Just heard on the radio that Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers has died.
Their music was so indicative of the period I grew up in (early 60's), I almost felt that a part of my childhood had died with him.   Anyone else had that feeling on hearing of someone's death?

Heard the same broadcast and had the same thoughts myself. After so many years these songs and their singers become so familiar to us their passing feel more personal.
The sex-drugs-rock'n'roll-era, and the lunacy that surrounds it, took many musicians before their time, Hendrix, Lennon, Cobain, etc but 40 years on, since the Beatles first came to prominence, many of our heros are of advanced ages.
We're of the same age-group Dave, and can expect many more of these sad moments in the not-too-distant future.

I always liked the Righteous Brothers from a very young age and, by a complete coincidence, had recently programmed "You've lost that loving feeling" as my GSM ringtone as one of my favourite songs.

Yes it does seem personal as C-flat says and, sadly, there are many more such experiences as the years go by.

Peace,

moo

A friend of mine and I were saying on Tuesday night that if you must have "Unchained Melody" then Bobby Hatfield is THE voice. I loved "Lovin' Feeling" when I first heard it and I think it's a shame that commercial radio has made it a MOR standard. "Little Latin Lupe Lu" by the Righteous Brothers also features great "blue eyed soul" vocals. RIP Bobby.

I heard the other one is going to release a tribute single called, "You've Lost That Livin' Feeling"..............

Okay, I'm sorry. I liked them too.

I too grew up with the music of the Righteous Brothers & as Unchained Melody is 'our song' (long story behind the reason), the only one to sing it was them. I shudder when I hear it by anyone else.

Sad news. Regarding "Unchained Melody" it is worth noting that Jimmy Young had a hit with it in 1955 and I vaguely remember watching the movie "Unchained" (also 1955) starring Chester Morris and Barbara Hale. The song had its roots in that film.

Bummer, another great singer gone. I loved the Rightious Brothers growing up and still have their lps stuck away in a box somewhere. Now I have a reason to dig them out and relive part of my youth. Goodbye Bobby, you will be missed.
