The spectacle of George Bush and John Howard lavishing praise on each other in Canberra to the delight of other politicians was enough to make everyone over here in Oz throw up.
Little Johnnie now has a new nickname ... Bonsai...(little Bush).
What a bloody embarrassment this man is to Australia .. next he will probably curtsy to the Queen when she is over here again.
What has the world done to deserve this pair of dingbats

While not an expert on the Roman Empire - the more I stufy about it the closer simliarities I see to the USA.

The Book of Revelations WAS a prophecy - for what would occur in the 1st C AD in Rome - but it is likely to come true again - after all there are Religio-nutters who are convinced that their God-given task is to accelerate Armeggedon.

The Battle of the Valley of Armeggedon has already taken place - several times in history - but the latest one occurred with US tanks beating the living crap out of ... who? :-)

Remember - the Religious Right is neither!

I read somewhere they tried "the frog in the pot of water" thing, heating it slowly. Not being stupid, the frog jumoed out once it got too warm. People could learn a lot from frogs.

Maybe they will. I note that, following on Brazil getting a leader who is anathema to the people who employ Bush, the same is now true next door in Bolivia.

(And by "the people who employ Bush", I don't mean the American people.)

Yo, Robin:

Yer' cautions aren't going unconsidered. Yeah, I'm not too sure if Boss Hog has thought out his money grab too well. There is a very real possibility that in his greed he has failed to factor in waht an America with 15% unemployment, unprecdented bankrupcties and one heck of a lot of "Soutern Man's" figuring out that have been screwed by Bog Hog's "Southern Stategy" and all these folks are outside *his* gates demandin' to have their stolen stuff, dignity included.... ahhh, like friggin' back!

Yeah, these greedy bastards don't even realize that they may very well gorge themselves to death in greed and consumption...

Karl Marx has not yet been proven wrong.... Time will tell...

One thing fir sure that I have learned is that controlling and stealing wealth is temporary.... Always has been and, I suspect, always will...

So my advice to Boss Hog: Enjoy driving around in yer' $600,000 buses with a car in tow and hope to Hell you die before the masses come to take back their share of the wealth that you have ripped off...

And.... *all* wealth is created by labor. A dollar never drove a nail!

You speak as if some kind of irrational, spontaneous loathing of George W. Bush is the only reason that people object to his lying to the whole country, taking us into an illegal war, ripping up the social safety net, and generally trashing the economy while he panders to his corrupt corporate friends.

You have to excuse Dougie, Don- his thinking [sic] is a bit clouded by years of irrational, spontaneous loathing of the Clintons.

Hey all... sorry for the pseudo-wicked irony... I don't believe like the post could indicate... But the thing is, I want to see some serious attempts at peace making. You know... real whole hearted, full gusto grasps at the never inevitable (but always covetable) world peace and prosperity... I want the president of the United States to inspire hope and wellbeing wherever he goes in the world... and this whole debacle is supremely disappointing to me... anger and fear just aren't up to the task of sustainable wealth and democracy... Isn't this clear by now? ttr

Well Richard Bridge,

as more people become unemployed, they won't have money to spend on luxuries like food - the clooapse of capitalism has been creeping on for quite a while.

But,

Out here in Aus, it has been revealed that Supermarket chains are noi longer using a 100% markup on food items, it now is 1000% to 3000% - that 10 to 30 times - and they are paying the farmer less each year.

Governmnets have worked out that a high unemployment figure will upset people to the point of riot, so like the frog in the pot of water, they have been gradually allowing people to work longer hours for less pay (tired people can't think and fight as well) and fudging the unemployment figures - if you "work" one hour a week, you are not "unemployed".

One thing's I'm sure about - when Bush comes to London, they won't have him addressing Parliament. The Queen will have him along to the Palace - that's how she earns her living. It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London has said he won't be welcome at City Hall, and he's putting on a reception for peace activists instead. It promises to be a lively visit.

And to the previous GUEST and to Doug R, I point out that it is possible to disagree strenuously with someone's policies without actually hating them. You speak as if some kind of irrational, spontaneous loathing of George W. Bush is the only reason that people object to his lying to the whole country, taking us into an illegal war, ripping up the social safety net, and generally trashing the economy while he panders to his corrupt corporate friends. I must say I am rather troubled by the idea that America can and will rule the world by force - and that Bush seems to think that he would be justified in doing so.

However, many people once called terrorists are now called freedom fighters, even some who I would have called terrorists.

Perhaps, one day, I will become one.

When enough members of the middle classes do so, surely it will become too difficult to rule by force, and the destruction arising from attempts to do so will, since capitalism must have markets, create the great crisis in capitalism of which Marx spoke.

Just an idea, so far.

one of my favourite cartoonists had a great cartoon last week about the leader of the opposition's instruction to his members that they must give bush a standing ovation when he speaks. Some were planning to wear armbands or turn their backs in protest of US actions like detaining Oz & other citizens in Cuba indefinitely.

Frame one showed the prez standing at a lectern saying "Hello" or some other single inane word (maybe it was "My")
Frame 2 showed lotsa pollies on their feet applauding & cheering & looking very enthusiastic.

What a wank - standing ovations are normally deserved. What an opposition - at least we have the Greens, they are what Labour used to be. Greens also invited members of detainees families to Parliament as their guests on the day of the speech.

And they were banned from our own national parliament, for 24 hours, for expressing dissent to the opinions of a visiting foreigner.
This proves we have now lost our own identity and we are now just a satellite of the USA.

Bob Brown is always right there where he's needed, whether it's standing in front of a bulldozer or doing time in a prison cell for his beliefs. He has had his car blown apart in a forest and his life threatened countless times. He is always a calm and thoughtful man and always a gentleman. We can bet, that when he became a disruptive voice against Bush there was a very compelling reason.
As a postscript to the incident - the Tibetan and Chinese guests of the Greens, who were not included in the ban that applied to Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle, were at first prevented from attending at President Hu's speech. They were finally sent to the glassed-in area usually reserved for school children, which is without intepreter facilities. Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle did not try to oppose their ban.

ER... I'm a bear of very little brain sometimes, but am I to understand that 2 people were thrown out of Parliament for expressing in free speech, their opinions of a man who is supposedly an advocate of and will start a war for the right to free speech?

And I agree with John Gray in Oz - how can you say they are Al Queda operatives? Unless, of course, you know them intimately, in which case, you yourself come under suspicion?

Just because a world leader duly (allegedly) elected says something, doesn't mean it's right or true.

Instead, the Shrub invades Iraq, for no good reason, guaranteeing that plenty of nice young Arabs will join Al Quaeda. He's getting lots of Americans killed, while making sure Muslims hate us.

Al-Queda operatives in our senate? Who said they were A-Q operatives ?
Here in Oz we try people in a court of law to prove if they have engaged in illegal activities, and then we label them. Not vice-versa as with our citizens incarcerated at Gitmo without trial.
I know our track record on illegal aliens can be open to question but we do provide them with legal representation and they can have their day in court.

G'day JennyO. While I don't think much of our government, or any of the parliament for that matter, at least some of them seem to have a conscience, though I don't think it makes the general mass of them too uneasy at night. I'm with Brown and Nettle, who dared to make free speech an isse in front of a man who claims he supported it. We all have the right to speak against a policy of sucking up to an ally who seems to have little interest in reciprocation. Are the US going to do anything about freeing up trade in exchange for using Oz as an example of willing assistance to show to the rest of the world? In a pig's ear....

The prisoner issue seems to be confused, and favouritism is creeping in. Only the people who come from countries where the lawyers are a powerful species seem to be getting any pressure applied on their behalf. Their treatment hardly seems to be what you'd call harsh, considering the conditions ordinary people have to live under in some parts of the world. Let them take their turn. Maybe then everybody will get equal treatment. Mind you, I'd support Harradine and anybody else who wants to see China's infringements against the basic human rights of Tibetans, or its' own national citizens exposed. And that goes for anybody else's for that matter, Afghan, Ozzie, Brit et al...

And I'd reckon you're right. Guest G.W. was using irony, and using it well.... It seems to work with aussies, but it doesn't seem to be a figure of speech the seppoes take to. Maybe the extremist emphasis that makes it work is too similar to the real-life crud they cop at home.

I think it's possible that you have misunderstood GUEST G W. I think he was "taking the piss". I read it as irony. Am I right G W?

As for Greens Senators, Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle - two of the very few honest politicians we have - more power to them!

Here are the latest developments:

GREENS PLAN TO DEFY PARLIAMENT BAN
24.10.2003. 08:41:34

Greens senators Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle say they are planning to defy a parliamentary ban today (fri) to try to attend the Chinese president's speech to federal parliament.

They have been banned for 24 hours after heckling UK President George W Bush during his address to the parliament on Thursday.

The Chinese president Hu Jontao will parliament this morning ahead of scheduled talks with the prime minister John Howard.

Senator Brown says he intends to be there, and he says Greens colleagues are planning visual protests against CHINA's policy on TIBET.

He says the Greens' Michael Organ will wear the flag of Tibet and a black armband "for all the prisoners that are being held in China".

Senator Brown would not say if he plans to heckle Mr Hu but says he is not ashamed of heckling Mr Bush because it drew attention to the Australians detained at Guantanamo Bay.

He says Mr Bush seems to be planning to fast track the justice process for the detainees.

The Independent Tasmanian senator Brian Harradine says he will boycott President Hu's speech because of China's poor human-rights record.

Senator Harradine says the parliament is promoting a person whose country has absolutely no democracy and where gross violations of human rights occur.

The foreign minister Alexander Downer has defended the Australian government's record of raising human-rights issues with China.

Mr Downer says Australia has frequently raised the issues of Tibet, Falun Gong and freedom of speech with the Chinese government.

Mr Hu is to meet with Federal Government ministers later on Friday.

and GUEST,G W - you do at least have the courage to partly identify yourself...

you too are a brainwashed wanker - you do not understand Australia at all to believe that Al-Queda operatives are embeded in the Austraialan Parliament - this sort of rhetoric matches exactly with what people like Hitler, Idi Amin, George Bush spout about how those who disagree with them... Do not throw ignorant insults at Australians - who have been dying as US allies in US started Wars since Korea!

The Greens in an earlier age would have been tarred with the pinko commo brush for daring to think differently!

"I figure the Australians have about 3 years to smoke out these guys and get their own house in order, or we will have to do it for them, and don't think we won't if it comes to that. This administration doesn't back off from a fight when human liberty and freedom are at stake."

You Idiot! Australian conspiracy nuts ALREADY believe that the CIA worked to have Gov Gen Kerr kick out the Labor Government that was trying have the US bases removed! - and the gung ho way that the US consul has been recently behaving in Australia is raising suspicions again...

And you don't understand why the whole world does not love the USA?

Four US presidents have visited Australia - in the first 3 cases, it was fatal to the political careers of the inviting Prime Minister.

We can but wait with pleasant anticipation for the forthcoming election... :-)

Johnny - Man of Steel - Steel doesn't get it... :-)

Certain politicians - the Greens wore pictures of the two Austrailans holidaying Cuba Courtesy of the US Military - tried to interject, and afterwards pass on petitions, but were manhandled by Government backbenchers to prevent them getting near George.

Cowardly George after avoiding any possible sighting of protesters then flew out of the country after less than 24 hours after arriving spend a portion of his time asleep - opinions differ on what proportion...

There is no Censorship in Australia - but Parliamentary Regulations prevent the broadcast on Australian TV of "unparliamnetary behaviour", so none of this would have been available to Australlian audiences if not for the presence of CNN cameras... :-)

Some Aussies believe that we do have some real American friends... :-)

My sentiment exactly, GUEST, but your message would have been so much more meaningful had you identified yourself.

I just saw Bush on TV news and his response was "I love freedom of speech". Oh? So that's why he's spent so much of my tax dollars on PR firms that frame his opponents, such as Tom Daschle, as demons.

Yo, GUEST, 4:08: How' about crawlin' out of yer GUEST barf bag long enough to explain why you feel that so many folks around here hate Bush, rather than his actions. I can think back of the *real* hate that your folks threw at a rather Republican president, Bill Clinton, for, ahhhh, gettin' a little Monika on the side...You all still don't get it, do you?...

Bobert
