My sound card is dead so I can't here the clip. However, my favorite rendition is on:

Eliza Carthy & Nancy Kerr
Mrs Casey Records MCRCD3991 / MCRC3991 (CD / cassette, UK, 1993)

It still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

Dave.

Iwas a young man I was a rover...

thanks for your reply. i've found a clip of the version you mentioned and unfortunately its not the one i'm looking for.

for those without soundcards....

my clip is no later than 1992, has a solo female vocalist, and the lyrics as far as i can make out are..

"through bushes and through briars,
i lately took my way,
for to hear the young birds singing,
and the lambs to sport and play."

The singing is a little breathless and hurried, I thought, and rather heavy on the reverb. I can only add another negative: it is not Susan McKeown, who has made what seems currently to be a popular recording of the song; she has a stronger voice.

Yes I checked a clip of Susan McKeown's on Amazon and it's definitely different.

There is no obvious other recording listed in the All Music Guide.

Haven't heard it, but the song is on a Loreena McKennitt album.

Not listed on her website though, so far as I can see. Otherwise, I might suspect her of being the perpetrator; it's characteristically wispy.
