferry have a post office (for some stamps for postcards)? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 27 Jan 04 - 04:51 AM Yes Andy, it does. It's on The Square. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: MudGuard Date: 27 Jan 04 - 05:30 AM Thanks, Fibula! Everything in Portaferry seems to be on The Square (except for the hostel). 3 days! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: My guru always said Date: 27 Jan 04 - 07:41 AM Just checked my booking with Linda, all is well & can't wait! Have just been & had my back cracked so am feeling much better now (hooray). Not too many painkillers by the weekend - I suppose I'll have to rely on the Guinness again - oh dear.... Will have a few small surprises with me - not as much fun as the Cake workshop last year but should bring a few smiles. Gearing up to a complete system restore on this thing so may not get back on-line before the weekend - in which case I wish you all safe travel now... Hil |

Raffle ,in aid of Mudcat funds, last year Leadfingers won a guided tour of the Ards Peninsula !!! and it was good fun all round, so if you have an unwanted xmas prezzie, or a bag of Jelly babies or whatever to add to the prizes, bring it along and you will get Points, and what do points make???? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 28 Jan 04 - 04:03 AM Okay folks, I'll probably be in Fiddlers Green from lunchtime on Friday, where we met last year. (More-or-less in The Square - yet again - for anyone who's new to the place.) On Friday night a lot of the pubs will have their own stuff on so we'll have to find somewhere that avoids the regular entertainment. My suggestion is Dumigan's, on Ferry Street, but it's recently changed management and I don't know what the new policy is on sessions. But I will find out! There's always the hostel anyway - maybe we can use the conference room again like last year. According to my personal weatherforecaster (my da) there's no sneachta in Portaferry yet, but we don't get snow all that often, being by the sea an' all. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Fibula Mattock Date: 28 Jan 04 - 09:01 AM My paltry Irish skills (which don't get much more complicated than asking "would you like a cup of tea?") translate this as "it's altogether very cold in Cork"! I would believe it too. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Meet Ireland 2004: Loughstock II From: Letty Date: 28 Jan 04 - 09:57 AM It's probably colder up north though. Ba mhaith liom cupan tae, Fibula, le do thoil! *grin* Letty |
