Subject: How far to see a performance? From: nosluap57 Date: 13 Oct 03 - 08:23 PM Maybe this should be a "BS" thread, but it is related to music... Q: How far would you travel to see a performance by an artist you enjoy? A: I traveled about 900 miles this last weekend to see Jed Marum at the Celtic Heritage Festival in Bedford, Texas. Great set on Saturday Jed! Too bad you didn't have time for an encore :-) Jed, ya gotta come and play Minneapolis sometime! |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Blowzabella Date: 13 Oct 03 - 08:26 PM The furthest I've travelled is from Lancaster to Wells in Somerset to see The New Scorpion Band (about five hours each way, don't know the mileage). Some people thought I was daft but, as I said, the same people would think nothing of going to London to see Kylie - and I wouldn't go to the end of our street to see her... |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 13 Oct 03 - 08:34 PM I've traveled around 1000 miles to festivals, but they have featured several performers that I like, not just one or two. The furthest I've traveled for any individual act is about 200 miles. Bruce |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Sorcha Date: 13 Oct 03 - 09:13 PM For one performer, probably about 4 hrs. For a fave festival, (4 days long) 14 hrs. |

Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 13 Oct 03 - 10:11 PM Although I've never done it, I agree with Sorcha: About four hours might be bearable, for somebody of the stature of Pete Seeger back when he had his voice and stuff, or Utah Phillips. I've driven close to 900 miles one way to Banjo Camp North mainly because Peggy Seeger and Mike Seeger were both on the faculty that year. I attended every concert and every class Peggy Seeger sang in or gave that year at BCN. Magnificent! Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 13 Oct 03 - 10:17 PM Ebbie...sorry....it ain't an ani-MULE ...but my sincerest disappoint at finding Harp is an aniquated-senior-senile with a multiple-personality-disorder. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Splott Man Date: 14 Oct 03 - 07:55 AM When Richard Thompson played Cardiff (UK) recently, I met a guy who had driven from Germany on the off chance of a ticket on the door. regards |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: maire-aine Date: 14 Oct 03 - 08:17 AM When the musical CATS first went on the road, I went to Chicago (from Detroit) to see it, but I was going to Chicago for another event also. Probably wouldn't drive more than 3-4 hours. Certainly wouldn't fly anywhere. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Santa Date: 14 Oct 03 - 08:42 AM I went to Lichfield from Lancashire for the weekend, to see Brass Monkey. Maybe 120 miles each way? That's about as far as I would be prepared to go for a single act. I've been to Sidmouth (300 mile?)for a festival but wouldn't repeat that particular trip. Is this thread (partly) going to be a repeat of the US/UK attitude to travel? |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Oct 03 - 08:48 AM A couple of years back I went 200 miles to see one of our legends being videotaped for future generations of performers in the National Library. Alex Hood was one of the Bushwhackers, the ancestors & founders of the Sydney Bush Music Club (Vice President/Editor - Bob Bolton, Secretary - Sandra in Sydney)& an important part of the folk revival here. The Club was started because too many people wanted to join the Bushwhackers & sing traditional songs. (This is a very abbreviated history). BMC turns 50 next year & is Australia's oldest folk club. sandra |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 14 Oct 03 - 10:36 AM Huddersfield to Cardiff (UK) to see Vasen - about 460 miles round trip. They were worth it. Cheers Sarah |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Steeleye Date: 14 Oct 03 - 11:17 AM Let's see. From DC to Birmingham England to see Paul McCartney. From Ft. Lauderdale to Jacksonville, FL (about an 8 hour drive) to see the Rolling Stones. A few years later from Ft. Lauderdale to New Orleans to see that same band. From Ft. Lauderdale to Dayton, OH, then Bloomington, IN, then St. Louis, MO to see Genesis three nights in a row back in the 70s when they were good. The fourth night was David Bowie in Baton Rouge, LA. And later a flight from DC to LA to see the Sex Pistols. Probably others, too. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: michaelr Date: 14 Oct 03 - 11:58 AM I'm going to drive 500+ miles (round trip) to see Capercaillie this weekend because (I still can't get over it) on their first US tour in five years, they are completely skipping the Bay Area as well as SoCal, playing instead in obscure backwaters like Chico and Arcata. I ask you! Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: KathWestra Date: 14 Oct 03 - 03:35 PM Some friends and I flew from D.C. to Rhode Island to hear Coope, Boyes & Simpson sing in Pawtucket, then rented a car to drive to New Bedford to hear them sing again the next night. That's the farthest I've gone for an individual "act," and would happily do so again for C,B & S. Have gone even farther for festivals with lots of performers I want to hear. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Phil Cooper Date: 14 Oct 03 - 03:39 PM Margaret and I drove about 300 miles from Chicago to St. Louis to see Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick. Well worth the trip. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 14 Oct 03 - 03:40 PM Isn't there a story of J.S.Bach having walked some ridiculous distance in order to hear a famous organist? |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: greg stephens Date: 14 Oct 03 - 03:44 PM It's not just the distance, it's the effort. Now, St Kilda is the remotest island in the British Isles, 70 odd sea miles further out than the outer Hebrides, which are themselves not Hhandy to get to. Anyway, with the Boat Band, we went out to St Kilda on a small boat, to play. There is a bar on the island, for a few temorarily resident military personnel and conservancy visitors..there are no permanent inhabitants. We announced using the boat radio and word of mouth over the previous couple ofdays what we were doing. And over 100 people made it to the gig in small boats(there are no ferries or planes to St Kilda). Now that was amazing. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 14 Oct 03 - 04:38 PM I suspect that a lot of these are combined with nights away from home. If I was heading for my own bed at midnight then 90 mins max drive (and a lot of strong coffee). For a single event with a bed afterwards around 4 hours drive. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: open mike Date: 14 Oct 03 - 06:11 PM come on--are there no dead heads out there who have gone on tour and lived in the parking lots for extended time??!! there are thousands of us who regularly make the twice-annual trek to yosemnite nat'l park area for Strawberry music fest. for me it involves 10 hours travel time, but many invest twice that or more in order to participate. I have travelled great distances and made great detours due to closed/flooded roads in order to go to Greg Brown concerts. several times. A friend and i flew nearly 4,000 miles to attend the Nordic Roots Scandinavian music festival last year in Minnesota. And I went form california to sweden last summer to go to a nyckelharpa festival, among other things. and Våsen will be about 4-5 hours (one way) away from me this weekend....I am considering going...if all works out right. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Blowzabella Date: 14 Oct 03 - 06:46 PM Greg - did you write your name on the ceiling in the PuffInn? I did (on a different night) |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,satchel Date: 14 Oct 03 - 11:23 PM As I read down this incredibly BS (fun, though) thread, I kept saying to myself "Are there no Deadheads on Mudcat?" Then, as if by magic, "Open Mike" took the works right out of my mouth. I once travelled over 1200 miles for two solitary shows (no touring), and then turned around and drove STRAIGHT home to RI from Birmingham AL (actually I didn't but the nut I was driving with did). Those were the days! |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: NicoleC Date: 14 Oct 03 - 11:42 PM I flew from Sacramento to Austin to see a relatively unknown band (the Uninvited) for their 2nd-to-last performance, then flew back very hungover the next morning (ironically, I was surprised to flind the bass player on the same flight as my first leg, and he lived in AZ). Then I drove my usual 90 miles each way to the Bay Area to see them do their farewell performance a few days later. It was worth it. After 12 years of seeing their shows, it was about time I worked hard to get to a gig! |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Amos Date: 15 Oct 03 - 12:45 AM I drove 1400 miles to get to a gathering once. My knees were screaming in pain by the time I got there but it was, overall, well worth it. A |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Hrothgar Date: 15 Oct 03 - 03:25 AM Drove 3000 miles to a National Folk Festival in Fremantle in 1978. Just by coincidence, it was 3000 miles back, too. Smarter these days. Canberra is only 800 miles every Easter. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 15 Oct 03 - 04:56 AM The Celtic Colours Festival is now in full swing on Cape Breton Island. There are people comming here from all parts of the world. There are over 40 concerts in 33 venues all over the island over a 9 day period. Things go day and night so there is little time for sleep. I do not have far to go since I live here but I meet people from as far away as Australia. Sandy |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: greg stephens Date: 15 Oct 03 - 08:04 AM Blowzabella: whether or not I wrote my name on the ceiling I couldnt say, though if I did I doubt if I spelt it right. My recollections of the latter part of the evening are a bit hazy..we were celebrating the fact of having got there. It's a helluva place, St Kilda, isnt it? |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Vox Box Date: 15 Oct 03 - 08:19 AM It has to be a short taxi ride away, else I'm not getting out of bed. I went to Crapredy once on the Friday because someone gave me a free ticket and assurances that Fairport would definitely not be on. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Mark Cohen Date: 18 Oct 03 - 02:55 AM Last summer I traveled 5,000 miles to hear Gordon Bok perform in Newbury, Massachusetts. Aloha, Mark (OK, my daughter and I were visiting my sister in Boston that week, but still...) |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Oct 03 - 06:22 AM The Celtic Colours festival is the furthest I have ever travelled for, drove from Boston to Cape Breton Island. Well worth it, too, although next time I would take the ferry. Murray |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Midchuck Date: 18 Oct 03 - 07:50 AM Pittsford, Vermont, USA, to Castleford, Yorkshire, UK, to see Tom Russell at the Mirage Hotel (I swear I am not making this up). But my children paid - it was their 60th birthday present to me. Peter. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 18 Oct 03 - 01:32 PM Back in the 70s I drove straight from work - near Liverpool - with some friends to see The Steve Miller Band at The Rainbow in London. I was shattered before we started. The weather on the way down was foul and the driving snow started to prevent the windscreen wipers working properly. It was an horrendous drive. The show started late( 11pm?) Anyway, after all that, I fell asleep during the show and missed most of it! |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: The Borchester Echo Date: 18 Oct 03 - 06:57 PM In about 1967 I hitchhiked from my summer job in Cornwall in under five hours to see Martin Carthy back in London. I can't remember how, or when, I got back to Penzance though. |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Oct 03 - 03:56 PM My wife and I plan in November to fly 12,000 miles from Maine to Sydney to attend a gathering at The Loaded Dog Folk Club, but we're also planning to have a couples of beers and do some singing with old friends. Otherwide, 180 miles round-trip in the van is about our limit. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: How far to see a performance? From: Folkiedave Date: 19 Oct 03 - 05:51 PM I would travel the world to see Susanne Seivane - so far the furthest is about 250 miles. Cash is important - and in the thread IMHO people must say............I went there because "....." was appearing..............ny kids paid for it, etc does not count. (This is to give us UK folks a chance!!) Regards, Dave www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |
