Subject: Lyr Req: Plus the tune to this old gospel/hymn?
From: Kudzuman
Date: 19 Oct 03 - 08:57 PM

All I've got is this:

Thank you, thank you, Lord above for smiling down on me
I'm the richest man in your creation as you can clearly see
I got a hump backed mule, a plow and a tater patch
Eggs that are gonna hatch someday
I've got the Lord above me and good wife to love me
I'm the richest man in the world.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Kudzuman

I know this song, but not as a hymn. I have it by Eddy Arnold. Let me go through my vinyl, tapes and cds and I'll get you the song title, album title, and the rest of the lyrics. I'll post them tomorrow. As for tune -- I could always play it over the phone.

I didn't get to go through my stuff before work, so I'll do it when I get home. But I thought you might like to know that it was written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, the songwriting team that wrote so many of the Everly Brothers hits, Rocky Top, and many others. Eddy Arnold took it to number 10 on the billboard country charts in 1955. So I don't think it was ever classified as a hymn or spiritual.

Here's my transcription from the file at the Record Lady's site (see above).

THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD
(Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, 1955)

CHORUS: I got a hump-backed mule, a plow, and a tater patch,
Eggs that are gonna hatch someday.
Got my Lord above and good girl to love me.
I'm the richest man in the world.

Thank you, thank you, Lord above, for smiling down on me.
I'm richer now than any man has any right to be.
Health and love and happiness have been my cup of tea.
The richest man in all creation surely envies me. CHORUS

I've got water in my well and heaven in my heart.
I have a perfect woman I can trust when we're apart,
Cash enough to see a show and eat out now and then,
A roof, a bed, a fishing pole, and folks who call me friend. CHORUS

I don't have much bank account. My cash on hand is small,
But tell me, what are riches but contentment after all?
Other folks may think I'm poor but I know it's not so,
'Cause when I count my blessings, I'm the richest man I know. CHORUS

[Recorded by Eddy Arnold on "Welcome To My World," 1971.]
