Does anyone have the lyrics to this song by "Sting"?

Specifically, is he singing about fields of folly, barley, or what?

Hi, Wldcare - pop songs like that are best found in places like The International Lyrics Server. "Fields of Gold" are what are found almost everywhere here in California, from May to December. That's why they call us the "Golden State." Of course, since I'm not a native Californian, I know the "gold" is really "brown." Maybe Sting spent too much time in California, or listened to too may travel agents' glowing descriptions of California.
Aw, I shouldn't be so cynical. It really is a pretty song, even if it isn't a folk song. I think, though, that Sting left the type of gold up to the listener's imagination - although some of the fields are specifically defined as barley.

Ach, Joe, you have no poetry in your soul. In Britain, especially Scotland, toward harvest time when the grain is ripe, the sun is low in the sky and the spectrum is into the red, the grain fields, literally, shine like gold. That is, if it isn't raining!

Thanks for your replies. I don't think I was very clear about what I wanted to know. Within the lyrics, he sings in several places "on the fields of _______", and the word in the blank place sounds like folly - or barley - or there are several other words that could fit. I just can't hear good enough to decipher it.

I'll try the other site you recommended. Thanks again.

Bless you, Joe. I just clicked over to the web site you recommended - which you had queued to the right place, and there was the song - complete with the word I was having trouble with - "barley".

Thanks again.

Sorry this is a bit sketchy but I heard this song in a concert over the weekend after quite a few beers. It went something like:

First line..... Among the fields of barley. Second line.... Among the fields of gold.

I think I remember the tune OK but I would dearly love the words if anyone can help.

Cheers, Peter

Peter,

I don't know how many beers you had. There is a song at the Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection that has the following line in it:

O dearly do I love to Rove, among the Fields of Barley

You can type in Bonnie Charley in the search engine and get the sheet music, so to speak.

I suspect it is not the one your want for their is no talk of gold in the first verse. Depends on how many beers.

Hi Peter.
I suspect the song your looking for is``Fields of Gold´´,by Sting.
2nd line in each verse is``Among the fields of barley´´´,
4th line in each verse is,``Among the fields of gold.´´

I can check back later with a full set of words if this sounds like what your looking for?

Greetings John.

And it's not the golden barley from California anyway, I believe Sting said, on a recent chat show (Parkinson) that he wrote it in England somewhere (can't remember where he said) while he was looking out over fields of barley - and whenever I've seen barley fields they seem to shine gold to me, not brown, even when it's raining. Maybe we have some special wheat where i live!

For a really beautiful version of this song, listen to Eva Cassidy. I think it is on the Songbird CD.

Mary Black sings it in concert, too; which means perhaps for a "pop" song it has some connection to the world of folk and traditional singers...

Thanks for mentioning Eva's version, Arkie. When I read your post, I consciously realized that the version that started running in my head when I clicked on this thread wasn't Sting's, though I do love the original, but instead was Eva's. What a talent. Ah, me, but some of 'em die too young....

I live in dry-farmed barley country....gold, definitely gold. It's the wild grasses (and weeds) covering California's rolling, golden hills that turn brown. A barley field is a thing of beauty...even the bales, looking like some vast version of a low-lying stone henge, especially in the late, slanting afternoon sun, are stunning. (And I think Cassidy's version captures the aching beauty of these fields perfectly).

Much as I like a drop or 2 of cabernet as well as the next imbiber, I hate to see these fields of gold all being converted to regimented vineyards by the 1000 acre.

Llewellyn, That song is by Sting. It's called: Fields of Gold. It is on his album: Ten Summoner's Tales. I bet you can find lyrics and chords at Harmonycentral.com then click on the tabulature tab. Beautiful little tune. Hope that helps. Good luck. Cheers, Tom

FIELDS OF GOLD
(Sting)

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze a while
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me?
Will you be my love?
Upon the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold

[bridge]
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold

Thanks, Guest - in all the threads we've had on this song, I don't think anyone ever posted the lryics. We've always posted links, and all the links are dead now. We used to be fussier about posting pop songs, but we've loosened up on that. We do try to have verified lyrics, so I went through your post and verified that the lyrics were indeed correct. I consolidated the threads that didn't have much in the way of information about the song.
-Joe-

And for completeness, here are the chords:

Thanks, Guest and Joe. Words, and chords even!

This was sung at my late beloved's funeral, 9 years ago next week.(He was a farm boy, loved the family land). I wonder if I can learn it now, or will it always be choke-up material. I'll give it a go.
