I don't know what technology that might be, Joe and Jeff, but it crashed my brand new Dell hard and fast. Locked right up, couldn't even use the task manager to get that sucker to stop whatever it was trying to do. Had to resort to holding down the "on" button. You might want to check out whatever that link is, or give a little information about what to expect. Just what exactly is "downloading?"

I couldn't get Stu's chart to post right, but Pene Azul (Jeff) has made it available here: here (click). It's just a bit too complet to convert to an HTML table that will work easily in a Mudcat message.

Murray...Sorry to muddle things. All I mean to say is that capoing changes the root, not whether the chord is minor, 7th or whatever. E, A, and B7 in the original posted example becomes G, C, and D7 (not D as suggested earlier). That's all.

A minor correction to the original question, the E, A, and B7 become G, C, and D7 respectively. Capoing only changes the pitch of the chord (ie E to G) but not the major, minor, 7ths etc.

Look at the note of your bass string. The notes from the nut toward the body of the guitar are E, F, F# or Gb, G, G# or Ab, A, A# or Bb, B, C, C# or Db, D, D# or Eb, E. (I've left out double #s and double bs. If you are playing in the E position, whatever note your bass string is, is also the chord you are playing and the key you're playing in.

I find it helps to understand two basics. One is that the scale of C is all natural (no tricky sharps or flats, or all white keys on the piano). The other is that no matter what the key the scale is going tohave the same intervals.

The major scale counting in half-notes (one fret = one half-note) goes:

       2-2-1-2-2-2-1 which in the key of C means
   C   D-E-F-G-A-B-C.

If you're running up the E string you get the notes of the major E scale by going up   the same number of frets each step:
       2-2-1-2-2-2-1
E      F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-E

In the key of A (running up the A string) you use the same intervals and get the notes of the A scale:

       2-2-1-2-2-2-1
A      B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A

You can figure the notes of the whole fret-board out using these datums.

When you play the E chord (and the A chord), the same notes are fretted as with the G bar chord (and the C bar chord).... with the capo instead of the barred first finger on the 3rd fret.

Work it out -- E+ 1/2 tone = F, + 1 tone =G. So you're playing G-C-D.
