Roger - perhaps you would be kind enough to publicise the gig at the Sun Inn, Beverley this coming Sunday night (16th November). It might appear from this thread that the landlord had cancelled all his gigs on the grounds of economics. Whilst I am sorry that the series of gigs didn't pay, I really enjoyed having the chance to chill-out at the end of a weekend in the company of some really fine music. The landlord should be thanked publicly here, for providing a great venue and I am thrilled that there appears to be a reprieve/stay of execution for the Sunday performances at the Sun. Who are the artists on the 16th? What time kick-off? What can we expect? Who is coming up? You know the sort of thing. Please tell us.

Keep music live!!

at least you acknowledge it is indeed the true path! why haven't you got a beard then? is it because it would be white?

I suspect that a folk music session that banned beards could be rather poorly attended! Banning followers of the true path might be a better move?

would just like to say that all of you who frequented the oddies over the fest w/end know that once the pool table is removd the back room is more than accomodting and sory roger but i'm afraid we shall have to agree to differ on the viability of the sun.

As I said earlier, there is no immediate panic since Steve at least six weeks and maybe months before they get anyone to take over the lease. But it does seem a good idea to be prepared if we end having to move.

Steve is leaving essentially because he is losing money - the pub is only anywhere near busy when our sessions and the Sunday night acts are on. For example, last monday he had his regular trad jazz band on and took a grand total of £71 over the bar - take off the cost of the band, the staff wages, rent , rates, electricity, gas, cost of the cleaner etc etc and bear in mind that only 40% of that £71 is his by time you deduct what he pays the pubco for the beer and also the VAT. And, of course, real ales won't keep for long so if they don't sell quickly they have to be thrown away. There is much more profit in selling lager and keg beers, which why so many pubs do that.

The Army museum closing just up the road and also a local Council office closing has killed the lunchtime trade such that Steve has stopped opening before 5pm. Only Tuesday night is busy in the week and that leaves the weekend to carry everything else.

I have only been in Beverley five years but the Sun has changed hands five times in that period. It is too far out of town to attract much passing trade and anyone struggles to make a living in there. I'm sure that Helen and Chris would confirm that.

Steve has given it a brave stab by putting on all the music to attract people in but in the end the economics don't add up.

R

Thought the blame was going to be laid at my door for a moment ,only two sessions to my credit and we are out!!!

Well said Gordon!!!!!!! Yes,it would be great to continue in the "Sun"
But we do need to be mindfull of "worst case scenario" were we could find ourselves homeless and therefore sessionless.I think because Beverley is so central for everyone we would wish to stick with that.

I am at the moment in deep meaningfull negotiations with Sir Rog de Bev.about finding us a new home. The return to "Nellies" has been mooted as a possible option - but where in the place? The main problem with the set up in "Nellies" was the lack of room. This was ok if you got in very early but a lot of good singers/musicians were excluded because they couldnt get in and they went away never to return. The ideal option would be the upstairs room but a lot of people think that will detract from the ambiance of the session. What do you lot think? Another possibillity that has been mentioned is "Hodgsons" a few good singarounds took place in there over the Fest weekend. Thanks for offer of the oddies,Chris and Helen but as Gordon says we could do with a bit more room.

Just keep the ideas and comments coming in folks - and watch this space.

Deanie's Copier Emporium and Rock n Roll Parlour, Flemingate. I like the sound of that.

I have today ordered my Swift Lifestyle 510. With a Swiss Pear kitchen.

Middle age? Think it's senile dementia myself.

Yes, this is terrible news to return to. We leave the country in your hands for a few days and you let this happen! Nevertheless I echo all that is said above - we will continue some way other.

And Mick - yes Dingle was great and it sends its regards. See you soon.

What!! I go away to Banbury Folk Fest for a few days and the world turns up side down!!!! This is not allowed!

I want a law passing that says that good landlords in good pubs are not allowed to go, EVER!! Any chance of sneaking that in as "guidance" in the Licensing act Eric?? :-)

Lets hope that the new Landlord succumbs to "Sir Rogers" charms and decides to maintain the "Status Quo". In my opinion there are very few pubs in East Yorkshire that are capable of hosting the Sunday session, especially the first Sunday one. The combination of enough room, good beer/food, an appreciative audience and the rite "ambiance" is very difficult to find. The Sun has it, Nellies used to, but I cant think of anywhere else that comes close to these two in the immediate area. All the other possibilities have major disadvantages. Just wish "oddies" was a bit bigger! Any chance of moving back in to the Sun Hellen and Chris? *grin*.

As for the Tuesday session, I think there are a few possibilities, but again, many are outside Beverley or would entail a change from Tuesdays to another night. I have a welcoming venue available on Monday and Wednesday nights in Hessle but I dont want to start another session in Hessle when the Barton and Beverley mid-week sessions are still healthy and the fledge ling Hull club is trying to get off the ground. It would need regulars from both sessions to come along on a reliable basis if a Hessle session is going to be worth doing. However, the offer is there if needed.

As for the Sunday night gigs, if they are making money for the Sun then I hope the new landlord will see it makes sense to continue with them, if they are doing otherwise then unless there is another Landlord who wants to do them primarily for his/her own enjoyment then I have real worries that they may be lost which would be sad.

It is so important to see this kind of music in a "public" venue and not just confined to clubs and festivals. Its one of the best things about the scene in that part of Beverley at the moment, that unsuspecting "joe public" can walk in off the street and be exposed to some terrific music from amateurs and professional performers alike, that just doesn't get into the mass media anymore. Its the best way to convert people to the cause of traditional/folk/blues/jazz etc. How many times have we seen the "double take" on their faces as they walk in, only to find that within minutes, they are getting "up close" and turning up week after week.
I just hope that the changes at the Sun dont result in to much loss. We should all remember that we cant take these gems for granted and when they do surface from time to time, give them our best support of they can disappear and be lost forever. So, everyone clear your diaries and get along to the remaining sessions in the Sun, be ready to support whatever follows on from the current arrangements and "KEEP MUSIC LIVE". (even flamenco!!:-)

Mambo Jambo are on this Sunday and they along with Antoine, In2Rhythm, Forty2, Copper Kettle, District Bues Band and Banoffi are amongst the other bands that have appeared at the Sun (some of them several times)in the last nineteen months.

I think I'll keep a low profile for while after all this promotion work.

Eric beat me to this message but I had planned to put up a full explanation anyway:

Steve has given up his lease of the Sun with immediate effect but will be running the pub on a "caretaker" basis until the pubco that owns it finds another punter to take on a lease. Steve's best guess is that this will be a minimum of six weeks but could be up to six months.

In the meantime the sessions on Tuesday and Sunday are still welcome until Steve does go and even then the new licensee may be as welcoming as Steve was when he took over 19 months ago. So there is no immediate rush to find a new venue - but we are open to offers.

The Sunday bookings will finish after PTH's next gig on November 9th. I have tried to contact all acts who have bookings there (and the bookings go well into 2004)butif anyone reads it here for the first time my apologies.

Since Steve took over the pub in March 2002 he has been a great support to the local folk and acoustic scene - paying for an act every Sunday night and giving beer and food to performers in the sessions as well as supporting the folk festival fringe. In total we have put on about 80 evening performances which have included:

Rod Clements, Slide, The Hot Tamales, Punch The Horse, Doghouse Skiffle Group, LMR, Kwame.D, Peculiar Blue, Two Short Planks, Cara, Cunla, Pete & Rog, St Louis Zipper, Kick n Rush and loads more.

So, good luck to Steve in the future. We will carry on at the Sun for now but please do turn up for my session on the last Sunday of October and Mick's on the first Sunday in November as they may well be the last ones to be held there and it would be nice to go out in style..

Roger

Full message is :-

At the end of Tuesday at the Sun Steve informed me that he was giving up
the pub! There is no date yet but he has cancelled the Sunday evening gigs
after Nov. 9th.

We need to have a contingency plan for what we are going to do with the
workshop on Tuesdays. It may be that the new licensee would be welcoming
or it may be that Steve would want us to go to the Queens Head, which he
is retaining. On the other hand. I'm sure that Oddfellows would like us to
go there.
