Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs you sang at the Getaway From: GUEST,Ron Davies Date: 23 Oct 03 - 10:31 PM I sang I'll Be All Smiles Tonight Cicada Serenade (by the Pheremones--local DC area duo, unfortunately no longer recording) Watch and Chain--wonderful, wonderful song by Dave Webber Give Me The Leavin's My First Shipwreck At Sea (may be another title--learned it at Sidmouth) Slippers With Wings Star of the County Down------I'll never get tired of it even if some might---it's great as part of a waltz group Tennessee Waltz (with parody verse-----for which I was severely chastised by Claymore for distracting a band member---i.e. him)--I didn't warn him first of the subversive lyrics) Waiting in the Lobby of Your Heart Life's Railway To Heaven Angels Hovering Round Be Sure It's True (countermelody) I probably sang some others but I can't remember which. I know I intended to sing more, especially Henry Clay Work songs and Carter Family songs, ( of course what I really intended to do (and did) was to get as big a dose of Shellbacks as I possibly could------man, the only thing that can compare with them is the Middle Bar in Sidmouth.) As a group, individually, and in smaller groups, sometimes aided and abetted by US luminaries like Barry and Mick, they are just dynamite. The other problem I had was--my voice was shot by Saturday night (good thing Cicadas is a rap song, more or less). What am I doing wrong? Everybody else seemed to be in good shape as late as Sunday night. I sing in choral groups so I do know how to avoid blowing your voice out. I didn't even kill it by leading a sea chantey or singing Sacred Harp (remarkably similar to sea chanteys in vocal approach and demands.) I am particularly in awe of the Shellbacks who stayed up as late as I did Fri and Sat nights, sang a lot more than I did, and still were in fine voice Sunday. What is your secret? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs you sang at the Getaway From: Carly Date: 22 Oct 03 - 11:07 PM I'm with Joe. I don't need to lead the singing to have a grand time; singing choruses among so many other fine singers keeps me happy. I did, however, sing the following in workshops: Red-wing Blackbird Long Lankin Chesapeake Gold Turtledove Done Drooped His Wing Wife of Usher's Well I can still hear Elizabeth Laprelle's voice in my head singing an awe-inspiring rendition of the West Virginia Mine Disaster. Wow. And Charlie Baum helped me explore new singing territory (for me) by singing with me in Bulgarian, Shtome e Milo, but I haven't a clue how to spell any of it. Sure is fun to sing, though. Thank you, Charlie! |

The following has a first verse: --------- WHEEL OF TIME © 2002 Jeri Corlew Chorus: The wheel of time rolls on We live, we love, and then we're gone But every voice adds to the song That is the life of man And though we're carried onward By the ceaseless flow of time The echoes of our lives remain In those we leave behind Like the wings of one bright butterfly That gently push the air Which joins with other currents And the power builds from there And clouds move 'round the world The rain it softly falls And muffled footsteps echo From ancient greying walls And the same rain fell long years ago And will fall when we are gone When other footfalls echo As the wheel of time rolls on There's power in the motion Of fragile painted wings Though butterflies must pass away As all such earthly things And there's power in the gifts you give Of laugher love and song And tears that fall like gentle rain When the wheel of time rolls on Somewhere a lone voice rises In the blackest black of night As shadows race through windswept fields Toward the dawn's first light And the song they sing is your song And it finds us though you've gone With the wings of gentle butterflies As the wheel of time rolls on Midi of tune |

Warn your sailors of the fiend Called the Irish Pirate Queen, Or they'll dine tonight on cannonballs and brine! You might call me 'Grace O'Malley in your graceless English tongue, But no sassanach am I the gods be praised. And I'll sail my caravel to the very gates of hell With a load of British lords for Satan's blaze!" When a fat and sassy prey Hoves in sight across Clew Bay, like a fisherman, I harvest from the sea. Be it spices, gold or wine All I take is all I find And the sharks can feed on those who disagree! Subject: Lyr Add: BRING ON THE STARLIGHT (Jerry Spurlock) From: MMario Date: 21 Oct 03 - 10:20 AM BRING ON THE STARLIGHT (Jerry Spurlock) Though we have come to an end, And it's time to say, "So long, my friends," I hope you can feel that the meaning is real, When we promise to meet once again. Be you rich man or poor man; a fool or a sure man, We've gathered our hands and we've made a merry stand. People, they come and they go, It's the nature of things, I suppose, But one thing's for certain: the night is a curtain, Where the moon of our memory glows. So bring on the starlight, make everything end right, A dream's just a memory that grows, And the fair time was our time, a dream time to share time, Yes, the fair time was a fine time to know. |

Subject: ADD:The Fiddler Died / the Harper and the Fiddler From: GUEST,MMario Date: 21 Oct 03 - 09:45 AM THE FIDDLER DIED (? name lost) There once was a famous harper who's harp could not be sharper He played through all of Scot the land for Dukes and Chiefs and such.... One day there came a fiddler who's instrument was little-er He played so loud, and was so proud... He sniffed; "The harp's not much" (spoken) - Well now - there's one thing you have to understand about traditional harpers. They all tend to have a wee bit of a temper. Needless to say..., there was a brief, but violent, off stage interlude... (sung chorus) the Fiddler died and it was just For the fiddler was an annoying cuss Hey Ho the fiddler died! And when they found him murdered, and guessed who might have murdered They came to the Harper straight way through and looked him in the eye! He smiled and gave them whiskey Was chipper and was frisky He said: "when you hit someone with a fiddle it hurts... But when you hit 'em with a harp, they die!" Chorus: The trial it was a swift one, a famous and a fit one HE stood before the judge so proud and pretty in his pride And when the judge heard charges With solemnity and largess He struck his gavel to the wood; "Justifiable homicide!" Chorus |

Subject: ADD: When I Was a Boy From: bbc Date: 20 Oct 03 - 08:38 PM Dani, I loved it in 1999. Here it is: ^^ When I Was A Boy Copyright 1997 by Frank Hayes, Firebird Arts & Music (BMI) When I was a boy our Nintendo Was carved from an old Apple tree And we used garden hose to connect it To our steam-powered color tv. But it still beat that ancient Atari 'Cuz I almost went blind, don'tcha know, Playing Breakout and Pong on a video game Hooked up to our radio. And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse Barefoot, uphill both ways, Through blizzards in summer and winter Back in the good old days. Back when Fortran was not even Three-tran And the PC was only a toy And we did our computing by gaslight When I was a boy. When I was a boy all our networks Were for hauling in fish from the sea-- Our bawd rate was eight bits an hour (and she was worth it!), And our IP address was just 3. And you kids who complain that the World Wide Web Is too slow oughtta cut out your bitchin', 'Cuz when I was a boy every packet Was delivered by carrier pigeon And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse Barefoot, uphill both ways, Through blizzards in summer and winter Back in the good old days. Back when Fortran was not even Two-tran And the mainframe was only a toy And we did our computing by torchlight When I was a boy. When I was a boy our IS shop Built relational tables from wood, And we wrappered our data in oilcloth To preserve it the best that we could. And we carried our bits in a bucket, And our mainframe weighed 900 tons, And we programmed in ones and in zeros And sometimes we ran out of ones. And we walked twenty miles to the schoolhouse Barefoot, uphill both ways, Through blizzards in summer and winter Back in the good old days. Back when Fortran was not even One-tran And the abacus? Only a toy! And we did our computing in primordial darkness When I was a boy. best, bbc |

Subject: Lyr Add: Songs you sang at the Getaway From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 20 Oct 03 - 04:56 PM Allan C. proposed a thread like this after the first Getaway. You don't have to add the lyric, but you can. Just let people know what you sang. Big Rib sang "The People That I've seen" in the songwriting workshop. In the parody workshop I butchered Peter and Katrina Cady's "Mama Fried" and "Socks and a Gun". Due to CRS I butchered them both. Blues workshop: "Kind Hearted Woman" (by Robert Johnson. PS: "a wise artist always steal from the best"), "Breakfast Blues" (uncertain authorship, I've heard two claims. I was the only person to realize I couldn't remember the second verse. I just sang the first verse twice, another honored folk singing tradition) (I do this song just to tick Marge off, she hates it. She called out loud for Rolaids when it was over), and "Love in Vain" (by Robert Johnson, inappropriately butchered. I only did it because Max asked me to. Except for forgetting most of the words and half of the chords, I did OK). Comedy songs (Kendall's workshop): John Flynn's "Roadkill Cafe". Saturday night concert "Death Ain't Got No Mercy" in DADGAD tuning. Learned the words and tune from John Jackson. The rest of it can be blamed on me. Actually, I did it pretty well and the audience sang along. It was my first trip in public with the song, always a telling time. I think that's it. Roger in Baltimore |
