Was at Jim Morays concert at the ICA London on Monday having been dragged along by a friend. While Jim was very good, I couldn't take my eyes off the incredible double bass player. Does anyone know who he was and what other bands he plays in?

He can't have been more than 25 and wore headphones throughout the whole set. I think he was introduced as Brian something. You expect to see playing like that when you go to see Danny Thompson, but this guy really had me impressed. I would really recommend any mudcatters going to see this tour just for him.

Yeah, that bass player really really good, and so was the drummer. The movies shown throughout the set were incredibly well-thought out - and thought-provoking. Dr Faustus were their usual impeccable selves.   Jim was OK too, though not mediocre enough yet to win any awards.

Guest: try posting your query at the message board on Jim's website.

Subject: Jim Moray Leicester 14 March
From: GUEST,JeremyRS
Date: 05 Mar 12 - 04:14 AM

Jim Moray, supported by Kate Denny, will be playing at the Musician in Leicester on Wednesday 14 March.

Jim needs little introduction. From his debut, BBC Folk Award-winning album in 2003, Sweet England, through Jim Moray (2006), Low Culture (2008: fRoots Critics Poll Best Album Award-winner and Mojo Folk Album of the Year) and In Modern History (2010) Jim has produced a body of work second to none. Now with his fifth studio album Skulk available on bandcamp now (http://jimmoray.bandcamp.com/) ahead of a full release in April he has cemented his place as one of the most important and innovative voices of the contemporary folk scene.

Here's a video of him doing something a little different...

Kate Denny made her name with The Kittiwakes, whose album Lofoten Calling was praised by fRoots ("impressive and uniquely compelling", R2 magazine ("inventive and thoroughly magical") and the BBC ("bright and highly original"). Now a solo artist, she will be releasing her debut album Closer To Home later this year and will be playing songs from it and The Kittiwakes back catalogue.

Here are The Kittiwakes doing "Lofoten Calling"

Tickets are £10 from The Musician or wegottickets

Subject: Jim Moray in Bristol, July 20th
From: GUEST,NIAG
Date: 09 Jul 12 - 04:13 PM

Following his exceptionally well-received recent album Skulk, Jim Moray presents the debut of his new band The Skulk Ensemble at the Fleece in Bristol on July the 20th.

Featuring sister Jackie Oates, long time collaborators Nick Cooke (Mawkin) and Dave Burbidge, and new cohorts Joe Allen and Nick Malcolm, the band will be playing only three gigs this year - and this is the only one outside a festival! Playing a mix of old and new songs, acoustic and electric, this is (literally) a one-off.

Doors 7:30
Jim on stage 9:15

Here are some things that people said about Skulk -

"While Low Culture was quite a landmark in his career with its warm marriage of tradition and adventure, it will now have to fight Skulk to be regarded as his best" - fRoots

"Let's never again speak of Jim Moray as a folk wunderkind. That implies promise not yet fully realised (…) Skulk is his fifth album and with it he emerges as a mature artist" - Songlines

"Those who feel that the folk idiom has nothing to express to the truly modern and young should acquire this album forthwith (…) a genuinely fabulous record" - The Independent On Sunday

"Impeccably sung and flawlessly executed by one of folk's true originals" - Uncut
