Well, I caught a taxi in the old Smoky Mountains,
Had to get to the airport before 10 o'clock,

Well, the taxicab pulled up, and the driver stepped out.

While she sang high harmony with Charlie Monroe,
And the air smelled like hickory mixed in with the menthol,
And both sides of the highway were covered with snow.

But my husband hauls diesel, so were not on relief,"
And I pictured him somewhere in some lonely truck stop.
He's hitting on the waitress with a good set of teeth.

Well I reached for my wallet as we pulled in the airport.

And as she pulled away, there was mandolins playing
With the smoke from the menthols and the tailpipe's exhaust.

Laura Boosinger Recordings   Check out "Back To Old Smoky Mountains" ~~ first cut on the second album listed, Down The Road. There is a generous 1 minute 40 second RA clip.

These albums are all worth having, whether that is the song you are looking for or not. Laura has stopped by here a couple of times, by the way.

There's a nice tabledit version of the song.
Sure hope Laura gets to Chicago sometime. I recommended her for the U of C folk fest - she'd be great!!

"Back to Old Smok[e]y Mountain" [spelling is inconsistent between various sources] was written by Gene Autry and Hugh Cross, and recorded by Gene Autry in 1932. It appears on the Sony LP "Back in the Saddle Again," P-14380, 1968, which has been reissued as a CD. A sound sample can be heard at amazon.com. Here is my partial transcription:

Back to Old Smoky Mountain,
Back to that old hometown of mine.
Birds in the trees and the honeybees
Cling to the honeysuckle vine.
There's a little girl that's waiting,
Praying each night and day for me.
Back to Old Smoky Mountain,
Back to my home in Tennessee.

Riley pucketts version is only the chorus. There's a more complete version, and although I downloaded it, I can't seem to find it now.
It's either on Rose, the Record Lady's site, or on Honking Duck.
