Subject: Wanna put mp3 files onto my website help
From: GUEST,jim clark london england

I know this has been discussed a billion times before at Mudcat, but is there a genuinely free software package I can download from the net that will allow me to create mp3 files from a line into my pc and from cd's.

I am a past master at uploading wav files using the bog standard sound recorder of sound recordings from my archive as you'll see from visiting my websites, but I would like to try and do the same using mp3 as everybody reckons its of superior quality soundwise.

So I am now looking for a totaly free to use software package that will enable me to create mp3 files from either my cd's or possibly an analog line into the back of my pc as I do with wav files if there is such a thing that doesnt require a nasa trained space scientists knowledge of techno-jargon.

Please can anybody help me on this one.

Regards.

Jim Clark

the quality of sound you get with an mp3 is inferior to audio but is compressed ( about a tenth of the size of a wav ) so it can be downloaded quicker and takes less space up on the site lots of encoders are available here :- http://www.mp3-encoders.com/ so have fun

Thanx Early,

Can you pinpoint one on that site that is definitely free to use and will facilitate what I've asked for.

I seem to go around in circles when looking into this subject.I downloaded something called cdex 1.30 this morning but that one seems only to be usable to produce mp3 cd's. I'm confused ha ha.

Thanx

Jim..

dbPowerAmp

Audacity

Bill,

That dbPowerAmp is excellent....I'm now having tremendous fun creating mp3 files.

I might start tagging on a few mp3's as a higher sound quality alternative to the dozens of wavs already at my acoustic musicians and poets sound archive

Listen online to classic poems set 2 music & unique recordings of acoustic music

I reccomend this excellent free mp3 conversion software to all others out there that like myself have struggled to find the wood for the trees when seeking the way of creating mp3 files. It only takes a few minutes to download on my dial up connection, and once installed its simply a case of popping a cd of your stuff into the player on your pc then locating your chosen track and adjusting the compression slider and bit rate (meter)thingy until you've got the mp3 file down to a sufficiently small size to send by email or post on a website.

Thanx a million Bill for your help I'd love to buy you a pint, but I guess alas your too far away, but I realy do appreciate your help.

I'll check out that other converter you mentioned too.

Whilst i'm on the subject of pc audio..I wonder is there a similarly genuinely no catches free audio mixing/sound studio software package available on the net suitablr for my ancient windows 98 pc ???

Thanx Again.

Jim...

hmmm... I have never done mixing. There 'might' be, but I don't personally have one. Will take a look at some places I sometimes go to.

(and I'll take a rain-check* on that pint, Jim...I might get over there one day!)

Thanx Bill and Amos,

I'll take a look and see what I can find on that front.

Bill that Audacity mp3 thingy is a bit more tricky to use thannthe first. It does allow for recording from line in,and has several fascinating special effects adjustments my only problem is how to save and suitably compress the stuff once as its recorded. I'm determined to suss out how it works, but its all a real eye opener to me to see what can be achieved on just free software with sound using a pc. I might have to bite the bullet and buy a software package eventualy....

Thanx again guys and I'll watch this thread to see if you or anyone else suggests a brilliant free sound studio available on the net.

Regards.

Jim Clark.

Jim...take a look at these pages: http://www.sover.net/~wysiwygx/MMedia.html
http://www.sover.net/~wysiwygx/MMedia2.html

..particularly Asia, MP3 Jumpgate and Pam ...note that Audacity is listed as a decent editor.

It seems full sound editing/mixer programs are just in too high a demand to be free...the really good ones are always payware.

I guess this thread is close enough to my own question.

If one does not have their own website, but would like to upload wav or mp3 files of their own music so that other mudcatters can take a listen--is there a way to do that withut subscribing to something like Naptster?

Janie....there are online 'file storage' sites that allow HUGE files...let me find a couple. (you are given a link when you upload, then you can send folks there..

http://uploadhut.com/

http://rapidshare.de/ (probably the biggest, but takes several steps to download (especially for free)....you need to give clear instructions.

If those don't work out, I know there are more..

Soundlift will let you upload 10 songs for nothing and maintain them there

Mixposure will let you upload 5 for free as long as you review other songs there - if not it will allow two

Next Question. Safe freeware to convert wav to mp3 files? I opened one site from a google search and it asked permission to place a 'spylog' cookie. I blocked it, but it now has me nervous about choosing safe freeware.

Bill--Uploadhut looks like the right site for me to use. However, I just spent about 10 minutes waiting for a wav file to finish uploading from my dial-up connection. I finally cancelled it when I realized it would probably take someone just as long to download it. If I convert the file from wav to mp3, that process would be significantly faster. Right?

It would be a lot faster! They are about 1/10th the size.

I've used/use dBpowerAmp but it may only be older free versions

MusicMatch is fine to convert but it's a bit intrusive on my machine and likes to try and open everything with itself as the default!

You could also use the great freebie Audacity which is a great tool generally

Greetings:

I used MP3.com until they changed format. Now I use SoundClick:

http://www.soundclick.com

You can pay for their premium service with all sorts of bells and whistles, but their basic service is free and is more than adequate for my needs. Currently, I have 18 MP3 files on their website. The only downside are the pop-up advertisements. But selling them is how they make most of their money.

I uninstalled MusicMatch jukebox because it was so intrusive.

Audacity recommends a faster processor than I have. (I have a 5 year old DELL with a celeron processor.) I do have enough RAM. Do I risk overloading my old clunker of a computer if I download Audacity, or will Audacity just not run as fast with a slower processor?

Janie..it won't hurt to try it, I'd imagine. For conversion, it would probably be just a little slower...for some of the other editing processes and recording, it might hang.

There are various ways to convert to MP3, but you **DO** have to have any recommended add-ons, as MP3 is still a licensed format. (..the Audacity website notes where & how...)

MP3 is a proprietary format and covered by patents. The way I understand it, the $14US is to cover the costs of licencing the technolgy. It is a small sum and worth it for a very useful tool.

I find Audacity's mp3 conversion limited as you don't seem to be able to specify the bit rate and for websites, I often want quite low bitrates to keep file sizes down.

with a little searching, I'd bet that you can find a copy of the older version of dbPowerAmp....that's exactly the sort of thing that clever people squirrel away for just such eventualities..(I probably have it myself in some obscure archive)

I'll check a couple of possible sites.

(I got 'most' of my basic info from finding out where a BUNCH of clever folks hang out, and reading a lot....it's nice that Mudcat has attracted a basic collection of 'info junkies' now)
