I've been trying to find the lyrics and music (recorded, preferably) to a song with the line "...and now the shore of Greenland lies between my love and I". I've heard it sung a couple of times, and I may have one or two words in the above line wrong. Has anybody heard it? Know the title? Thanks.

between my love and I????
Atrocious grammar. Must be a Neil Diamond song.

Actually, it isn't. The song is THE COLD COAST OF GREENLAND (click here). It ends with "And the cold, cold coast of Greenland lies between my love and me." Maybe Neil Diamond changed the words when he recorded it....

The ending of verse 5 sure grates me, though. I can't believe Ewan MacColl recorded it that way.

What Joe, no sense of drama or romance. How impractical to mourn forever!

5. "No shoe nor stocking I'll put on nor comb go in my hair,
Nor broad daylight nor candlelight shall in my room appear
Nor shall I wed with any young man until the day I die,
Now the cold, cold coast of Greenland has parted my love and I."
No, darn it, Roger. Since I am an great admirer of MacColl, I'm betting this is just a typo. What MacColl probably did was pronounce "die" dee like you might expect a Scotsman to, and then end the verse, "parted my love and me." MacColl wouldn't slaughter the language like that - would he?

Joe,

If he's as obtuse about English as I am, he might.

Never heard the song - but it sounds suspiciously like "The Lowlands of Holland" in one of the years they run the Elftedensdocht (or thereabouts) - with the whole country frozen stiff!

regards
