I take a little poetic license with a few of the words, but only a few. The reference to "somethin' in my pocket" is his mojo. The reference to john the conqueror is to a root used to ward off evil spirits, etc.

Just for the record, it was written by Willie Dixon. This version was recorded by Bo Diddley. Muddy Waters' version was called "Manish Boy" and is very similar. Muddy also recorded Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" also has the same "da da da da da" sigature.

I typed before checking. "I'm a Man" was written by Elias McDaniel (Bo Diddley) and released by him in 1955. "Mannish Boy" was written by McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) and Elias McDaniel and released by Muddy Waters in 1955. "Hoochie Coochie Man" was written by Willie Dixon and recorded by Muddy Waters in 1954. If anyone cares.
