One of the first pieces of folk music writing I ever did was a review of DG's first album No More Forever in the Morning Star.

Digressing slightly: I saw the Oyster Band in Glasgow a while back at Celtic Connections. The Strathclyde Suite (of the Royal Concert Hall) in which they were playing was sponsored by The Sunday Times and they had one of their big banners draped from the stage. Before the first number, lead singer Johnny Jones announced bemusedly "what the fuck's this - the Oyster Band sponsored by Rupert Murdoch - we didn't expect that in Glasgow". Sign o' the Times Johnny!

With the kind of news media we have in this country, owned and controlled by a handful of people, mostly Murdoch (thank gawd for the daily Morning Star), we need people like Dick on the folk/contempory circuit (and people like Michael Moore, John Polger etc)_to strike at least some kind of balance in the general dissemination of information and opinion. So long may he 'rant'!!

Last time I saw Dick, in Glasgow about 3 years ago, virtually each song was preceded by a long political rant (mostly anti-Thatcher), which I found a bit wearing. (Not that I'm pro-Thatcher). Has he mellowed any in this respect in recent years? One of the greatest folksingers though no matter what.

I've enjoyed him whenever I've seen him. I last saw him was on 9 Sep 01, and talked with him a bit about politics on a break. I said something like "I just hope Bush doesn't get us into a war." Oops. I don't believe he's been back in the US since that tour, and I doubt we'll see him over here until there's a regime change. I miss being able to go to one of his concerts, though. I was going to pick up 'Outlaws and Dreamers' the next time I saw him, and there hasn't been a next time.

Although 'ramblings' is the word Dick himself uses, what he has to say is far from rambling in the accepted sense of the word.

Whenever I'm called upon to cite examples of a well-designed, informative and wholly accessible website, this one invariably heads my list.

This is aside from even beginning to take into account his astounding musicality and riveting stage presence - an all-round top bloke with an unparalled line in superb invective where it's most needed.

And he'll be at one of my favourite venues, the Old Rose & Crown in Walthamstow on 4 December.

Saw Dick Gaughan at the Pacific Road, Birkenhead last night - fantastic!....Just one guy with a powerful voice, powerful guitar and great songs, playin with no amplification, just a mike for himself and the guitar...refreshingly like the old days....two encores!! Well deserved....Brilliant!!...go and see. Ta Dick!!!!
