it's not an "herb" exactly but a succulent plant.   You can purchase the gel and add it to drinks. It's mostly known as an intestinal   cleanser when ingested so be careful not to have too much! Applied topically, it is used on burns and scrapes, sunburn and rash, etc.

I have never heard of it being used to soothe the throat.

Interesting idea. I've never known you could ingest it. I know it as a powerful healing agent, but to add it to drinks??? This is news to me. I'd love to hear more.

Liquorish (that is not how you spell it I know!) is good. I use somthing called nigroids which contain liquorish (again this damm spelling!) They taste vile but they work and you can get them at any chemists.
With any vocal aid I'd be wary of using it too frequently as it can end up affecting your voice.
Sucking a boiled sweet works fine if all else fails!

slippery elm is often used as an "emmollient" for the throat.
found in throat coat tea--which also contains licorice root...
there are lozenges which have slippery elm in them...made
by Thayers and Two Trees.

The best thing I have found for bringing back the voice, is a gargle with Port wine (Ruby is best). You can either drink it or spit it out afterwards, but it works wonders.

I learned about it from my late Mother who used it to make a speech when she had laryingitis.

Bob.

Didnt get around to trying it, but my local friendly pharmacist suggested gargling with liniment when I was having throat/voice trouble. [Oh yes---he IS a friendly guy!] He didn't recommend swallowing it, mind.....

Thayers Slippery Elm throat lozenges boast that they are "prized by opera singers". Mind the licorice root if you have high blood pressure.

WHY NOT JUST DRINK WATER?
Drinking lots of water is good, a healthy and a smart idea for many reasons. Before extended periods of vocalizing one should drink a lot of water. But the water passes through the esophagus into the digestive system and must get into the circulatory system before it can be delivered to specific dehydrated areas such as the throat or larynx. Very little ingested water comes into direct contact with these dehydrated surfaces. Plus the body's mucous-secreting glands often just can't produce enough replacement moisturizing materials quickly enough to keep up with the increased need.
