Subject: Chord Req: Dark Lochnagar - Corries
From: GUEST,Iain Higgins
Date: 31 Oct 03 - 03:48 AM

Hello,
I have tried to find the chords to this classic song on the web but have had no luck - I was wondering if anyone knows them or knows where i can get them??

The way the Corries do it would be great - but any chords are better than none! :-)

Cheers

From: GUEST,griff
Date: 31 Oct 03 - 04:10 PM

Hi,
I don't know how The Corries do it, but here's the version I play.
I hope it's of some use.

Dark Loch na Garr (Lachin Y Gair)

A-(G)way ye gay (D)landscapes, ye (Em)garden of (G)roses!
In (C)you let the (G)minions of (Am)luxury (D)rove;(D7)
Re-(G)store me the (D)rocks, where the (Em)snowflake re-(G)poses,
Though (C)still they are (G)sacred to (D)freedom and (G)love.
Yet, Cale-(Em)donia, be-(C)loved are thy (G)mountains,
round their white (Em)summits though (C)elements (D)war;(D7)
Though (G)cataracts (Em)foam `stead of (C)smooth-flowing (D)fountains,
I (G)sigh for the (Em)valley of (D)dark Loch na (G)Garr.

Ah! (G)there my young (D)footsteps in (Em)infancy (G)wander`d,
my (C)cap was the (G)bonnet, my (Am)cloak was the (D)plaid.(D7)
On (G)chieftains long(D)perished my (Em)memory (G)ponder`d,
as (C)daily I (G)strode through the (D)pine-cover`d (G)glade.
I sought not my (Em)home till the (C)day`s dying (G)glory,
gave place to the (Em)rays of the (C)bright polar (D)star,(D7)
for (G)fancy was (Em)cheer`d by trad-(C)itional (D)story,
dis-(G)clos`d by the (Em)natives of (D)dark Loch na (G)Garr.

(G)'Shades of the (D)dead! have I (Em)not heard your (G)voices,
(C)rise on the (G)night-rolling (Am)breath of the (D)gale?'(D7)
And (G)surely the (D)soul of the (Em)hero re-(G)joices,
and (C)rides on the (G)wind o`er his (D)own Highland (G)vale.
Round Loch na (Em)Garr, while the (C)stormy mist (G)gathers,
winter pre-(Em)sides in his (C)cold icy (D)car;(D7)
the (G)clouds there en-(Em)circle the (C)forms of my (D)fathers,
they (G)dwell in the (Em)tempests of (D)dark Loch na (G)Garr.

(G)Years have roll'd (D)on, Loch na (Em)Garr, since I (G)left you,
(C)Years must e-(G)lapse ere I (Am)tread you a-(D)gain:(D7)
(G)Nature of (D)verdure and (Em)flow'rs has be-(G)reft you,
Yet (C)still are you (G)dearer than (D)Albion's (G)plain.
England! thy (Em)beauties are (C)tame and do-(G)mestic
To one who has (Em)roved o'er the (C)mountains a-(D)far:(D7)
Oh (G)for the (Em)crags that are (C)wild and ma-(D)jestic!
The (G)steep frowning (Em)glories of (D)dark Loch na (G)Garr!

This thread made me curious as to which of the verses are sung by various groups. I guess no one has the stamina to sing all five.
Guest Griff goes with 1, 2, 3 and 5, while the Corries use 1, 2, 4 and 5. The lyrics site ingeb has only 1, 2 and 5.

Does anyone sing about the summit above the crater- Cac Carn Beag (Little Shit Cairn)?

Thanks guys,
griff the chords you gave me don't fit the corries version (i have the live version tho...) but thanks all the same!

Still if anyone comes across the chords for the corries version (im gonna tab it myself when i get a chance) if you could post it that would be good.

Cheers

p.s. if anyones interested, my tab of the corries version starts of something like this

capo 1st fret

A
A-way ye gay landscapes, ye garden of roses!
D             A          D       E
In you let the minions of luxury rove;
A
Re-store me the rocks, where the snowflake re-poses,
       D                            A
Though still they are sacred to freedom and love.
A
Yet, Cale-donia, be-loved are thy mountains,
A                                           E
round their white summits though elements war;
A
Though cataracts foam `stead of smooth-flowing fountains,
A
I sigh for the valley of dark Loch na Garr

A
Ah! there my young footsteps in infancy wander`d,
D             A          D            E
my cap was the bonnet, my cloak was the plaid.
A
On chieftains long perished my memory ponder`d,
D                A                D                E
as daily I strode through the pine-cover`d glade.
A
I sought not my home till the day`s dying glory,

etc.....

Anyway, I am writing this out at uni from memory (my tab is at home) so no doubt i have muddled up a few chords here and there.... but you can probably figure it out from here yourself :)
I will post the full, correct version soon.

Sorry if I seem a wet blanket, but --in spite of being a long-time fan of the Corries-- I would bury their version of Byron's "Dark Lochnagar" as deeply as possible. I always, when I hear it, imagine a yodelling cowboy just itching to get his spot in! And I use all five verses when I sing it; Christmas -Ne-erday in Auld Scotland will be the next time. The fourth verse is seldom sung for the simple reason that it marks the author as having Jacobite connections--a "no-no" in bigoted company.

I've got the book - trouble is, I can't read music. Maybe I could fax ther page to someone who can? Under 'Chords used in this song' there are four grids, five squares across and three down. The first is headed Bb and has an encircled 1 on the last line (presumably representing a string) of the first row, none in the second and a 2 and 3 on the 4th and 5th lines respectively in the third row. If that's any good to anyone I'm quite willing to describe the rest ...

Hi Susanne,

"Bb" describes a chord that you play on the guitar (it means "B flat") - so really all that is needed is the words to the songs with those chord descriptions where the appropriate place in the song is.

i.e.
A-(Bb)way ye gay landscapes, ye garden of roses!
In (Eb)you let the (Bb)minions of (Eb)luxury (F)rove;

alternatively written;

(Bb)
A-way ye gay landscapes, ye garden of roses!
(Eb)            (Bb)          (Eb)      (F)
In you let the minions of luxury rove;

in any case the chord shows where the guitarist should change chords relative to the lyrics being played.
does that help?
If the lyrics in the book have these chord symbols written with them, than a copy of that posted would i imagine be all that is required.

Jack

Sorry, I was temporarily smitten with blindness. They do give the chord positions:

Verse 1:
(Bb)Awa' ye grey landscapes, ye gardens o' roses
In (Eb)you let the (Bb)minions of luxury (F)rove
And re(Bb)store me the rock where the snowflake reposes
If (Eb)still they are sac(Bb)red to (F7)freedom and (Bb)love
(Bb)Brave Caledonia, (Eb)dear are (Bb)thy mountains
Round their white summits the elements (F)war
Though (Bb)cataracts roar 'stead of (Eb)smooth flowing (Bb)fountains
I (Bb)sigh for the valley of dark (F7)Lochna(Bb)gar

Verses 2-4:
And there (Bb)my young footsteps in infancy wandered
My (Eb)cap was the (Bb)bonnet, my (Eb)cloak was the (F)plaid
On (Bb)chieftains departed my memory lingered
As (Eb)daily I (Bb)strayed through the (F)pine covered (Bb)glade
I (Bb)sought not my home till the (Eb)day's dying (Bb)glory
Gave (Bb)place to the rays of the (Bb)bright polar (F)star
My (Bb)fancy was cheered by the (Eb)bold martial (Bb)story
As told by the sons of dark (F7)Lochna(Bb)gar

Chorus after verses 3-4:
(Bb)Brave Caledonia, (Eb)dear are (Bb)thy mountains
I sigh for the (Bb)valley of dark (F7)Lochna(Bb)gar
