Wasn't there another song with a chorus line of

"Johny, lovely Johnie, Would you leave me..." ?

Dredged up from long long ago, I think it was one of those roistering ones about a soldier leaving his girl to go to High Germany or one of those other places that always appeared in folk songs, but not on maps. It must be thirty years since I heard it and that's the only line that has stuck. Now that it's come back, can anybody help with the rest?

Notation for the song Mick Bracken posted on 26 Apr is published in Robin Morton, compiler "Folksongs Sung in Ulster" Cork (Ireland): Mercier Press, 1970 (but probably has been reprinted since) under the title of "Lovely Johnny"

Please note that the Johnny, Lovely Johnny that Mick Bracken posted does not appear to be in the database - it it related to some song that IS there? Have you got a tune for us, Mick? I sure like the songs you post, even if you sometimes put me to shame for pointing to the wrong song.

JOHNNY, LOVELY JOHNNY

Johnny, lovely Johnny do you mind the day
You came by my window to steal me away?
You asked me to marry you, above all womankind
Oh, Johnny, lovely Johnny, what has altered your mind

Ah! the first place we courted 'twas very well known
'Twas my father's garden in the County Tyrone
We wrapped my white apron round us for to shield us from the wind
Oh Johnny, lovely Johnny, what has altered your mind

And the next place we sported 'twas in yonder green grove
Where the blackberry bushes around us they stood
Where the oak and the apple around us did twine
Oh Johnny, lovely Johnny, what has altered your mind

Annie, lovely Annie, sure 'twas all but a jest
For I never intended for to make you my best
For I never intended for to make you my wife
Oh, Annie, lovely Annie, all the days of my life

Well, a bunch of blue ribbons I will tie up and wear
And a bunch of forget-me-nots I will tie in my hair
And if ever he returns again I will greet him with joy
And I'll kiss the sweet lips of my own Johnny boy

Regards Mick Bracken

Harpgirl - you must indeed have the Dolores Keane version. She sings:

The high walls of Derry look dismal and grey
And so does lovely Johnny, he is now going away
He is going to bonnie Scotland some sweetheart to see
May the high powers above send him safe home to me

Oh Johnny lovely Johnny do you mind the day
When you came to my window to steal me away
You promised you'd marry me above all female kind
Oh Johnny lovely Johnny what has altered your mind

Oh Annie lovely Annie it was all but a jest
For I never intended to make you my best
I never intended to make you my wife
Oh Annie lovely Annie, all the days of my life

The first time I met you 'tis well I do own
'Twas in my father's garden in the county Tyrone
With my white apron round us to shield out the wind
Oh Johnny lovely Johnny what has altered your mind

A bunch of blue ribbons I'll tie up and wear
And a wreath of forget-me-nots I will twine round my hair
And if ever he returns again I will greet him with joy
And I will kiss the lips of my own Johnny boy

From Dolores Keane & John Faulkner, 'Broken Hearted I'll Wander' (Mulligan Music, LUN 033, 1979). Dolores' notes: ' I learnt this song from my Aunt Sarah, who in turn learnt it in the late 40s from Alice Rainy, a travelling woman from Co. Tyrone.'

I worked it out with the help of your 'groundwork'. Thanks! - Susanne

harpgirl, sorry I tore up the place looking & can't come up with it, maybe someone else will jump in, hopefully. I do recall a bit more after trying to drag it up from my memory.

Annie, lovely Annie, it was all just in jest
I never intended tomake you my best
I never intended to make you my wife
O Annie lovely Annie, all the days of my life

A bunch of blue ribbons I will (tie up & wear?)
A wreath of forget me nots (I'll tie in my hair?)
And if ever he returns again I will.........?
And I'll kiss the (sweet?) lips of my own Johnny boy

harpgirl this is as close, & it may not be all that close, as I can get at the moment. I think Dolores Keene (sp?) did this with her then husband John Faulkner, but I haven't a clue on what. Good Luck. Barry
