Subject: Lyr Add: I'M MOVIN' ON (Hank Snow)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 22 Oct 03 - 09:35 PM

This is a good song worth posting in its own right, but the parodies will soon follow.

There's a copy of this song in the DT but it's missing a couple of verses.

Copied from the Internet and checked against the sound file at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites, Real Country Archives Page 6.

I'M MOVIN' ON
(Hank Snow)

That big eight-wheeler rollin' down the track
Means your true-lovin' daddy ain't comin' back,
'Cause I'm movin' on. I'll soon be gone.
You were flyin' too high for my little ol' sky,
So I'm movin' on.

That big loud whistle, as it blew and blew,
Said hello to the southland. We're comin' to you,
And we're movin' on. Oh, hear my song.
You had the laugh on me, so I set you free,
And I'm movin' on."

Mister fireman, won't you please listen to me,
'Cause I got a pretty mama in Tennessee.
Keep movin' me on. Keep rollin' on.
So shovel the coal, let this rattler roll,
And keep movin' me on.

Mister engineer, take that throttle in hand.
This rattler's the fastest in the southern land,
To keep movin' me on. Keep rollin' on.
You're gonna ease my mind, put me there on time,
And keep rollin' on.

I've told you, baby, from time to time,
But you just wouldn't listen or pay me no mind.
Now I'm movin' on. I'm rollin' on.
You've broken your vow, and it's all over now,
So I'm movin' on.

You've switched your engine. Now I ain't got time
For a triflin' woman on my main line,
'Cause I'm movin' on. You done your daddy wrong.
I warned you twice. Now you can settle the price,
'Cause I'm movin' on.

But someday, baby, when you've had your play,
You're gonna want your daddy, but your daddy will say:
Keep movin' on. You stayed away too long.
I'm through with you. Too bad you're blue.
Keep movin' on.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M MOVIN' ON (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 22 Oct 03 - 09:37 PM

This is one of H&J's better parodies.

Transcribed from the sound file at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites, Real Country Archives Page 6.

I'M MOVIN' ON
(As sung by Homer and Jethro)

The old hound dog was a-feelin' fine
Till he fell in the barrel of turpentine.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He passed the gate like an eighty-eight.
He's a-movin' on.

There was a smart guy from the city
And he picked up a stripèd kitty.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
We held our nose as we burned his clothes.
We're a-movin' on.

I let a man work on my car.
Then he grabbed hold of a spark-plug "war."
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He turned it loose when he felt the juice.
He's a-movin' on.

The old tomcat was a-feelin' mean
When he caught his tail in the sewin' machine.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He ripped a stitch when he hit the ditch.
He's a-movin' on.

The old man's face got white as a sheet
When he slipped and fell in his Cream of Wheat.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He flapped his ears as he shifted his gears.
He's a-movin' on.

Uncle John got awful clean
When he fell into the washin' machine.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He couldn't straddle that dog-gone paddle.
He's a-movin' on.

We travel a lot to make our showin'.
The way we sing, we have to keep goin'.
We're a-movin' on. We're a-movin' on.
We've gotta go. Here comes Hank Snow.
We're a-movin on.

Subject: Lyr Add: SANTA'S MOVIN' ON (Homer and Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 22 Oct 03 - 09:39 PM

This is the only instance I know of where H&J wrote TWO parodies of the same original. This one doesn't quite measure up to the previous one.

Transcribed from the sound file at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites, Country Christmas page.

SANTA'S MOVIN' ON
(As sung by Homer and Jethro)

Y'oughta seen the look on Pa
When he seen Santy Claus a-kissin' Ma.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
That mistletoe has gotta go.
He's a-movin' on.

Y'oughta seen old Santy quiver
When he slapped him in the face with a reindeer liver.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
Poor old Saint Nick was a-lookin' sick.
He's a-movin' on.

Santa Claus looked awful strange
When poor old Rudolph got the mange.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
His nose was red. His fur was dead.
He's a-movin' on.

Old Saint Nick let out a whine
When he set down on a porcupine.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
He stood real still when he felt the quill.
He's a-movin' on.

Santa was a sad old man
When he backed into the electric fan.
He's a-movin' on. He's a-movin' on.
That's all, my friend. This is the end.
He's a-movin' on.

There are many, many parodies of that song. I knew the Homer & Jethro one a long time before I ever heard the original. Most of the other parodies I know are really not suitable for this venue.

The most infamous parody of this song appeared in Korea during the winter of 1950-51. Cray's version is in the DT as "The Bug-Out Boogie." Anyone know other versions of it?

I heard that version from Korea back in the late fifties. I think it's the one that goes, "See the Chinese commie comin' through the grass/ playin' Burp Gun Boogie on a doggie's ass/ I'm movin' on, I'm movin' on/ I passed the gate like an 88, I'm movin' on."

Not that they did a parody, but didn't the Rolling Stones record "I'm Movin' On" ?

Musicmic: The one I heard has "Luke the Gook comin' down the pass" and "I crashed the gate like a P-38." OK, so the Lockheed Lightning was a slow-coach by 1950; it still sounds good.

Tunesmith

Yes, the Stones did cover this song way back in 1965 on an album called December's Children.

I have also heard versions by Elvis, Ray Charles, and Emmylou Harris.

To me, nothing beats the original 1950 Hank Snow version. Fabulous fiddle and steel, along with Hank's guitar break. He was quite a flat picker.

As I remember it,

When you hear the patter of little feet,
It's the whole First Cav in a full retreat,
They're movin' on,
They'll soon be gone.
They're burnin' gas, they're haulin' a**,
They're movin' on.

When the mortars started fallin' round the CP tent,
Everybody wondered where the high brass went,
[Continue as above.]

Doggie and Marine was on the line,
FDoggie says, "Marine, you're doin' just fine,
But I'm movin' on,
I'll soon be gone.
They're shootin' too fast for my little ole a**,
I'm movin' on."

There was another version I heard from an old Vioet nam Vet.
The MacNamara line is a hundred miles long/ It's completely surrounded by Viet Cong/ I'm moving on... Etc. Neil
