Subject: Sail, baby, sail
From: Sally McQ
Date: 31 Jan 97 - 01:00 PM

A lullaby my mother used to sing began,

Sail, baby, Sail, Out across the sea, Only don't forget to sail, back again to me.

Baby's fishing for a dream, fishing far and wide, His line is just a silvery beam, his bait a silvery star.

There's more. Does anyone know it?

I have been trying for years to remember the words to this song for years. And with your help, some are coming back. Thank you.

Baby's boat's a silver moon
Sailing o'er the sky
He sails across a sea of dreams (?)
As the stars float by

Sail baby, sail
Out across the sea
Only don't forget to sail
Back again to me

Baby's fishing for a dream
Fishing near and far
His line a silver moonbeam is,
His bait a silver star

Check out replies to I Don't Want to Play in Your Yard because someone gave a version of Sail baby there.

Unfortunately the query in "I Don't Want to Play..." was from me...before I ralized a new thread would get better results. Thanks for your reply. I will take your words and combine them with mine and maybe the whole thing will come back!

Baby's boat's a silver moon
Sailing o'er the sky
Sailing o'er a sea of sleep
As the stars go by.

Sail, baby, sail
Out across the sea
Only don't forget to sail
Back again to me.
Baby's fishing for a dream
Fishing near and far
His line a silver moonbeam is
His bait a silver star

If you find that dream so fair
Happy may it be
This will always be my prayer
May God watch over thee.

Sail, baby, sail
Out across the sea
Only don't forget to sail
Back again to me.

A slightly different version, in Pankake & Pankake's _Prairie Home Companion Folk Song Book_:

Baby's boat the silver moon
Sailing in the sky
Sailing o'er the sea of sleep
While the clouds float by.

    Sail, baby, sail
    Out upon the sea
    Only don't forget to sail
    Back again to me.

Baby's fishing for a dream
Fishing near and far
Her line a silver moonbeam is
Her bait a silver star.

    Sail, baby, sail...

Words by Alice C. D. Riley, 1899, they say.

Another verse - my grandad's. He was born in the 1880's. This is an old lullaby

baby's gone a fishing
fishing for a whale
his line a silver moonbeam is
the milky way his sail

From: Jim Dixon

The sheet music can be seen at the Indiana University IN Harmony web site. Out of all the lyrics submitted so far, none is exactly right.

THE SLUMBER BOAT
Words, Alice C. D. Riley. Music, Jessie L. Gaynor.
Chicago: Clayton F. Summy Co., copyright 1898

1. Baby's boat the silver moon,
Sailing in the sky,
Sailing o'er the sea of sleep,
While the clouds float by.

CHORUS: Sail, baby, sail,
Out upon that sea,
Only don't forget to sail,
Back again to me.

2. Baby's fishing for a dream,
Fishing near and far,
His line a silver moonbeam is,
His bait a silver star.

On a similar theme, there is Kate Power's beautiful Columbia River Lullaby..you can preview it on Rhapsody I think..and Roger Holdstock's West Coast Lullaby..on CD Baby for preview. mg
