Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: SINSULL Date: 29 Oct 03 - 05:57 PM Good to hear from you, Brendy. Some of us are planning trips your way next year. Let us have some details on the festivals you are organising. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Brendy Date: 29 Oct 03 - 08:34 AM I re-read that, Pat.... didn't mean it to 'sound' like it did.... Anyway... been out and about playing around the 'expanded' Europe, and busying myself with trying to organise a few festivals here and there. Which doesn't give me a hole lot of time for dropping into my most favourite cyber-café. Still alive and kickin', Thanks be to Jazus, and trying not to let the vicissitudes of life viciss too much. And since you couldn't play guitar then it was no big deal! Of course I'm glad you posted this Brendy since it explains why you eat from a trough......... Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 27 Oct 03 - 07:48 PM I found this link to the Wake Forest Center. I haven't pursued it, but it seems to use a top notch, multidisciplinary approach. I just know from personal experience how totally frustrating it is to talk to single-disciplinary (doctors) folks. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: kendall Date: 27 Oct 03 - 07:31 PM I thank you for that, but, when you have had lobster, it's hard to settle for spam. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: SINSULL Date: 27 Oct 03 - 06:01 PM Kendall's not old and I don't snore. And he did sing on Saturday. Mike and Tawmmie are my witnesses. Tawmmie reminded me of something. There are people who have never heard Kendall's "old" voice and love the new one for the same reasons. No one can put a song across as honestly and straightforward as Captain Morse. No extra trills, no flourishes. He sings it at it was written and lets it stand on its own. The first time I heard "And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda" it was sung by a some simpering, over emotional gold record wannabe. I hated his style and the soppy song he sang. Then I heard Kendall sing it and was stopped dead in my tracks at the brutal, angry, honesty of the song. Kendall instinctively knows how to let a song stand on its own, how to phrase it just right. So stop bitching like a grumpy old man and start using the talents and gifts you still have. GODDAMMIT! Now...do you want me to warm your slippers? Are your feet cold? Wear yourgloves and a waterproof jacket - it's raining. In fact, stay in and I will bring you some hot soup. Chicken or beef noodle? Do you have oyster crackers in stock or shall I stop and get some? How are you fixed for ...? Mother Mary |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Susan A-R Date: 26 Oct 03 - 05:57 PM Kendall, Just don't give up on going to the stuff where we can see you and get a dose of New England humor in a concentration about as stiff as the Jamisons above mentioned. Shit and Syph, wow!! That's why we need to keep catching up with you. Be well Ya old fart, whatever that has to mean for you at the moment. We love you Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Midchuck Date: 26 Oct 03 - 05:40 PM There's always the 12-year old Jameson's, for the throat and the depression. (I'll probably get criticized for that suggestion by American members because of Americans' puritanical attitudes toward any pleasant vice, and by British members because Jameson's is Irish...B***er the lot, as our British cousins would put it.) Hang in ther, Kendall; you still have a rematch coming in the Limerick shootout. You wouldn't want to miss that. Peter. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: kendall Date: 26 Oct 03 - 04:43 PM Jeri, you are wise beyond your years, and it's not just because you like my Whaling song. I have spent hundreds of dollars on a speech pathologist and on a top quality voice coach. (Recommended by Gordon Bok). I have another approach in mind, and I will let you know what happens. I'm deeply depressed, but not yet suicidal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Oct 03 - 01:06 PM Jeri- Once again you come through with good advice. Cordially, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: SINSULL Date: 26 Oct 03 - 11:18 AM The company of other Mudcatters helps. Last night, the Captain dragged out his guitar AND banjo and joined Alaska Mike in some music. He sang his own latest song. Very well done and from the heart. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Jeri Date: 26 Oct 03 - 09:52 AM If there's one positive step you haven't tried, try it. If you haven't yet done what a few have suggested and see a good voice coach, DO IT! What Robin said about not listening to doctors... They know the mechanics, they know about the physical aspects. They are the luthiers of your voice. A vocal coach or a speech therapist are the experts in how to play it. Your instrument is in about as good a shape as your luthiers can get it. Perhaps a teacher could show you how to get the most out of it. Mary in Kentucky said talk to Alice. Alice seems to know a lot about voice and she seems to know a lot about specialists who deal with vocal problems. Alice is responsible for maintaining "Threads on the Singing Voice". Please, try a specialist in operation of your voice before throwing in the towel. Over the past year, I've heard you sound just fine and I've heard you sound like you have a massive case of voice strain. It seems to me that a specialist might be able to help give you some contol over, and maximize, those 'just fine' periods. At the end of the day, if you find singing's no longer something you want to do with the voice you have, remember that 'voice' is just how you express yourself. It's the 'yourself' bit that's important. Your singing voice is a tool and there are other types of tools, other types of voice. Guitar, books, stories for two. And you're a damned fine songwriter - write more of 'em! |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Robin2 Date: 25 Oct 03 - 09:30 PM Ah Kendall, sometimes doesn't life suck? That being said.... get over it. and DON'T QUIT Had a stroke last year, still can't play worth a shit. But I still run the band, and I learned to beat a dram. Go to NOMAD, and teach what singers really need to learn... it's not the voice, but the feeling behind it. Teach timing, and presentation, and all the little things that make unforgettable singers. And sing! Even if you don't like how it now sounds to you, your knowledge of delivery and performance will make it something people really enjoy. And don't listen to docs, they guess at best! Robin2 |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: annamill Date: 25 Oct 03 - 01:44 PM I haven't had much to contribute here lately. Couldn't make it to the Getaway, which we sorely missed. You were one of the strongest reasons for my regret of not being able to make it. All I can give is my love to you, Mr Morse. Advice you've had plenty. I can't give any better. You have my love. (I could never sing, or play guitar) Love, Annamill |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Fortunato Date: 25 Oct 03 - 12:15 PM Remember the song lyric: "Nice legs, shame about the face"? Here's twist for you: "Nice life, shame about the voice". Look, my identity is tied up in singing as well. I'd feel the same, chum. However, there's only one attitude worth copping. As Ken Kesey said, "Sometimes you just got to turn your back on it and say fuck it." In short, my friend: 1)Accentuate the positive, negativity don't score shit 2)Get up off your hindparts and join the living 3)carpe diem, life's too fucking short as it is. with respect, Chance |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: SINSULL Date: 23 Oct 03 - 08:31 PM Don't discount the "post-festival" blues effect. Walking Eagle! Where the hell have you been? Check in at your thread. More than a few friends are waiting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Bobert Date: 23 Oct 03 - 07:55 PM Yo, Kendall. Me and the Wes Ginny slide rule been on this one and think we've come up with something. Ya know those little boxes that folks hold aginst their throats that amplify sounds. I think a smart sound guy could take one of them things and couple with the right electronics and amplification you'd be up and runnin'... Hey, it might sound a little *techno* but techno ain't all that bad. It'd be you... Jus' an idea worth at least explorin'... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Barbara Shaw Date: 23 Oct 03 - 05:05 PM Hey Kendall! I haven't been around here much lately, but here I am to annoy and scold you. You've ALWAYS had that gravelly voice since I've known you, first because of what was wrong and now because of I don't know what... scars, age, orneriness, stuff sticking in your craw. It hasn't really mattered to me, although I'm sure you'd love to have your smooth and silky voice back again. I'd love to be able to sing like I did as a teenager. You're a great entertainer and a good friend who (rumor and recordings have it) used to have a wonderful voice which is now "rippling" with experience. NOMAD will be fun this year in a new place, which should be interesting. There are a lot of good programs planned, including your contribution during "Hobo Songs" Saturday night with Sandy Paton and George Stephens, according to my schedule. I was hoping to get a chance for Frank and myself to sing you the latest version of "Hillside Home" sometime over that weekend. I think I know what your other issue is - I believe you mentioned it when we were at your house in Maine last August - and you can work around that, I'm sure. Sooooo.... hoping to see you at NOMAD and maybe even hear that dear gravelly voice again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 03 - 12:32 PM Who ever said that you must have a 'voice' inorder to sing? Luck to you Kendall Walking Eagle |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: GUEST,Kim C no cookie Date: 23 Oct 03 - 11:17 AM (ahem, Spaw, you're showin your good side again...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Oct 03 - 10:59 AM Kendall- I find myself thinking of Utah Phillips who was thinking a few years back of giving up performing after arthritis began affecting his fingers and he felt he could no longer play guitar well enough. I think it was Kate Wolf who brought him back to reality by gently reminding him that it was not his guitar playing that people were that interested in. Stay the course, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 03 - 09:18 AM Good thing you're not looking for sympathy, Kendall, 'cause you're not getting any that I can see. Support, care, love, lots of stuff, but there seems to be a shortage of sympathy and no pity at all. I won't guess at the other problem, because there are so many possibilities. But it looks to me like everyone wants you to stick around, doing what you do, because of who you are and what you have, and mostly because they like you.o I've found myself singing "Mary Ellen Carter" when things look rocky, at least in my head. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: kendall Date: 23 Oct 03 - 09:09 AM Like they say, if you are looking for sympathy, it's in the dictionary between shit and syphillis. Believe me, I am not looking for sympathy. There are others who have lost a lot more than I. Harpgirl, it is not the loss of a friend, even that I could deal with. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: GUEST,MMario Date: 23 Oct 03 - 08:24 AM Kendall - you can be more impressive with a one or two line joke then many performers I've seen who spend half an hour or more on stage. YOu are entitled to your loss, your frustrations, and your wallowing - but PLEASE don't withdraw what you have from the rest of us... |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Oct 03 - 08:16 AM Look Kendall, I don't know what your other problems are so if you need to wallow around for awhile I guess I understand. But the voice bit? Dharma, Mary, and quite a few others have covered that for you. Geeziz man, your voice NOW is probably better than mine anyway!!! The thing really is, you have a lot of other talents so use them with whatever voice you have left. Think about Art Thieme. I know Art would love to have back all the things that have been taken from him, but there is a lot of Art that he still shares and I am always glad to warm myself in what he has to offer. Health problems and age limit us all and the realization of just how much we have lost is hard to take. Your entire mental image of yourself is suddenly out of kilter. That is one helluva' an adjustment......I know that from personal experience. Doo what you have to do to make it because a part of who you were is still there and it's now your job to make the most of it in whatever way you can. Plus, I can still kick your saggy old ass I think......so get over it. If you feel like you've been eat by a bear and shit over a cliff, it's okay......Just don't let the fall kill you. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall and Johns-Hopkins From: Dave Bryant Date: 23 Oct 03 - 04:50 AM Kendall - just to elaborate on my last statement in my previous posting - although several other people have said almost the same thing. I can think of many singers with good voices, but who haven't (and probably never will have) that special imagination and skill to get that little bit extra out of a song which makes it a magical experience. I've never heard you sing, but from reading many of your postings and other ones about you, I know that you have it. I often think that Mike Heron summed it up in the Hedgehog Song: Oh you know all the words, And you sung all the notes, But you never quite learned the song You have "learned" many songs - and that will always come over. |
