I'll be doing The Horses of Mayday next Sunday at the Wooden Horse Folk Club as it's a significant part of the year. My dad was singing along to this when it was played on the radio last Monday so it's quite a catchy number.

Could this be one of those songs that in years to come people will think of as "Traditional" like "Bring us a Barrel" and "Shoals of Herring"?

Ah Steve, I'm glad you asked that question. JJ was of course using the controversial Mobberley/Antrobus grading system of songs and sessions, which attempts to indicate the levels of difficulty involved. The basic grades are: Easy, Moderate, Difficult, Severe (S), Very Severe (VS), andExtreme (E), but experienced sessioneers generally only take interest in grades ranked Severe and above. Numerical subdivisions are often used to give further guidance so that a VS2 song/session is more challenging than a VS1 and so on. Extreme sessions are dangerous, and potentially fatal, and there are no recorded attempts at levels above E8.

As a (very) rough guide the British Council of Sessioneering has issued a modified version of Mobberley/Antrobus as follows:

Easy Suitable for novices, with no special equipment involved. Sessions at this level are likely to include pop songs, some Country and Western as well as the bits of songs by Bob Dylan that most people can remember.

Moderate At this level songs such as The Wild Rover and Danny Boy may be encountered, and the indiscriminate use of instruments such as bodhrans is a typical feature of such sessions. Some elementary awareness of tunes is helpful, but not obligatory.

Difficult Some knowledge of Steeleye Span, the Dubliners and/or the Clancy Brothers is usual at this level, and some technical equipment such as a CD player and a second-hand guitar is expected. Singers generally can remember the choruses of songs without using lyric sheets.

Severe Songs may be sung wholly from memory at this stage. At Very Severe level the singing of complete Child Ballads is normal, but these should not be attempted without the use of alcohol.

Extreme Singers at this level generally do so unaccompanied, or with a traditional tune played expertly, and have been to at least one Martin Carthy/Nic Jones/ concert and can talk at great length about Sidmouth and Whitby.

Harry, your CD is wonderful. The Horses of Mayday being only one of some superb songs on the disc. Not least The Fisherman's Wife which I am still trying to learn--why won't the words stay in my head!!??

Hi Harry, judgin by the reviews up yon and your very interesting web-site, your cd sounds ok - so next time i visit the Railway & Linnet, i'll gladly exchange some of HM's coinage & paper for one, if you're there (ok Mark, yours aswell). Got a few aunts & uncs buried in Moston cemetary! and an old mate still lives behind the Blue Bell. Incidentally, as your family history seems to go back a-ways in Moston, do you know 'owt about a legendary ghost that's supposed to haunt the Old Bluebell or has that come about cos the place looks as though it certainly should be haunted? I mean, it is opposite the cemetary, know wot a mean.
