You don't have to add the lyric, but you can. Just let people know what you sang. Big Rib sang "The People That I've seen" in the songwriting workshop. In the parody workshop I butchered Peter and Katrina Cady's "Mama Fried" and "Socks and a Gun". Due to CRS I butchered them both. Blues workshop: "Kind Hearted Woman" (by Robert Johnson. PS: "a wise artist always steal from the best"), "Breakfast Blues" (uncertain authorship, I've heard two claims. I was the only person to realize I couldn't remember the second verse. I just sang the first verse twice, another honored folk singing tradition) (I do this song just to tick Marge off, she hates it. She called out loud for Rolaids when it was over), and "Love in Vain" (by Robert Johnson, inappropriately butchered. I only did it because Max asked me to. Except for forgetting most of the words and half of the chords, I did OK). Comedy songs (Kendall's workshop): John Flynn's "Roadkill Cafe". Saturday night concert "Death Ain't Got No Mercy" in DADGAD tuning. Learned the words and tune from John Jackson. The rest of it can be blamed on me. Actually, I did it pretty well and the audience sang along. It was my first trip in public with the song, always a telling time. I think that's it. Roger in Baltimore |

It's confused a lot of people, but Oregon Inlet is actually an east coast feature - on the outer banks of NC. I'm so glad you mentioned in the song writing workshop where your head was when you wrote the song you shared in the circle. I didn't feel alone for having shared the same perspective. I did, however, sing the following in workshops: Red-wing Blackbird Long Lankin Chesapeake Gold Turtledove Done Drooped His Wing Wife of Usher's Well I can still hear Elizabeth Laprelle's voice in my head singing an awe-inspiring rendition of the West Virginia Mine Disaster. Wow. And Charlie Baum helped me explore new singing territory (for me) by singing with me in Bulgarian, Shtome e Milo, but I haven't a clue how to spell any of it. Sure is fun to sing, though. I know I intended to sing more, especially Henry Clay Work songs and Carter Family songs, ( of course what I really intended to do (and did) was to get as big a dose of Shellbacks as I possibly could------man, the only thing that can compare with them is the Middle Bar in Sidmouth.) As a group, individually, and in smaller groups, sometimes aided and abetted by US luminaries like Barry and Mick, they are just dynamite. The other problem I had was--my voice was shot by Saturday night (good thing Cicadas is a rap song, more or less). What am I doing wrong? Everybody else seemed to be in good shape as late as Sunday night. I sing in choral groups so I do know how to avoid blowing your voice out. I didn't even kill it by leading a sea chantey or singing Sacred Harp (remarkably similar to sea chanteys in vocal approach and demands.) I am particularly in awe of the Shellbacks who stayed up as late as I did Fri and Sat nights, sang a lot more than I did, and still were in fine voice Sunday. What is your secret? |

That's partly why I learn them in the first place (because I want to have something to sing that isn't done by "everybody" and - heck - as far as chorus songs go - there are tons of much better song leaders then I to lead them...) I figure another couple of repetitions and I'll get people belting out the chorus of "Brian the King" with me - they are starting to sing it already; and standing at the "focus" in the TV room and hearing the "Pull Boys Pull" come back at me during 'Carteghena' was incredible! [of course what I am really waiting for is the day I hear a song I wrote being done by someone else *grin*] But the true joys of something like the Getaway or Old Songs is, for me, being able to listen to the incredible music - vocal and/or instrumental, to JOIN with others in the choruses and singing - to hear verses I've never heard before - or new songs - hmmmmm - this probably should have gone in the other thread - but I'm too lazy to cut and paste it at this point. |

A Starry Night to Ramble; Drink to the Laddies written by Sue West (a former Getaway attendee who has moved to Maine); Lament for Hull Trawlers; Fair Fanny Moore; Isabella Gunn; Thaney; I do wish I had recorded the wonderful song about friedship sung in the Sunday night concert with part of the refrain "you laugh at my jokes " it was beautifully performed and wonderful sentiments. You don't often hear such heartfelt songs about friends, and how nice to honor a friend in that way! I wanted to ask if anyone (or himself, if he be around) knows the beautiful song that Dick Levine (I think) sang to his wife at that concert. There was hardly a dry eye in the house. That was a moment of purest love that all aspire to. I'd love to learn the song. The tv room was so nice for the concert. Granted, many more could not have been accommodated, but the intimacy and coziness was just right. Those of us who are not performers are sometimes wary of the stage, mikes, etc in the gym, though it's a pleasure to watch other folks in that setting. Dani |

Appalachian ballad learned from Sheila Kaye Adams, a version of The Soldier and the Maid. I'm told CHarlie Baum sang a different Appalachian version in Ballads II, wish I had heard it but went off to Pub Sing 'cause my son and Lorraine's son were leading it. Gospel: "Linda's Promise," a song I wrote. A tribute and memorial for FSGW member Linda Lieberman. I would like to post the words but it won't be any time soon because I want to create a midi of the tune to go with. "Molly Bender" in Ballads II. Another Appalachian song, learned from singing of Helen Stover of West Virginia. Pub Sing: "Three Jolly Fishermen," a Yorkshire song, learned from Ye Mariners All. Alanww gave me another verse, too. Wonderful harmonies from the Shellback contingent, thank you. Also sang "The Man Who Waters the Workers' Beer." Words are already in the DT I believe -- where do you think I learned them?
