Subject: RE: Looking for a few good drinking songs... From: Bobert Date: 14 Nov 03 - 08:01 PM Oh, I can't rememeber who did this one. Think it was Conway Twitty but it was entitled (I think) "And This Time I've Hurt Her More Than She Loves Me"... Greatest of the drinking songs.... Then there's was Roger Williams (?) "Chug-a-lug" Or Tom T. Hall's epic, "I Like to Drink Beer"...[I LIKE BEER] No, John Lee Hooker's "One Bouboun, One Scotch and One Beer" ...er' David Allen Coe's "I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison... ("Greatest Country and Estern Song" by Steve goodman...) Nope, it was Hearts Field's "The Only Time I'm Sober is When Your Gone"... Nah, George Thorgood's "If Ya' Don't Start Drinkin', I'm Gonna Leave" Hey, I'd drink to any of 'em.... Bobert |
Subject: Lyr Add: I GOTTA GET DRUNK (Willie Nelson) From: PapaWhiskey Date: 14 Nov 03 - 08:54 PM Willie Nelson et al. "I've Got To Get Drunk" I've got to get drunk but I sure do dread it, 'Cause I know just what I'm going to do, Start to spend my money, calling everybody honey, And wind up singing the blues. Spend my whole paycheck on some old wreck, And, buddy, I can name you a few. I've got to get drunk but I sure do dread it, 'Cause I know just what I'm going to do. I've got to get drunk I can't stay sober, There's a lot of good people in town, Who want to hear me holler, see me spend my dollars, And I wouldn't think of letting them down. There's a lot of doctors who tell me, I'd better start slowing it down, But there's more old drunks than there are old doctors, So I guess we'd better have another round. |

Subject: ADD: SIMON THE CELLARER From: Nigel Parsons Date: 15 Nov 03 - 10:09 AM Simon the cellarer; but it doesn't appear to be in the DT, nor online elsewhere: So.. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SIMON THE CELLARER W.H.Bellamy Old Simon the Cellarer keeps a large store Of Malmsey and Malvoisie, And Cyprus, and who can say how many more! For a chary old soul is he: For a chary old soul is he: Of Sack and Canary he never doth fail, And all the year round there is brewing of ale; Yet he never aileth, he quaintly doth say, While he keeps to his sober six flagons a day. But ho! ho! ho! His nose doth show How oft the black-jack to his lips doth go Dame Margery sits in her own still room, And a matron sage is she; From thence oft at curfew is wafted a fume – She says it is Rosemarie! She says it is Rosemarie! But there's a small cupboard behind the back stair, And the maid say they often see Margery there;- Now Margery says that she grows very old, And must take a something to keep out the cold. But ho! ho! ho! Old Simon doth know Where many a flask of his best doth go! Old Simon reclines in his high-back'd chair, And talks about taking a wife; And Margery often is heard to declare She ought to be settled in life: She ought to be settled in life: But Margery has (so the maids say) a tongue And she's not very handsome, and not very young; So somehow it ends with the shake of a head, And Simon he brews him a tankard instead. While ho! ho! ho! he will chuckle and crow, "What! Marry old Margery? Oh! No! no!" NP Copied from "The Oxford Song Book" Percy C Buck, 1916 Also available Broadside @ the Bodleian The broadside has a few small differences from the version shown above, including; V1 line 1 "Rare store", not "large store" V3 L2 "Talks of taking" not "talks about taking" V3 L3 "Oft has been heard" not "Often is heard" V3 L8 "brews her a tankard" not "brews him a tankard" |

Subject: RE: Looking for a few good drinking songs... From: Joe_F Date: 20 Nov 03 - 06:23 PM Kipling's "CELLS" -- but I guess that's more of a hangover song: I've a head like a concertina, I've a tongue like a buttonstick, I've a mouth like an old potato, and I'm more than a little sick, But I've had my fun o' the Corp'ral's Guard; I've made the cinders fly. And I'm here in the Clink for a thundering drink and blacking the Corporal's eye. He also wrote a vivid poem -- probably meant to be a song, tho I've never heard it sung -- called "The Shut-Eye Sentry": The moon was white on the barricks, The road was white an' wide, An' the Orderly Orf'cer took it all, An' the ten-foot ditch beside. An' the corporal pulled an' the seargeant pushed, An' the three they danced along, But I'd shut my eyes in the sentry-box, So I didn't see nothin' wrong. Though it was "Rounds! What rounds?" O corporal, 'old 'im up! 'E's usin' is cap as it shouldn't be used, but, sentry, shut your eye.... I especially like There was two-an'-thirty sergeants, There was corp'rals forty-one, There was just nine 'undred rank an' file To swear to a touch of sun. There was me 'e'd kissed in the sentry-box, As I 'ave not told in my song, But I took my oath, which were Bible-truth, I 'adn't seen nothin' wrong. Don't ask, don't tell. |

Subject: RE: Looking for a few good drinking songs... From: Artful Codger Date: 10 Apr 11 - 01:52 AM Ran across the score for "Simon the Cellarer" (text given above by Nigel Parsons) online in Old Scotch Gems, p.42, at Google Books. As Nigel noted, the lyricist was W.H. Bellamy, but J.L. Hatton wrote the music. Several parodies can also be found at Google Books in Parodies of the works of British and American authors, Volume 4. A respondant in Notes and Queries (1858) states On the title-page of this song, published by Addison and Hodson, about 1847, it is stated that the words are by W. H. Bellamy, Esq., and the music by John L. Hatton. The idea of this ballad was probably suggested by the clever drinking scene in Meyerbeer's Collection of Songs. |

Subject: RE: Looking for a few good drinking songs... From: Eoin O'Buadhaigh Date: 26 Jan 12 - 06:34 AM WALLACE'S ALE Last Saturday evening, for my recreation, My task being o'er, I went to the fair, It was my intention a glass of good whiskey, Should warm my stomach, and drive away care; I met with a friend, when I went to the village, We stepped in together, ourselves to regale, To talk half an hour, of one thing or another, And try the perfection of Wallace's ale. A table and chairs, with a good warm fire, The waiter provided, we sat ourselves down, What happier moments could mankind desire, In height of good humour the tumbler went round; Although I was loaded with cares in the morning, They now in an instant began to set sail, All kind of good nature did vanish like vapour, By the strong operation of Wallace's ale. We talked of war, of peace, and taxation, Of Wellington great, and Bonaparte's fall, How he, and his pride and his great usurpation, Might be an example to potentates all; The organs of speech were supplied with the tumbler, It helped our memory the news to retail, With souls elevated, we warmly debated, Inspired by virtue of Wallace's ale. No more at the whiskey and rum I will tipple, The substance they waste, and the mind they impair, But unto the village when I have the metal, Again I'll return for to drive away care; There's good entertainment, and fresh from the cellar, The quart flowing comes, neither misty nor pale, For strength and for flavour, I never, no never Did e'er drink the equal of Wallace's ale. composed and published by Hugh McWilliams (hedge-teacher and poet) in 1816. We May and Might Never All Meet Here Again. Porter For my Tay. The Parting Glass. Whiskey in the Jar. Eoin O'Buadhaigh |

Subject: RE: Looking for a few good drinking songs... From: reggie miles Date: 29 Dec 21 - 11:20 PM Here's a recent video of me sharing my song, The Toolbox Party. The Tool Box Party ©2021 Reggie Miles All rights reserved I saw my saw was gettin' hammered As I was strummin’ my guitar He was guzzlin’ screwdrivers with the screwdrivers At the far end of the bar The vise and vise grip Were both getting kind o’ tight They invited the whole to tool box To party through the night The monkey wrench had his teeth Round a banana daiquiri And the file was soundin’ Sort o’ raspy to me From chuggin’ shots of whiskey With the plumb bob and level Who were both a few bubbles shy From their binging and revel The jig saw was jiggin’ With a jigger full o’ gin While the shovel was diggin’ A couple o’ hoes that just walked in The come along had come along To have a little fun It was half past eight Everyone was feelin’ great The party had begun The frame square squared off In a game of chance with the rake Who was rakin’ in the winnings Without makin’ a mistake So, I played another tune And sang another rhyme While everybody in the toolbox Was havin’ a good time. The nails were all getting’ bent As old crow-bar crowed for more The ladder’s twelve steps were wrung dry And thought the bash was a bore The tape was sizin’ up the crowd And askin’, What’s your pleasure? She knew how to treat us right As we partied through the night And threw in a few extra shots for good measure I saw my saw was getting hammered As I was strummin’ my guitar He was guzzlin’ screwdrivers with the screwdrivers At the far end of the bar And me I just kept on a pickin’ While everyone was actin’ like fools They were drinkin’ and dancin’ and gamblin’ It was one hell of a fling for the tools One hell of a fling for the tools Yeah, one heck of a fling |
