Subject: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: PaulineL Date: 19 Nov 03 - 11:10 PM I'd like to hear about theories or conjectures on the meaning and origin of "Roaring Jelly," which is sometimes given as an alternate title for "Smash the Windows." I look forward to some good stories. |

Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 19 Nov 03 - 11:47 PM That rumour has been spread about, but it wouldn't explain the fact that the tune was printed under that name in vol. III of Gow's Repository of the Dance Music of Scotland (n.d. but before 1807). |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Snuffy Date: 20 Nov 03 - 08:27 AM I knew a girl called Jelly (short for Angelica) |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Jeri Date: 20 Nov 03 - 09:12 AM Not that I actually know anything, but a 'jelly' was an ointment of some type. I can only wonder what jelly might roar or be used to make one roar or when one is engaged in roaring... |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Snuffy Date: 20 Nov 03 - 09:19 AM Petroleum jelly is indeed an ointment, Jeri, but raspberry jelly is what I think you Transponders call jello |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Jeri Date: 20 Nov 03 - 10:09 AM Snuffy, 't'wasn't always so, I believe. I got this from "A New Song, Call'd The Batchellor's Answer to the Helpless Maiden" posted in Scarce Songs I on Bruce Olson's site: You need not want for young Men's Love |

Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Dave Bryant Date: 21 Nov 03 - 04:33 AM Christmas in Australia is Christmas in paradise Christmas in Australia is (boom, boom) bloody nice Bruce is cuddling Sheila and Sheila's cuddling Bruce And if you haven't got a Christmas suntan Then you're a pom and you're no bloody use. I'm trying to remember some of their other songs, did they write the one about "Queen Victoria riding on a bicycle" or the one about drinking cider with a chorus about hedgehogs and birds of paradise ? |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: DG&D Dave Date: 21 Nov 03 - 11:20 AM Kitty The Derbyshire based band got their name from the tune, which doesn't help the original query much. Their song which sticks in my mind had the chorus: To the sound of maracas in Caracas, in the nightclubs and bars Maracas in Caracas and spanish guitars The Samba and the Rhumba beneath latin stars And the pretty Senoritas who don't ware no eyeshadow. Very strange! Dave. Who liveth so merry... |

I loved her in the morning, I loved her at night I loved her in the evening, when the stars were shining bright I loved her in the springtime and I loved her in the Fall But last night, on the back porch, I loved her best of all... and I think one of my favourites was Just you and me and a wind up gramophone (?) Subject: Lyr Add: CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA From: GUEST,Penny Black - JohnB PeteS Date: 21 Nov 03 - 06:07 PM We're still doing some of their stuff - don't forget though - who wrote Xmas in Ossy! -- and here it is in watsit......... CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA. Spoken Forget your snow and reindeer and all that there malarky 'Cause down here Father Christmas wears a pair of shorts.---- Khaki. Chorus. Christmas in Australia, is Christmas in paradise, Christmas in Australia is basically, 'Bloody Nice', Bruce goes steady with Sheila, and Sheila goes steady with Bruce, And if you don't have a Christmas suntan, you're a 'Pommie' and you ain't no use It's ninety in the shade at Christmas, the sun's a blazing 'phew', So grab a tube of Foster's and a slice of cold kangaroo. Bruce is waxing his surf board, and waxing his Shiela too, It's a great Australian Christmas, ya-hoo. Chorus. It was a lovely sunny Christmas, we had a party on the beach, Sang Australian carols, you should have heard us screech. Our 'Silent Night' was a burst of light and the likes are heard only seldom, Of 'Once In Royal Bruce's City', in a little town called Melbourne. Chorus. Bruce and Sheila disappeared round the far side of the truck, They were gone for quite some time, we shouted, "Are you stuck?" Then I had a bright idea, said, "I know what I'll do, I'll play 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' on Bruce's didgeridoo. Chorus As the afternoon wore on everyone got paralytic, A drunken brawl developed from a friendly game of cricket. Rolph Harris turned up finally to distract us from our combat, By painting a lovely picture of Rudolf the Red Nosed Wombat. Chorus. |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Herga Kitty Date: 21 Nov 03 - 06:22 PM Now, I know I'm getting on a bit, and it was a long time ago, but wasn't there an album about Mazawattee tea? Kitty |
Subject: RE: Roaring Jelly (Smash the Windows) From: Blowzabella Date: 21 Nov 03 - 06:37 PM As far as I recall there were only two albums - and a single (not definite, could be wrong) - the first was Roaring Jelly's Golden Grates and the second was In the Roar. The single was Christmas in Australia (and I think Bucketful of Mud was on the other side). |
