Subject: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Bernard Date: 27 Oct 03 - 08:39 PM Dave Weatherall died this weekend. Dave was a fine singer, and was a member of 'Jolly Jack', an excellent Lancashire song trio who disbanded some years ago. At one time they were residents at the monthly folk club at St. Philip's hall in Radcliffe. He will be missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: rich-joy Date: 28 Oct 03 - 05:26 AM Jolly Jack's version of WHITE (Long Time Travelling) and Dave & Martin Hall's version of TWO YOUNG BRETHREN are amongst my all-time favourites. Vale, Dave. R-J |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Oct 03 - 06:55 AM Aye - A sad loss indeed. Daves workings of Kipling/Bellamy stuff was the finest I ever heard and his work with Jolly Jack is an definitely up in the higher classic status. A small bloke with a huge voice and more talent than you could wave a stick at! I would love to try and emulate his arrangements on the concertina but, alas, he will always be a better man than I am, Gungadin... Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: VIN Date: 28 Oct 03 - 07:54 AM Did'nt know Dave personally but saw him several times at the Joiners in Middleton and some years ago with 'Jolly Jack'. I'd heard he had been ill for some time and was obviously making herculean efforts to combat his illness and 'carry on'. It was great to hear him sing and play. What a brave guy. A very sad loss. Many condolences to his family. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Geoff the Duck Date: 28 Oct 03 - 09:29 AM I always enjoyed Jolly Jack when I used to see them at the Topic Folk Club in Bradford back in the late 70's and early 80's. It's sad to hear that another good performer had departed. Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Harry Basnett Date: 28 Oct 03 - 04:08 PM Very fond memories of Jolly Jack...saw Dave a few months ago at the Carters Arms when he sang 'Santa Fe Trail' which has always been a favourite of mine... This year has taken its toll! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Alio Date: 29 Oct 03 - 06:33 AM He was also in the Legplatters Ceilidh Band along with John Howarth and Mike Canavan, amongst others. I last saw Dave when he did an Evening with John Howarth fundraiser last June - a lovely night. Ali |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Dave Wynn Date: 29 Oct 03 - 07:08 PM I am in contact with Mike Canavan (a close friend of Dave's) He has promised to let me know the date and time of the funeral. I will add to this thread when I have the information Dave was a very nice man indeed. One of the few people to have influenced me in my choice of music and performance. As Dave The Gnome says "he had more talent than you could wave a stick at". Dave and Jolly Jack's Rolling Down to Old Maui was a seminal album for me and has had some hammer these last two nights. Rest easy Dave. Spot the (rather tearful) Dog |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Bernard Date: 30 Oct 03 - 11:27 AM Thanks, Spot. I've got a limited edition 7-inch 33rpm EP that was recorded at Bolton Octagon Theatre around 1970 - the very minimal labels were hand written by Bernard Wrigley, who is also on the EP with Dave Brooks. Anyway, Dave is also on this record singing 'The Coachman And His Whip'... maybe I'll find time to rip it to MP3 this weekend for people to download... I'm sure Dave would have approved... I doubt if anyone will kick off about copyright, anyway!! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: GUEST,Spot The Dog Date: 30 Oct 03 - 12:00 PM Mike canavan has called to say the funeral is at Bolton Crematorium on Friday 31st October at 1500. in the West Chapel. I'd like to hear that EP Bernard. Dave W |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Bernard Date: 30 Oct 03 - 07:53 PM Thanks, Dave, I'll try to be there. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Bernard Date: 31 Oct 03 - 12:13 PM Bernard Wrigley was at the funeral, and he still has the original master of the Octagon concert. He is going to let me have a CD with Dave's set on it, which is good news. The quality will be far better than ripping from the vinyl (which wasn't a very good pressing in the first place), and there will probably be four songs rather than just one. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Bernard Date: 17 Nov 03 - 12:53 PM Tonight's singaround at the White Lion, Swinton, is in Dave's memory. It is planned to be an annual event. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: Dave Wynn Date: 17 Nov 03 - 08:01 PM I have just returned from the tribute to Dave Weatherall at the white lion. It was full. One or two songs were tearjerking. Some were funny (as taught to the singer by Dave himself). Most were as would have been sung if Dave were still there. All were excellent quality as befits Dave's memory. When my time is up (he says slightly morosely) I could hope for no better tribute than this. Spot the Dog |
Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Weatherall From: GUEST,ooh-aah Date: 17 Nov 03 - 09:31 PM I only know Dave from his recording with Martin Hall of 'The Two Brethren' (on the 'Voices' CD)- easily enough to prove he was a fabulous singer, as this is still my favourite recording of ANY folk song. I wish I knew more about him and his music and I'm sorry to hear of his death. |
