Subject: Lyr Add: JUST FOR KICKS (Mike Sarne) From: Sorcha Date: 14 Oct 03 - 12:24 PM JUST FOR KICKS (Mike Sarne) MIKE SARNE (PARLOPHONE R 4974, 1963) If there's one thing that I like It's a burn up on my bike A burn up with a bird up on my bike Now the M1 ain't much fun Till you try and do a ton A burn up on my bike, that's what I like Just for kicks, I ride all through the night My bird hangs on in fright When I do the ton for kicks When my bird decides to turn up I'm off to have a burn up A burn up with a bird up on my bike When I pass a little scooter I blast him with my hooter A burn up on my bike, that's what I like Just for kicks, I ride all through the night My bird hangs on in fright When I do the ton for kicks We meet the other ton-up boys at Fred's Cave every night We just drop in to see the birds and sometimes have a bite We spend a couple of hours just tunin' our machines With our black leather jackets and our oily greasy jeans If there's one thing that I like It's a burn up on my bike A burn up with a bird up on my bike Now the M1 ain't much fun Till you try and do a ton A burn up on my bike, that's what I like Just for kicks, I ride all through the night My bird hangs on in fright When I do the ton for kicks Just for kicks, I ride all through the night My bird hangs on in fright When I do the ton for kicks Also recorded by Black Cat (EP For Rockers Only) Note: Use of the word "ton" for 100 has been around for at least 40 years - with "the ton-up boys" on their cafe racers, "doing the ton" all referring to achieving 100mph. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just For Kicks From: GUEST,OldSoak Date: 10 Apr 05 - 10:29 PM Cripes. Finally! After all these years. Been looking for the lyrics to this song forever, it seems. First heard it from a dyspeptic, ex-pat Brit headmaster at a private school in Canada. He usd to fly down Highway 2 on his motorcycle in full cap and gown (helmets weren't then mandatory), scaring the bejesus out of the locals. Next skill-testing question: Does anyone know a chord progression for this song? I can fake the versus and chorus, but I really don't remember how the bridge goes. I do recall that 'cafe' is pronounced 'kafe' but that's about it. |
Subject: Chords Add: JUST FOR KICKS (Mike Sarne) From: GUEST,Plug Date: 29 Apr 05 - 09:12 AM Ok - off the top of my head how about this, in 4-4 time: If there's (C)one thing that I like It's a (F)burn up on my bike A (C)burn up with a bird up on my (G)bike Now the (C)M1 ain't much fun Till you (F)try and do a ton A (C)burn up on my (G)bike, that's what I (C)like Just for (D)kicks, I ride all through the (G)night My (D)bird hangs on in (G)fright When I (A)do the ton for (D)kicks (D4)(D) This is just an idea and I've no guitar to try it on but I think if nothing else it'll provide something to work from. I also think there's a line missing between "ride all through the night" and "my bird hangs on". I think it was something like "and sometimes we even have a fight" but it's many years since I heard the record or met Dumpy so I forget. Hope this helps. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just for Kicks (Mike Sarne) From: GUEST,Crusty Snippets Date: 25 Oct 08 - 07:48 PM That sound right to me. The line that goes " A burn up on my bike, that's what I like " he pronounces what as wot in a cokney style. Also I recall the line " We meet the other ton-up boys at Fred's Cave " as Fred's place. Another classic from Mike Sarne is " Come outside " Crusty |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just for Kicks (Mike Sarne) From: GUEST,Cargy Date: 20 May 18 - 07:59 AM I see this lyric all over the net, and it drives me bonkers; 'Ee's a cockney, innee?! So it's not "Fred's CAVE" ev'ry night! It's "Fred's CAFE", pronounced "CAYFE" like the word "safe" but with an "c" instead of an "s". It anin't 'ard, narmean?! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just for Kicks (Mike Sarne) From: GUEST,Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 20 May 18 - 08:14 AM Not to mention I ride all froo the night I see in the other thread linked above one version avoided Fred's Cafe altogether by going to The White Swan! Mick |
