From: Roger in Baltimore
Date: 20 Oct 03 - 04:56 PM

Allan C. proposed a thread like this after the first Getaway. You don't have to add the lyric, but you can. Just let people know what you sang.

Big Rib sang "The People That I've seen" in the songwriting workshop. In the parody workshop I butchered Peter and Katrina Cady's "Mama Fried" and "Socks and a Gun". Due to CRS I butchered them both.

Blues workshop: "Kind Hearted Woman" (by Robert Johnson. PS: "a wise artist always steal from the best"), "Breakfast Blues" (uncertain authorship, I've heard two claims. I was the only person to realize I couldn't remember the second verse. I just sang the first verse twice, another honored folk singing tradition) (I do this song just to tick Marge off, she hates it. She called out loud for Rolaids when it was over), and "Love in Vain" (by Robert Johnson, inappropriately butchered. I only did it because Max asked me to. Except for forgetting most of the words and half of the chords, I did OK).

Comedy songs (Kendall's workshop): John Flynn's "Roadkill Cafe".

Saturday night concert "Death Ain't Got No Mercy" in DADGAD tuning. Learned the words and tune from John Jackson. The rest of it can be blamed on me. Actually, I did it pretty well and the audience sang along. It was my first trip in public with the song, always a telling time.

I think that's it.

Can we also post requests here? I'd love to get from Gorgeous Gary the lyrics to two songs: "When I was a boy"? Or whatever the title was, about Fortran/Threetran, etc. and the song you and your intended sang about the vegetables (call a spade a spade, etc). They were great!

Subject: ADD: When I Was a Boy
From: bbc
Date: 20 Oct 03 - 08:38 PM

Dani,

I loved it in 1999. Here it is:
^^
When I Was A Boy
Copyright 1997 by Frank Hayes, Firebird Arts & Music (BMI)

When I was a boy our Nintendo
Was carved from an old Apple tree
And we used garden hose to connect it
To our steam-powered color tv.
But it still beat that ancient Atari
'Cuz I almost went blind, don'tcha know,
Playing Breakout and Pong on a video game
Hooked up to our radio.

And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse
Barefoot, uphill both ways,
Through blizzards in summer and winter
Back in the good old days.
Back when Fortran was not even Three-tran
And the PC was only a toy
And we did our computing by gaslight
When I was a boy.

When I was a boy all our networks
Were for hauling in fish from the sea--
Our bawd rate was eight bits an hour (and she was worth it!),
And our IP address was just 3.
And you kids who complain that the World Wide Web
Is too slow oughtta cut out your bitchin',
'Cuz when I was a boy every packet
Was delivered by carrier pigeon

And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse
Barefoot, uphill both ways,
Through blizzards in summer and winter
Back in the good old days.
Back when Fortran was not even Two-tran
And the mainframe was only a toy
And we did our computing by torchlight
When I was a boy.

When I was a boy our IS shop
Built relational tables from wood,
And we wrappered our data in oilcloth
To preserve it the best that we could.
And we carried our bits in a bucket,
And our mainframe weighed 900 tons,
And we programmed in ones and in zeros
And sometimes we ran out of ones.

And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse
Barefoot, uphill both ways,
Through blizzards in summer and winter
Back in the good old days.
Back when Fortran was not even One-tran
And the abacus? Only a toy!
And we did our computing in primordial darkness
When I was a boy.

best,

bbc

Roger:

Oregon Inlet is in the Lyrics Add area somewhere around here. It's confused a lot of people, but Oregon Inlet is actually an east coast feature - on the outer banks of NC. I'm so glad you mentioned in the song writing workshop where your head was when you wrote the song you shared in the circle. I didn't feel alone for having shared the same perspective. Also enjoyed your guitar sound and original technique.

Subject: ADD:The Fiddler Died / the Harper and the Fiddler
From: GUEST,MMario
Date: 21 Oct 03 - 09:45 AM

THE FIDDLER DIED
(? name lost)

There once was a famous harper
who's harp could not be sharper
He played through all of Scot the land
for Dukes and Chiefs and such....

One day there came a fiddler
who's instrument was little-er
He played so loud, and was so proud...
He sniffed; "The harp's not much"

(spoken) - Well now - there's one thing you have to understand about traditional harpers. They all tend to have a wee bit of a temper. Needless to say..., there was a brief, but violent, off stage interlude...

(sung chorus)
the Fiddler died and it was just
For the fiddler was an annoying cuss
Hey Ho the fiddler died!

And when they found him murdered,
and guessed who might have murdered
They came to the Harper straight way through
and looked him in the eye!

He smiled and gave them whiskey
Was chipper and was frisky
He said: "when you hit someone with a fiddle it hurts...
But when you hit 'em with a harp, they die!"

Chorus:

The trial it was a swift one,
a famous and a fit one
HE stood before the judge so proud
and pretty in his pride

And when the judge heard charges
With solemnity and largess
He struck his gavel to the wood;
"Justifiable homicide!"

Chorus

From: MMario
Date: 21 Oct 03 - 10:20 AM

BRING ON THE STARLIGHT
(Jerry Spurlock)

Though we have come to an end,
And it's time to say, "So long, my friends,"
I hope you can feel that the meaning is real,
When we promise to meet once again.

Be you rich man or poor man; a fool or a sure man,
We've gathered our hands and we've made a merry stand.

People, they come and they go,
It's the nature of things, I suppose,
But one thing's for certain: the night is a curtain,
Where the moon of our memory glows.

So bring on the starlight, make everything end right,
A dream's just a memory that grows,
And the fair time was our time, a dream time to share time,
Yes, the fair time was a fine time to know.

GRAINIA
^^ (Brian Leo)

I am Grainne ni Mhaille,
beware me Tudor clan
West of Galway this Atlantic is mine.
Warn your sailors of the fiend
Called the Irish Pirate Queen,
Or they'll dine tonight on cannonballs and brine!

You might call me 'Grace O'Malley
in your graceless English tongue,
But no sassanach am I the gods be praised.
And I'll sail my caravel to the very gates of hell
With a load of British lords for Satan's blaze!"

When a fat and sassy prey
Hoves in sight across Clew Bay,
like a fisherman, I harvest from the sea.
Be it spices, gold or wine
All I take is all I find
And the sharks can feed on those who disagree!

You may claim our island grand
with your laws and your demands
and you smite us as a galley smites the foam
Have a care my Lady Bess
who are you to dispossess
Irish chieftains from their father's father's homes?

chorus

"There's no merchant passes Clare
That I haven't taught to 'share',
And there's much to teach invaders you may send.
You may claim this island green,
But in Connaught Grania's Queen!,
With five hundred years of freedom to defend!

You did naught to earn your crown
but be born to one reknown,
But the Black Oak's daughter's sword commands the sea!
With O'Lee's and with McMains,
and with Flaherty's I stand;
And I'm waiting for you. Bess
Challenge ME!!!!

chorus

as usual, any mistakes in the lyrics are mine....

in the Pub Sing, "A Drop of Good Beer" (stolen from Starboard List many years ago)

in the van heading home..(It does TOO count! I sang it for Shellbacks)...."The Wreck of the Old 97"
...late Sunday night or Monday morning.."Unfortunate Miss Bailey" with an added verse at this thread

and in "Rousing Choruses" ..."The Good Peanuts", which I will add the (BIG grin) words for later...

and I know there were 2 more...but my brain cell is tired!

Alma
Bright Morning Stars Are Rising
The Wild West Is Where I want to Be

and... I can't remember them all- it seems like there were at least two songs going on at any time, and I can't remember what I sang, and what I just sang along with.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEEL OF TIME (Jeri Corlew)
From: Jeri
Date: 21 Oct 03 - 06:51 PM

Lyrics to 'Fire Down Below' and some information here.

Oh lookie. The following has a first verse:
---------
WHEEL OF TIME
© 2002 Jeri Corlew

Chorus:
The wheel of time rolls on
We live, we love, and then we're gone
But every voice adds to the song
That is the life of man

And though we're carried onward
By the ceaseless flow of time
The echoes of our lives remain
In those we leave behind
Like the wings of one bright butterfly
That gently push the air
Which joins with other currents
And the power builds from there

And clouds move 'round the world
The rain it softly falls
And muffled footsteps echo
From ancient greying walls
And the same rain fell long years ago
And will fall when we are gone
When other footfalls echo
As the wheel of time rolls on

There's power in the motion
Of fragile painted wings
Though butterflies must pass away
As all such earthly things
And there's power in the gifts you give
Of laugher love and song
And tears that fall like gentle rain
When the wheel of time rolls on

Somewhere a lone voice rises
In the blackest black of night
As shadows race through windswept fields
Toward the dawn's first light
And the song they sing is your song
And it finds us though you've gone
With the wings of gentle butterflies
As the wheel of time rolls on

Midi of tune

Well, I did I didn't feel pressured to sing this year, so I sang only when I felt like it. I think I prefer to sing with other people, not alone. I'm not comfortable as a soloist unless it's a song I really know well and that I really want to share with people. I love to share my version of "Singin' in the Rain" - it's so wonderfully obnoxious.

Subject: Lyr Add: GET'EM FROM THE PEANUT MAN (HOT NUTS)
From: Tinker
Date: 22 Oct 03 - 10:16 AM

I did more video than song leading this year, but the few I did were probably memerobale.

Nobody Beats My Bob seemed to find a gulf between the sexes. The women were rolling on the floor, but not necessarily the guys.... Maybe we can add that to Kendall's comedy workshop discussion next time.

the parody I refered to is here

I did the "cleaner" verses from the following two versions of the song. ( I said I was stopping before they got bad...)

GET'EM FROM THE PEANUT MAN
(HOT NUTS)

Selling nuts, hot nuts,
Anybody here wanna buy my nuts
Selling nuts, Hot nuts
I've got nuts for sale

Sellin' one for five, two for ten
If you buy 'em once, you'll buy 'em again

Chorus:
Selling nuts, hot nuts
Buy 'em from the peanut man
Nuts, hot nuts,
Anybody here wanna buy my nuts
Selling nuts, Hots nuts
I've got nuts for sale

They tell me your nuts is mighty fine
But I bet your nuts ain't as hot as mine

Now they tell me your nuts is mighty small
Best to have small nuts than no nuts at all

Look what you can get cheep
Only 5 cents
Nice and brown too
Everybody's crazy bout my nuts

Now you see that man all dressed in brown
He's got the hottest nuts in town

When a hog gets hungry he starts to grunt
When a man gets hungry he starts to hunt
For nuts..

Found on: Raunchy Business:Hot Nuts and Lollipops
Get 'Em From the Peanut Man L.Johnson…Columbia Legacy: Roots N' Blues

GET 'EM FROM THE PEANUT MAN
(HOT NUTS)

Selling nuts, hot nuts,
Anybody here wanna buy my nuts
Selling nuts, Hot nuts
I've got nuts for sale

Six for a quarter, ten for a half
You can have a dozen if you crack 'em fast

Chorus:
Selling nuts, hot nuts
Buy 'em from the peanut man
Pea-nuts, hot nuts,
Anybody here wanna buy my nuts
Selling nuts, Hots nuts
I've got nuts for sale

These nuts I've got they just won't go
If you eat'em once you'll eat'em whole

Now you see that man all dressed in black
His nuts are so hard he keep'em in a sack

Yes, come on and get your nuts
Good and hot
I mean peanuts

Me and the hotdog man had a skuffle on the ground
If you want my nuts don't have to through me down

When you see me standing on the cornor so soon
Tryin to get my nuts all sold before noon

Found on: Raunchy Business:Hot Nuts and Lollipops
Get 'Em From the Peanut Man (The New Hot Nut)
L.Johnson…Columbia Legacy: Roots N' Blues

Okay so I was a degenerate this year.... ON the infamous ten o'clock beer run I did this one....

IF IT DON'T FIT (DON'T FORCE IT)
Barrel House Annie
Raunchy Business Hot Nuts and Lollipops, Track 8
Columbia/Sony Roots'n Blues

Chorus:
If it don't fit don't force it
Cause you'll make your momma mad
If it don't fit don't force it
Cause you'll only get in bad

Changed the lock cause you stayed out til four
I changed the lock you tried to break down the door

You've got a sheathe fits you like a glove
But it's not a good hit if you've gotta shove

Now it may stretch, it may not tear at all
But you'll never back that big mule up in my stall

You don't seem to understand my position
I'll never let you put my works out of commission

Joe you have to stop encouraging me to sing these...

It's also time to confess which song you found yourself singing involuntarily as you walked around and muddled through non-Getaway life on the day after.

For me it was Beulah Land from the Gospel session. Can't get it out of my head!

"Schinderhannes" (at the foreign languages workshop. I haven't got time to do a blue clicky now, but there's a thread on "Outlaw songs not in English" that has a link if you look hard enough.)

"Sospan Vach" - also at the foreign languages workshop
"Sam Hall"
"Sally Free and Easy"
"Wing Tra La" - French Canadian song
"Santiano"
"Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah" - at the Gospel workshop (only the first two verses)
"Two Sisters"

as in?,
"Far away, the sound of strife upon my ear is falling,
Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand.
Doubt and fear and things of earth in vain to me are calling.
None of these shall move me from Beulah Land.

Chorus: I'm living on the mountain underneath a cloudless sky
(Praise God!)
I'm drinking at the fountain that never shall run dry,
(oh yes) I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulah Land.

This has been a staple of the FSGW for 30 years or more, since the amazing Helen Scheneyer brought it into our midst. Such a song!

"The Two Foxes" from the singing of the Beers Family and "Make It, Mend It" from the singing of Coope Boyce and Simpson at the Friday Sing around, "It's Been A Long Time Since I've Been Home" which is, I think, A Nimrod Workman song in the Mining workshop. Otherwise I kept starting things that I hadn't sung in too long and not making it through 'em. Next year I'll practice before I get there.

I'm with Joe. I don't need to lead the singing to have a grand time; singing choruses among so many other fine singers keeps me happy. I did, however, sing the following in workshops:

Red-wing Blackbird
Long Lankin
Chesapeake Gold
Turtledove Done Drooped His Wing
Wife of Usher's Well

I can still hear Elizabeth Laprelle's voice in my head singing an awe-inspiring rendition of the West Virginia Mine Disaster. Wow.

And Charlie Baum helped me explore new singing territory (for me) by singing with me in Bulgarian, Shtome e Milo, but I haven't a clue how to spell any of it. Sure is fun to sing, though. Thank you, Charlie!

Hmmm...

High Sheriff (Dead or Alive)

The high sherriff wrote me a letter (2x)
"Come up and see me, dead or alive." (2x)

He said he would pay expenses * (2x)
Dead or alive, yes, sir! (2x)

He said he would clothe and feed me. (2x)
Dead or alive, yes, sir! (2x)

He even sent me my picture (2x)
How do I look, boys, dead or alive (2x)

I don't like your hard-rock hotel (2x)
Dead or alive, no, sir! (2x)

The high sherriff wrote me a letter (2x)
"Come up and see me, dead or alive." (2x)

It's a hard road, dead or alive! (4x)

* Technically, I didn't sing this verse. It's the one we didn't remember till the next day.

I sang

I'll Be All Smiles Tonight
Cicada Serenade (by the Pheremones--local DC area duo,
unfortunately no longer recording)
Watch and Chain--wonderful, wonderful song by Dave Webber
Give Me The Leavin's
My First Shipwreck At Sea (may be another title--learned it at
Sidmouth)
Slippers With Wings
Star of the County Down------I'll never get tired of it even if some
might---it's great as part of a waltz group
Tennessee Waltz (with parody verse-----for which I was severely
chastised by Claymore for distracting a band member---i.e. him)--I
didn't warn him first of the subversive lyrics)
Waiting in the Lobby of Your Heart
Life's Railway To Heaven
Angels Hovering Round
Be Sure It's True (countermelody)

I probably sang some others but I can't remember which. I know I intended to sing more, especially Henry Clay Work songs and Carter Family songs, ( of course what I really intended to do (and did) was to get as big a dose of Shellbacks as I possibly could------man, the only thing that can compare with them is the Middle Bar in Sidmouth.)
As a group, individually, and in smaller groups, sometimes aided and abetted by US luminaries like Barry and Mick, they are just dynamite.

The other problem I had was--my voice was shot by Saturday night (good thing Cicadas is a rap song, more or less). What am I doing wrong? Everybody else seemed to be in good shape as late as Sunday night. I sing in choral groups so I do know how to avoid blowing your voice out. I didn't even kill it by leading a sea chantey or singing Sacred Harp (remarkably similar to sea chanteys in vocal approach and demands.) I am particularly in awe of the Shellbacks who stayed up as late as I did Fri and Sat nights, sang a lot more than I did, and still were in fine voice Sunday. What is your secret?

y'know - one of the "high" points for me was to have people join in on songs - because so much of my repetoire is *NOT* chorus songs, or well known. That's partly why I learn them in the first place (because I want to have something to sing that isn't done by "everybody" and - heck - as far as chorus songs go - there are tons of much better song leaders then I to lead them...)

I figure another couple of repetitions and I'll get people belting out the chorus of "Brian the King" with me - they are starting to sing it already; and standing at the "focus" in the TV room and hearing the "Pull Boys Pull" come back at me during 'Carteghena' was incredible!

[of course what I am really waiting for is the day I hear a song I wrote being done by someone else *grin*]

But the true joys of something like the Getaway or Old Songs is, for me, being able to listen to the incredible music - vocal and/or instrumental, to JOIN with others in the choruses and singing - to hear verses I've never heard before - or new songs -

hmmmmm - this probably should have gone in the other thread - but I'm too lazy to cut and paste it at this point.

I would sure like to get a list of the rest of the songs and authors that were sung in the Music Hall Workshop.

I can remember:

Sorry Allan--this was a year of choruses and not many singarounds outside of the workshops. Guess you and Terri will have to get your tails over here for the next one--and sing it yourself!

There was so much wonderful wonderful singing that I too was drawn into glorious chorus singing for the most part. I lead a few.
A Starry Night to Ramble;
Drink to the Laddies written by Sue West (a former Getaway attendee who has moved to Maine);
Lament for Hull Trawlers;
Fair Fanny Moore;
Isabella Gunn;
Thaney;

I do wish I had recorded the wonderful song about friedship sung in the Sunday night concert with part of the refrain "you laugh at my jokes " it was beautifully performed and wonderful sentiments.

What a lovely lovey time. Thanks to all. Lorraine

Thanks for reminding me, Lorraine. That was nice. You don't often hear such heartfelt songs about friends, and how nice to honor a friend in that way!

I wanted to ask if anyone (or himself, if he be around) knows the beautiful song that Dick Levine (I think) sang to his wife at that concert. There was hardly a dry eye in the house. That was a moment of purest love that all aspire to. I'd love to learn the song.

The tv room was so nice for the concert. Granted, many more could not have been accommodated, but the intimacy and coziness was just right. Those of us who are not performers are sometimes wary of the stage, mikes, etc in the gym, though it's a pleasure to watch other folks in that setting.

Joe, that was probably Noreen Keene singing "Shule Aroon" (pardon the spelling.) She sang it with David Scheim's harp Sunday night, that was something to hear.

I am much too lazy to post all these words but as far as I can remember I sang:

Ballads I: "A Soldier Traveling From the North." Appalachian ballad learned from Sheila Kaye Adams, a version of The Soldier and the Maid. I'm told CHarlie Baum sang a different Appalachian version in Ballads II, wish I had heard it but went off to Pub Sing 'cause my son and Lorraine's son were leading it.

Gospel: "Linda's Promise," a song I wrote. A tribute and memorial for FSGW member Linda Lieberman. I would like to post the words but it won't be any time soon because I want to create a midi of the tune to go with.

"Molly Bender" in Ballads II. Another Appalachian song, learned from singing of Helen Stover of West Virginia.

Pub Sing: "Three Jolly Fishermen," a Yorkshire song, learned from Ye Mariners All. Alanww gave me another verse, too. Wonderful harmonies from the Shellback contingent, thank you.

Also sang "The Man Who Waters the Workers' Beer." Words are already in the DT I believe -- where do you think I learned them? Thanks to Fortunato, one night at the Royal Mile Pub Sing, for telling me this was originally a Wobblies song.

Jean Ritchie's "Black Waters" Sunday, late night.

Hi Ron, don't think you were alone in the "losing voice chorus". I was shocked that I could even hold a tune by Sunday night, so I figured well, I didn't completely lose it this song I'll try to kill it on the next one. I noticed that the Shellbacks did keep singing though out the whole time & they only seemed to get better. By Monday I could barely talk.

My voice is usually shot by Sunday night. I was a little hoarse on Monday, but still could have sung some more. I did NOT have a cold this year at any time during the Getaway, and what I thought was the beginning of a cold after I got home was just allergies.

I did "Won't You Help Me to Raise 'Em" too, and something else in Mick's car on one of the Beer Treks. Mostly, I did choruses. Barry, you're gonna have to learn a few songs!

My list of things I remember singing at the Getaway (though I imagine I probably sang other things informally in small groups as well):

Anderson's Coast (by John Warner, learned from Danny Spooner)--Friday evening singaround

Yedid Nefesh (words by Rabbi Eliezer Azikri [15th century]--two different settings, in Hebrew)--Songs in 3/4 time

Fountain Filled With Blood (by Joan Boyd, from the singing of Helen Schneyer)--Occupational Hazards (or was it at Problematic Change?--something at the Theatre Barn)

Federal Soldier (from the singing of Ruth Pershing, who attributes it to Maggie Hammons)--Immigrants and Emigrants

Land of Virginia (Robert Burns)--Immigrants and Emigrants

Delia's Gone (my own version, based loosely on Tim Eriksen's version)--Ballads I

Shto mi e Milo (Bulgarian song)--with Carly Gewirz at Saturday night concert

"She took him by the bridle hair" (a version of Child #299, Trooper and the Maid)--from the singing of C.C. "Lum" Pack of Mingo County, WV by way of the singing of Helena Triplett, now of Monongalia County, WV)--Ballads II

Tsangala da gogona (trad. Georgian)--Foreign languages

Pharaoh (from the singing of Mrs. Sidney Carter of Senatobia, Miss.)--Sunday evening concert

Kitty Alone ("Saw a crow flying low") (from the singing of Howie Mitchell)--Sunday evening singaround

Ax Aunt Dinah (version of Lazarus ballad [Southern U.S.] from Georgia Sea islands)--Sunday evening singaround

Yes, alphabetical order! But only because I have such a bad memory for what I or other people at folk weekends have sung that I routinely tick them off my song list (or cross them off if someone else has sung a song that I could sing). Hence I just ran down my list for the ticks ... !
Anyway, I enjoyed so many songs and was particularly taken by the enormous range of Barry Finn's songs. Brill!

Well, I realize I'm over a decade late, but I just found this and I need to correct the lyrics given here as my song "Grania." What MMario posted in 2003 is inaccurate. The second part of the first verse is:
Yet you dare to claim my land with your laws and your demands,
and you smite us like a galley smites the foam.
        Know your place, my lady Bess;
who are you to dispossess Irish chieftains
        from their fathers' fathers' home?

And in the second verse it should be "in Connaught I am queen," not "in Connaught Grania's queen."

Thank you.

My, what wonderful memories have been brought back by reading this revived thread. But also great sadness that some whom we met there have now gone to that great singaround in the sky.

No longer can we sing with the likes of Barry Finn, Mary LaMarca, Karen Kobela, Colin Kemp or Theresa Tooley. (And I guess there are more of whose passing I am not aware).

Tonight I shall raise a glass to the memory of them all, and to the precious times we had together.
