I don't imagine this song has entered the annals of classic folk music but: I'm looking for a song that contains the line, "My mama told me not to put beans in my nose, beans in my nose, beans in my nose..."

Any information as to title, artist, availability, etc. will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you want "Beans in My Ears" recorded by the Serendiptiy Singers. It is available on CD at CD Now. Pete Seeger also recorded a song with that title but I don't know if it is the same song.

In the seventies there was a song called 'Beans in my Ears' on a K-tel album called "Dumb Ditties".

When I was in grade school, we had a math assignment where we had to count beans. Our teacher made a joke that we shouldn't put them in our ears and sang a little bit of the song. Sure enough, one of my classmates stuck a bean in his ear and after many failed attempts to dislodge it, was finally taken to a hospital emergency room. A true victim of folk music (also, an idiot).

There is a line in the song that says "Now why would want to put beans in your ears?"

I would want to put beans in my ears whenever that song came on the radio.

Rodney, I'm not in the least worried about Bill Gates. If you want to worry about injustice, consider Mumia Abou Jamal, on death row in Pennsylvania. --seed

btw, I'm not sure about the spelling.

right on, there seed. i wish that i knew how to do those little blue click here things so everyone could go and hear about that. not that i really know a site for it anyway.

bill gates isn't exactly the greatest victim of injustice i've ever heard of...

so, yeah, everyone should go and find out about him and get intensely angry and send lettres and good things like that. if you want to...
i hope you want to...

not bill gates. t'hell with bill gates.

oh, and seed, i think it's just "abu"

to find Mumia sites galore go here ....type Mumia in the search box....you get a long list... pick one and go to it....highlight the address in the box and 'copy' it (ctrl 'c')...then type this in the message box in Mudcat

[a href=address]click[/a]

except...put angle brackets instead of square brackets ....< & > then erase the word 'address' in the formula and 'paste' (ctrl 'v') the address into that space..(avoids typing errors)....the word 'click' can be replaced by any word or combination of words you want...that is what appears blue and is what you actually click on. The first address in the list is

http://burn.ucsd.edu/~archive/psnlist/1995.Jan/0019.html

putting it in the formula gives

[a href= http://burn.ucsd.edu/~archive/psnlist/1995.Jan/0019.html]click[/a] ...(using square brackets to show what it looks like)

using the angle brackets gives this with the word 'this' substituted for the word 'click'

(I keep a copy of the formula (HTML code) in a little file with others so I don't have to type them each time or remember them..)

there are other threads that tell you how to do this in more detail, along with other tricks...do a forum search on 'html'

Is it me or is there a level of absurdity that a thread that started out with asking about a song about placing beans in one's facial orifices has led to a discussion on Mumia Jamal.

And on to Arabic pedantry. Don't leave out the "Abu-". It means "son of"; I assume Mumia added the name "Abu-Jamal" when he became the father of a boy named Jamal. That's the custom in (much of?) the Arabic world.

O'Boyle, it's not absurd at all, given the meaning of the song, as indicated by the verses, as sung by Pete Seeger (first lines only, without the repititions):

My mommy said not to put beans in my ears.

Now why would I want to put beans in my ears?

Hey, maybe it's fun to put beans in my ears!

Hey, Mom, look at me, I've got beans in my ears.

"That's nice, son, just don't put beans in your ears."

I think that all grown-ups have beans in their ears.

Missus Jay's boy Elbie [LBJ} has beans in his ears.

The song, therefore, is about authority figures not listening to what they don't want to hear, something very relevant to the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal (thanks, Jerry, but wouldn't that mean that Mumia's father is Jamal, not his son?) in which the judge who presided over his railroading in the first place is the judge, under Pennsylvania law, who hears his appeals.

The irrelevancy was the note bemoaning the mistreatment (!) of Bill Gates which preceded my bringing up Mumia. --seed

My first posting of this seems to have disappeared, as have several other of my postings. And Joe, I don't care if it is in the trad, I needed the lyrics on the page to make my point. (do you follow every link when you read postings?)

threads which stay absolutely on topic are all very well in theory, but most people's minds don't seem to work that way...if something in a thread reminds them of another issue, very few will create a whole new thread to mention it...(and wouldn't it be tricky following the discussion if they did?)...sometimes a new thread is called for when one is totally changing the point, but I can usually follow things ok...

Maybe Max could create a frames version where parallel threads could be viewed side-by-side and HTML links to asides could be inserted like footnotes...NO!!! JUST KIDDING!!!!!

No, Seed, I don't follow every link. I do follow a lot of them, though, because people here post some good ones (and I usually make the links clickable if I follow them).
I have mixed feelings about the posting of lyrics in threads if they're already in the database. If somebody has requested a song that's already available online, then they sure as hell ought to be able to follow a link or do a search after getting instructions, and there should be no need to post lyrics. If there's a discussion of a song within a thread, then I think it's handy to have the lyrics handy right there in the thread. Although Dick is most vociferous in protesting the posting of lyrics from the database, I have seen him do it a time or two himself, when it serves to illustrate a discussion. That makes sense, and Dick is blessed with common sense.
Now, what really irks me is the recent practice of starting several threads on a topic - one for the lyrics request, one for the "add lyrics," and then sometimes one other for the tune or reasons I can't fathom. Then you get one person posting lyrics in a new thread, and another posting lyrics in the request thread, and a discussion split between two threads. The idea of the "add lyrics" threads, I thought, was to set up a new thread for a new song somebody wanted to share - a song that had not been requested. I don't know who came up with the cockamamie idea that you were supposed to reply to a song request with a new thread, but you see that silly practice every day lately.

Thanks for the clarification Joe, you've got me bang to rights guv. I am guilty of starting new threads to post lyrics that have been requested (twice). I did this as I thought it was the accepted and required practice. However since ignorance is no defence, I plead insanity, or should that be insanitary? probably both. I will in future desist stop and no longer continue.

Joe, this afternoon I wrote a response and tried three times to post it, failing all three times, obviously. The thread never appeared at the top of the list, so I tried it again and again. I also had difficulty starting a new thread--not the forbidden angel one but another I'll do when I finish this...I kept getting an error message, saying my error was in the fifth line (the name of the thread line, it seems).

Anyway, I was reacting interpreting your post as applying to me not out of paranoia, but because (A) it was addressed to me, and (B) because you had previously invoked the code of the mudcat on me on the Beans in my nose thread. So I was afraid that you were about to reclaim my Mudcateer Mudcat ears. --seed

Thank you all! "Beans In My Ears" was found on an album by the Serendipity Singers: "THE BEST OF THE SERENDIPITY SINGERS--Don't Let The Rain Come Down". I think I might have preferred the Pete Seeger version but I wasn't able to find it too easily. So I bought the Serendipity CD from www.shopping.com ($12.49 + $1.97 S&H). And now I can send it on to a child who stuffed a lovely purple stone up her nose. I imagine she'll make the connection.
