In a slight displacement ot Tradition, the Orange Peel Carolers (Orangeville is about 50 miles from Toronto Ontario Canada)sang several of the same carols including our first puplic kick at "Hail Smiling Morn" at the "Golden Kiwi" (owned by an ex New Zealander) in Cambridge (yeah the Ontario one) last Sunday. We had a great time, it's our third year at it now. Our audience loved it too. I guess we have a few years to go to catch up with the rest of you :)

The bus driver of the 11.00 am was closely questioned by his inspector because of the number of full fare paying passengers on Sunday.

What a great sight to see all those catters getting off the bus.

And the missus says thanks for the paper Jim.

Not just carols at The Royal but a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to Abuwood too! It was indeed a wonderful afternoon if just a tad crowded! A good session with McFat, Les and Maggie, Bassic and others afterwards in the Red House with a roaring fire.

There's a sing on Boxing Day and next Sunday and no doubt Ken and Padgett will comandeer at least one the sessions at Whitby for a Carol night.

This Sunday was incredibly crowded and I had to resort to subterfuge to get in and out of the toilet. I also had problems getting enough beer. Good job I ordered two at the start and again later on. These two problems are not unconnected.

MC Fat now has the local bus drivers trained to stop outside the pub.

There was some wonderful singing and (Sue the organist) went through the carols at record pace. We probably got an extra one in thanks to that.

A really good season I felt and I managed to make every one (though I shall be missing Dec 28th so my seat will be up for grabs.

They couldn't manage to kickstart the train from Hull, so that made us about 20 minutes late, and mucked about any connections we could have made. But we got there in time for the start. I was glad to add my voice to the basses, but it gets pretty inaudible on the really low notes.

We had a wonderful time (as usual), but I did miss the draught Guinness and Jacob's Well.

Report on Sunday.

MC Fat took my advice and managed to stop the bus outside the pub. Emma was a great guest and brought her boots for the walk. I understand that Les and others suffered from the vagaries of the transport system.

I thought the singing was paricularly good.........some great basses from somewhere?? I can never understand why people on Desert Island Discs don't take Old Foster or Diadem.

Also I would negotiate the fares, if he goes in with three times as much money as normal Mainline will think he has been going off his route!

personally i cant see the appeal of these carols - singing beer and good company - what do you lot expect of a Sunday - enjoyment?

Les the c & o attache usually does solids and alcohol after carols at Fagan's followed every other week by the Sheffield folk festival meeting and if the other Spitfire brother is around they might even demolish a chinese buffet!
Due to security reasons his itinary cannot be published but if it involves beer and singing and is in tram distance of chez wayne he will be there

Hi,

It was great to watch the hologram go sailing past the boozer on the 11.23 am bus! A well-trained driver should stop outside :-)>

Great to see all those 'catters though. For anyone not sure, I am the "pregnant lady coming through" when I am carting booze back from the bar to the corner under the window. An all too frequent occurence I am pleased to say.

For anyone wanting to inspect the book collection instead of purchasing site unseen and also saving on postage then let me know in advance and I can offer some hospitality in the form of home-made soup and quality cheese sarnies or similar. And no obligation!!

Didn't see you, Mrs.Duck -- maybe we were in different rooms. I think I'd have recognized you, becos I've been to the Cleckheaton Folk Festival many times, and I have a suspicion y'all have a *little* something to do with it! ;-)

catsPHiddle, I met Col K at the very end; think I may have seen you leaving -- are you "ambulation challenged" at the moment?

The name Jon Bartlett doesn't ring a bell (althought your face *might* be familiar -- I know a lot more faces than names!) and I haven't yet managed to figure out whether or not MC Fat is someone I actually know outside of Mudcat.

Cheers,

YY

Maggie and I should be there on the next two Sundays (one each for Worrall and Dungworth). As usual we will be up for a bit of 'afters' - a sing and play in some boozer. Perhaps South Yorkshire's cultural and obestity attache will be able to make appropriate suggestions.

Worrall was crowded and full of familiar faces too. Organ symphonies give you a chance to identify the carol before it begins and to regain your breath between verses! Nicely played as well.

I think Shelley Posen does his bit in Ottawa. We also have his book and have a local music store selling copies of it.
The Book is:-
The Canadian Pub Caroler
ISMM # m-706023-00-7
Published by OFC Publications. A Division of The Ottawa Folklore Centre Ltd.
1111 Bank Street
Ottawa Ontario
Canada
K1S 3X4
e-mail: thefolks@ottawafolklore.com
website

Probably easier for the UK readers is:

The Joy of Christmas (The Blue Book)
ISBN: 0-9543334-0-3
Pub by Worrall Male Voice Choir Reg Charity Number 515038
317a Haggerstones Road
Worrall
Sheffield
S35 0PB
United Kingdom

e-mail secretary@worrallmvc.org.uk
(last year my contact was Keith Hoyland who was excellent to deal with)
They also have a website.

The CPC has 27 songs, arranged in mostly 4 part with a couple of 3 part harmony and one round. Some are credited to the JoC. It is about 25$Can, although if you buy lots you get a deal. I think we paid about 20$Can we have friend with relatived in Ottawa so zero postage.

The JoC has 90 songs, I think they are all in 4 part. It has at least 15 versions of "While Shepherds" last years cost was 5 Pounds UK.
That is about 12.50 $Can then you add the postage. It is a pretty big book and postage will probably at least double that price.
There is some duplication book to book, although the CPC has some not in the JoC and Viccy Versy.

Good Singing to ALL, JohnB who hopes he got all the above info typed in correctly.

There are certainly some people in Canada already who sing carols " a la mode" so to speak. I think they are in Toronto. The name Shelley Posen comes to mind. I actually have the book but cannot lay my hands upon it at the moment.

thats for me to know and you to find out dave!

Well I have finally experienced the carols - reminded me of when I was a kid - in the village I was born in, and subsequently spent many hols with my gran, Sundays the whole village turned out to church ( you only missed if you were dead or dying) and then the men went to the pub while the women went home to cook - the men carried on with singing carols before returning home half cut at closing time for arguments and Sunday lunch - ah fond memories!! Mcfat next year perhaps you will take me for the famous Sunday lunch at Fagans and I can compare that too!!

As a regular of far too many years standing can I recommend that people read Barry's notes on etiquette.

I would particularly refer people to his note where he says:

Secondly, in many places there are not many seats, and these are often saved for more elderly regular singers; sensitivity here will help .

If you would kindly leave the corner seat between the window and the organ for "folkiedave" this elderly singer would very much appreciate it.

And if you are a mudcatter (there were at least two of the Shellbacks there last weekend) then make yourself known to MC FAT who stands next to the bar near to the kitchen and cannot be mistaken and/or myself. Sat in the corner as above unless someone gets there first.
