Congrats Ben.. Glad to see the book is re-done... Is there a C. D. With this version?
Also for folks looking for a collection of "dots and Lines" music notation for Scandinavian fiddle tunes check out Karen Meyers site Blue Rose. Also J. C. 's tunefinder John Chambers site. There are some tunes to be found on Seattle Scandia dance web site too.. Cannot find links as my computer was destroyed in the fire. But perhaps someone can search out the URL forcthese

Scottish and Irish music played on the Swedish Nyckelharpa keyed fiddle.
Gavin Pennycook, a Glaswegian now living in Edinburgh, is, I am informed by his father, one of the few people in this country who play this instrument.

The last time I heard Ben Paley at Whitby, he said his book on Swedish fiddle music was about to be reprinted.

I can't see any trace of it.

If you want good swedish fiddle music you cant go far wrong with Ola Backstrom from SWAP, A band called HULLING from Sweden or try VASEN or JPP from finland.

Chack out the Northside Folk Festival every year in America where lots of these sort of acts play.

and they produce Nordic Roots Fest music festivals
which most bands have traditional tunes,
though they often do many variations
so that they are sometimes so metamorphosed
that the original simple folk roots are

Janette Duncan in Northern California is a good resource. She plays and teaches Swedish tunes, and might know of someone closer to you. PM me for her contact info if interested. A great fiddler to listen to is Ellika Frisell. Her CD "Tokpolska" is a gem! See if Dick Greenhaus at CAMSCO can get it for you. It's worth the import costs - a beautiful recording by a true master of the genre.

If you want a fun, not too difficult (for Swedish fiddle music) book of sheet music, I recommend "Swedish Fiddle Music, an Anthology," compiled by Ben Paley. There is a tape that goes with it so you can hear what the music is supposed to sound like. The book has a brief explanatory Introduction and brief notes with each tune. It's fun.

If there is an 'old vinyl' shop near you, when Nonesuch Records was still around, they did a couple of albums of Swedish fiddle music that not only sounded excellent but had discussions of the history in the liner notes. The only parts I remember are that there was a mutual influence between Scandinavian music and Scotts piping. There was also supposed to be a continuity (in Swedish music, at least) because of the annual 'mustering parade'. Men of military age would start at one end of the country and march to the other, picking up contingents as they went along. That way the various regional musicians got to perform for each other.

Open Mike, I live in Colorado, sadly, but all those pretty pictures of nyckelharpas made me wish I had some money I didn't particularly need. :)

Quite useful, Alba. I have the problem that half the Swedish fiddle music I can find is stuff like Väsen, lovely, but not too deathly authentic.

Hardanger fiddle is very pretty, but isn't more Norwegian? At this point I don't know any Swedish tunes or anything, so I think I should keep my focus pretty narrow until I have some idea what I'm doing. (I'm utterly clueless except I know I think it's pretty. :) )
