Subject: RE: Tune Req: William Tell Overture From: Mooh Date: 17 Nov 03 - 11:29 AM FWIW, Hal Leonard publishes a decent little fake book "The Real Little Classical Fake Book" which contains this and 600 other "classical themes and melodies in their original keys". I've used it much more than I anticipated because it's a great source for tunes for electric bass lessons (I transpose for the student usually), and non-pop guitar and mandolin. It has good (and many) chord changes indicated guitar style above the staff, and many melodies have supporting harmonies (like the Chopin stuff), all written in the treble clef. The only downer is the very small print, but all I do is scan or photocopy and enlarge (and sometimes cut and paste to tab it for students). It was an afterthought from a shopping trip and a good afterthought at that. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: William Tell Overture From: Don Firth Date: 17 Nov 03 - 11:57 AM Being aware that the part one normally hears (the fanfare and the "Lone Ranger's theme song") is only the concluding segment of the overture, which is a much longer piece. But this is probably all you want. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: William Tell Overture From: Inükshük Date: 17 Nov 03 - 02:36 PM Just wonderful! Thank you everybody. I have everything I need now. Does anyone else remember playing this tune with a pencil tapped against your teeth and changing the shape of your mouth to approximate the tones? Fun kid stuff in the early grades. Much appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: William Tell Overture From: Sorcha Date: 17 Nov 03 - 04:23 PM No, but I watched Mark Tingley(?) play it on a lap dulcimer with 2 pencils once..... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: William Tell Overture From: Don Firth Date: 17 Nov 03 - 05:03 PM Two guys were deep into puzzles and charades. The competition between them was fierce, and the big problem was that one of the guys always won and the other always lost. Then, the one who always lost suddenly had a brilliant idea. He called his friendly adversary and said "I've got one for you that you will never get! Meet me tomorrow at my place." Then he made some phone calls to an art school that had a call-list of models willing to pose in the nude, and hired eight young women. The following evening, the perpetual winner showed up at the perpetual loser's apartment. "Whatcha got?" he asked. "Okay, girls," the perpetual loser called. "Show time!" Eight young women in varying states of undress walked into the living room and lined up. Three were bare from the waist up and five were bare from the waist down. The first, bare from the waist up, stood facing the two men. The second, bare from the waist down, stood with her back to them. The next two pairs of women lined up in similar alternation. The remaining four, bare from the waist down, stood with their backs toward the two men. "Now," said the perpetual loser, confident of immanent victory, "What is that?" The perpetual winner walked back and forth for several minutes gazing at the line of women and stroking his chin. Finally, he said, "Got it!" "Impossible!" said the other. "It's obvious!" said the winner. "Titty-rump-titty-rump-titty-rump-rump-rump! The William Tell Overture!" "Damn, damn, damn! Lost again!!" Don Firth My apologies to anyone who regards this anecdote as "sexist." |
