Every time I click on this to check out, I check in. So to check in, I have to check out. Am I the only one confused?

Don't Americans have check out tills in their supermarkets?

yes - though "checkout counter" would be a more familiar form to us.

"Check out" in American-ese is equivilant to "Have a look at"

Santa:

"Check this out" is a fairly recent (last five-ten years) expression from the young, meaning to look it over, investigate it, eyeball it, scope it out, etc. With some forums you have to check in to the forum before you can check out the forum. Check?

A

Einchecken, durchchecken, auschecken.

Mein Arzt hat mich durchgecheckt
Ich muss das erst noch auschecken.

If we even conjugate it already in German, it must be old.

What had puzzled me on the Mudcat site for a wee moment was that the filter actually isn't out when you click on 'filter out'.

Wolfgang

In Alaska when we say 'the lights are out', chances are we're not talking about bulbs.

Once, nearly the whole CSSR icehockey team had names ending in 'check' (whatever your English transliteration is) which makes a lot of sense for Czechs and the reporter was heard saying "...Franticzech, Holyczech, Bodilczech, crosscheck!"

Check in--hotel, airline, conference

Check out--hotel

Check out (be careful with the transitivity on this one because it is used with a phrase) the ________ on her, him

Check it out--after understanding the pronominal referent

Check--got it or I agree

Cheque--thing that comes back from the bank

The worst is that library compuer systems designate a book that is checked out as "charged" that means when it comes back it is "discharged." No one ever understands this, but the manuals for the computer systems use these terms. The instructions end up being rewritten locally. Why they do not just call it check-in or return is beyond me.

check, czech, cheque
what you say when doing
a sound check on a mike.

so i guess a checker would
be a sound technician, but
a chukar is a game bird
like a quail or grouse

Burke:

Computer programmers are always writing things from their own point of view instead of the users; to them it makes sense that a book being carried on the records (loaned out) is charged because the register is loaded with the books data, and the record will be carried until discharged. It makes sense electronically also. Just humanly obscure. Typical geeks.

What about the _final_ checkout? To stop breathing.

Used to be the euphemism-haven't heard it much lately.
