As of last night, John Barden's regular Hare and Hounds session (thanks for the effort you put into it over the years John) is no more.

At about quarter past ten last night the pub manager (pissed again) stumbled in and grunted something in swamp language (a bit like Noel Gallagher without the charm) to the effect of "Children in Need, cover twenty to carry on". One informed reaction by a participant was that he understood neither the syntax nor the logic of the expression. After some thought and questioning we deciphered the utterance to mean that he or someone else (we never did find out which) had offered twenty pounds to the registered charity "Children in Need" if we would stop playing, but that if we paid twenty pounds to the charity we could carry on.

I told the manager that that was unacceptable, that if he wanted a contribution to charity he could ask, but to suggest that we had to pay to be allowed to play was wholly offensive. I gave him a contribution and packed up.

John also gave him a contribution and a free full and frank exchange of views followed.

The rest of us packed up.

John (rightly in my view) announced that he would hold no more sessions there but that the Monday sessions (First Monday in the month) at the Greyhound should be supported in stead.

Which reminds me, the next Greyhound session is on the 8th, not the 15th, December, announced wrong at the last session there. Pass it on!
