Some time ago a friend gave me a video tape with the Stan Rogers retrospective, "One Warm Line", the first Kingston Trio Reunion, and The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem Reunion Concerts. I have watched them all again after several years.

I am willing to make a few bald faced statements here and now. Stan was a talent that never reached his full potential. But the level he reached was beyond most performers pinacle effort.

The video of the fishing boat beating through a storm as "The Jeanie C" is song in the sound track is poetic.

The Kingston Trio of the Bob Shane, George Grove, and Roger Gamble was the best mix of musicians that group ever had.

Their version of "Early Morning Rain" is the standard trios should aspire to equal because getting it better will be very hard indeed.

In there prime, The Clancy's and Tommy Makem had a charm that over came the limits of the music they played and made it seem like theirs were the only voices that could do those songs.

There is nothing poorly done in this concert even tho' I've heard them all a million times. These are the guys I want to hear sing them again and again.

Don

Sorry Guys. This is a compilation tape from some friends. The tapes are available commercially. The Trio tape also has guest shots from a thin Mary Travers and Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, John Stewart and Lindsey Buckingham.

One Warm Line is available in Canada I would Imagine and The Clancy/Makem Reunion is a Rego recording I believe.

Interestingly within five years of making this group of tapes, Stan, Roger Gamble, Tom Clancy, and I think Dave Guard would all be dead.

I know the Stan Rogers tape is available from Fogarty's Cove - www.stanrogers.net . It is a beautiful production.

FWIW, November 19th is Dave Guard's birthday. He would have been 69 today.

The Stan Rogers tape is truly beautiful. The part that I find the most moving is about Mary Ellen Carter. A sailor from the Maritime Provinces tells of his experience in a small inflatable lifeboat after a svere storm hit the ship he was on. He was in the lifeboat for many hours in very rough and dangerous waters. He clung to hope and life by thinking of, "Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again..." There is so much emotion in his face and voice as he tells the story. I cry every time I see it.

Don- love your comments, and you are so right. I, however, don't think the Kingston Trio was ever quite the same without Dave Guard's wonderful voice and terrific sense of humor. He was the soul of the group.

"One warm Line" was first on a tv show on CBC, "Adrienne Clarkson Presents" hosted by Canada's current Governor-General.
The tape can be ordered from here:
http://stevebriggs.superb.net/stanrogers/1warmlin.htm
There are some video clips (real player) on this site of that show ,including a wicked set with Stan , Garnet, and Ryan's Fancy doing Barrett's Privateers.
I am sorry but I have no luck making clickies so you may have to type in the URL.
      Slainte,
       Sandy

Excellent production. I remember watching it when it was first broadcast on Adrienne Clarkson's show. (which has been satiricially referred to as "I'm Adrienne Clarkson and you're not.") It was back to back with an hour on Leonard Cohen. Don't remember much about the Cohen, but he appeals to many...

After Roger Gamble died, he was replaced for the next 11 or 12 years by original member Nick Reynolds. Towards the last few years, Nick's health was failing and he in turn was replaced by Bob Haworth.

The beginning years of Nick's rejoining far outshown the Roger Gamble years and was one of the best sounding Kingston Trios ever, lending a both old & new credence to their sound and legacy.

This, along with the credibility of having the two original members who played with both Dave Guard & John Stewart. That credibility is once again gone.

Except for the Live At The Crazy Horse recording I have never heard the Shane, Grove, Reynolds mix. I must admit that I liked the recording very much. The groupings I have seen are The Original, The Mix with Roger Gamble and the current mix with Bob Haworth. Of those I have seen I prefer the the Graove Gamble Shane combination. I would love to have seen them with Nick Reynolds in the more recent combination.

I did get to see the Shane, Grove, Reynolds version three times. Nick Reynold's natural harmony over Bob Shane's, coupled with George Grove's instrumental skills made the trio the most enjoyable including the "2nd" original with John Stewart.

The "Crazy Horse" album was truly great.
