It might be "Orphan Girl" written by Gillian Welch. EmmyLou Harris also recorded it. Check here http://www.roughstock.com/cowpie/songs/ to see if it's the right song.

Tim O'Brien and his sister Molly also recorded it on the CD "Away Out on the Mountain." The lyrics weren't included or else I would have typed them here for you.
