Thanks!

PASSING THROUGH
(Catie Curtis & Mark Erelli)
from the album "Long Night Moon"

We are passing this world on to our kids
From the day when they climb from their cribs
We'll try and teach them well, show them that they're loved
But in the end all we can do is hope our best was good enough
They'll witness how this life can be so beautiful and cruel
We can't shelter them forever but if we show them all the tools
They might leave this world in a little better shape than me and you
We are only passing through

Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through
Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through

We are watching this world from our living rooms
Near forty years since we walked on the moon
This big blue ball is shrinking and I don't know if that's good
But for better or for worse now this whole world's our neighborhood
And there's no place left to run to, to stay above the fray
We better learn to get along not just to get our way
Not only for each other but our children's children too
We are only passing through

Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through
Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through

And I wonder sometimes what will I pass on
How much can one voice do with just a song
Sometimes injustice and indifference are all that I see
But I refuse to let my hope become the latest casualty
So I'll sing of love and truth and try to practice what I preach
If I can't change the world, I'll change the world within my reach
What better place to start than here and now with me and you
We are only passing through

Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through
Passing through, passing through
We are only passing through
We are only passing through

words and music by Mark Erelli and Catie Curtis c2006

For the record, here are the lyrics, from CMT

PASSIN' THRU
(Johnny Cash & Randy Scruggs)

Well, I have stood upon the mountain,
I have seen the other side,
Wrestled with the devil,
I have wrestled with my pride.

Been down in the valley,
I have stood out in the rain;
Seen my love forsaken,
Felt the pleasure and the pain.

There's one thing that's for certain,
One chord that rings true:
Well, it's a mighty world we live in,
But the truth is, we're only passin' thru

I have cried in tears of sadness,
I have cried in tears of joy;
I have found a life worth livin'
From the peace within the noise.

I have turned my back on hatred,
Lyin', prejudice and greed;
Found the future in the present,
Found hope within a seed.

One thing that's for certain,
One chord that rings true:
It's a mighty world we live in,
But the truth is, we're only passin' thru.

Passin' thru, passin' thru,
It's a mighty world we live in,
But the truth is.
We're only passin' thru.

I have seen my bucket empty,
Seen my well run dry;
But there's water down the road,
And I'm only goin' by.

If I'm settin' on dead-ready
When my chances come to knock
I'll make it where I'm goin' -
I'll be tall just like a rock.

But there's one thing that's for certain,
One chord that rings true:
It's a wicked world we live in,
But the truth is, we're only passin' thru.

Passin' thru, passin' thru,
It's a mighty world we live in,
But the truth is,
We're only passin' thru.

Yea, it's a mighty world we live in,
But the truth is,
We're only passin' thru

recorded by Joan Osborne as "I Have Stood Upon The Mountain"

bseed(charleskratz) probably gave a verse from "the other Passin' Through".

Check out the Earl Scruggs 25th Aniversary record.

It has Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs and Johnny Cash on it, but I believe it is not the same song.

I moved the messages from the folkie "Passing Through" (Blakeslee) over to the Blakeslee thread. This thread is about a different song, a bluegrass standard penned by Johnny Cash and Randy Scruggs. Lyrics are above. If you're talking about a different song, don't post here.
We're still looking for chords for the Cash/Scruggs song.

We first heard this Cash/Scruggs song when listening to old recordings of Mike Harding's folk show - the version we heard was by Don Henley (of Eagles fame), and we do it based roughly on that one. Chords we use are D, G, G7 and A7 (capo on 9th fret) and E, A, A7 and B7 (capo on 7th fret).

For the verses we stay on the same chord (D on 9th fret). The additional chords come in for the other parts.

Passin' Thru (Cash/Scruggs)

             D
I have stood upon the mountain, I have seen the other side
             D
I have wrestled with the devil, I have wrestled with my pride
             D
And I've been down in the valley, I have stood out in the rain
             D
I have seen my love forsaken, felt the pleasure and the pain

             G
There's one thing that's for certain
                                          D
There's one chord that rings true
         A7
It's a mighty world we live in
               G                                 D
But the truth is we're only passin' thru

I have cried in tears of sadness, I have cried in tears of joy
I have found a life worth living from the peace within the noise

             G
There's one thing that's for certain
                                        D
There's one chord that rings true
         A7
It's a mighty world we live in
               G                                 D
But the truth is we're only passin' thru

             G   G7                D
Passin' thru-ooh, passin' thru
             G   G7                D
Passin' thru-ooh, passin' thru
         A7
It's a mighty world we live in
               G                               D
But the truth is we're only passin' thru

I have turned my back on hatred, lying, prejudice and greed
Found future in the present, found hope within a seed

There's one thing that's for certain
There's one chord that rings true
It's a mighty world we live in
But the truth is we're only passin' thru
Passin' thru-ooh, passin' thru
Passin' thru-ooh, passin' thru
It's a mighty world we live in
But the truth is we're only passin' thru
It's a mighty world we live in
But the truth is we're only passin' thru
