Subject: Lyr Add: SMOKY MOUNTAIN TAXI (Adam Carroll) From: Sorcha Date: 11 Nov 03 - 10:28 PM This one? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMOKY MOUNTAIN TAXI The chords in this are basically C G D G, all the way through. Listen to the recording for rhythm, timing, etc. Well, I caught a taxi in the old Smoky Mountains, Had to get to the airport before 10 o'clock, Had to check out of my funky hotel room, And the nearest bus station was a ten-mile walk. Well, the taxicab pulled up, and the driver stepped out. She wore a pink shirt and black slacks and some cheap perfume. There were holes in her smile, and she talked kinda raspy. She was shaped like the sister of Earthquake McGoon. Well, the sunrise was hazy, and my suitcase was heavy, And she lit up a smoke while my shoulder blades sagged. She said "I'll take you as far as the hickory airport But I ain't gettin' paid to carry your bags." Took a two-hour taxi through North Carolina, Heard more bluegrass music than I wanted to hear, And the big lady driver had a tattoo of Jesus. Said, "Let the Lord bless you and keep you, my dear." Said, "Let the Lord bless you and keep you, my dear." Well, the cab smelled of menthols, and the floorboards were dirty From Styrofoam cups and old cigarettes. She said, "I hope that my daughter doesn't pick up my habits, 'Cause she's just 9 years old and way too young yet." Well, I looked out the window at the old Smoky Mountains While she sang high harmony with Charlie Monroe, And the air smelled like hickory mixed in with the menthol, And both sides of the highway were covered with snow. She said, "Most of my family live in a trailer, But my husband hauls diesel, so were not on relief," And I pictured him somewhere in some lonely truck stop. He's hitting on the waitress with a good set of teeth. Repeat chorus Well I reached for my wallet as we pulled in the airport. She blew me a kiss while she counted the cost, And as she pulled away, there was mandolins playing With the smoke from the menthols and the tailpipe's exhaust. http://www.altcountrytab.com/actforum/topic.asp?Topic_ID=5193 Or this tab? Subject: RE: Lyr Req: back to my old smokey mountains From: GUEST,Dale Date: 11 Nov 03 - 11:03 PM Laura Boosinger Recordings Check out "Back To Old Smoky Mountains" ~~ first cut on the second album listed, Down The Road. There is a generous 1 minute 40 second RA clip. These albums are all worth having, whether that is the song you are looking for or not. Laura has stopped by here a couple of times, by the way. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: back to my old smokey mountains From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Nov 03 - 10:48 PM "Back to Old Smok[e]y Mountain" [spelling is inconsistent between various sources] was written by Gene Autry and Hugh Cross, and recorded by Gene Autry in 1932. It appears on the Sony LP "Back in the Saddle Again," P-14380, 1968, which has been reissued as a CD. A sound sample can be heard at amazon.com. Here is my partial transcription: Back to Old Smoky Mountain, Back to that old hometown of mine. Birds in the trees and the honeybees Cling to the honeysuckle vine. There's a little girl that's waiting, Praying each night and day for me. Back to Old Smoky Mountain, Back to my home in Tennessee. It was also recorded by Riley Puckett. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: back to my old smokey mountains From: GUEST Date: 19 Nov 03 - 01:41 PM Riley pucketts version is only the chorus. There's a more complete version, and although I downloaded it, I can't seem to find it now. It's either on Rose, the Record Lady's site, or on Honking Duck.
