Well, my video recorded it without a problem. Watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I suppose it was a bit corny in parts, but oddly refreshing all the same. I loved the way the music and song were worked in to the film, not just as a soundtrack but as people actually singing and playing.

I had already seen the video of Down From the Mountain, which I enjoyed so much I watched it twice in a couple of days (not something I normally do). The music is presented a bit more formally in this, although it still has a rather naive and unsophisticated feel about it that I found delightful.

I'd recommend either or both to anyone interested in American traditional/folk/country/bluegrass, as a real contrast to the over-produced pop-based stuff that often passes for American "folk" music today.

I set my VCR to record it, but all I got was all the commercials, plus a couple of 1-minute clips of the film!!

Seemed rather corny and old hat to me. It could have been the big screen version of the dukes of hazard. Music do not maketh a good movie I am afraid ha ha.

Well I enjoyed it. I thought it was a pretty good film in its own right... slightly disappointed to be told at the beginning that it is 'based on Homer's Odyssey', as I knew it would mean me looking for all the references instead of sitting back and enjoying. Still managed to enjoy, though. Great music, and the Sirens are cute...

A fine soundtrack wasted on a ho hum film I thought, heart in the right place though...music as a force overiding bigotry etc.

As a companion to "Oh Brother" you might consider buying "Down From the Mountain" the film of the concert performed by the musicians who sang the soundtrack.

The film was a little patchy. The South looked pretty much like the one shown in those Burt Reynolds car case movies..............The music was very good.

Not Robert Johnson but Tommy Johnson (as he is called in the film) who is met just after he sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads at midnight. Something that the real Tommy Johnson claimed he did but which gets attributed to Robert Johnson.

I never buy DVDs but I bought this one. A classic! Great music. Tape it while youre watching it. You'll probably want to see it again.

Isnt their a Robert Johnson lookalike sound alike in the movie ???

I'm yet to see it,but ever since I first heard of the film I thought I'd heard of something along those lines.

Can anyone put me right on this matter to enthuse me to give it a watch.

It may well have been shown on Sky but I don't think that it has been shown on UK terrestial TV before - I had been looking out for it so I would be very surprised if I had missed it......

Anyway it is on Channel 4 tonight!

Wow! thanks Cluin, I have to find this gem asap. I don't live near a video rental shop with a large selection so I guess I'll have to try one of those mail rentals, if the film IS available for rent.

The more I read about Sullivan's Travels the better it sounds.

The Coen brothers borrow bits and pieces from many sources, McGrath of H. I watch the film about once a month and find "new" things each time I do. I recently got a copy of The Saragossa Manuscript and found a scene in THAT film that must have inspired Mel Brooks to create the Blind Hermit scene in Young Frankenstein. It all makes sense, though. Film makers also watch films. It is great fun to catch instances of "cross pollination". Almost as much fun is to note odd bits in a film, seemingly unrelated to the story or errors that weren't edited out.

There are other bits of Sullivans Travels that are used in O Brother, notably the scene in the cinema with the convicts.

If its in the UK shouldn't it be "O Bother, where art thou?"

Now here is a puzzler; I tuned in to the last ten minutes of an American film, possibly made back in the forties. Couldn't get the gist of the story as it was ending. One of the characters, I guess he was a Hollywood writer or director spoke of his pet project, the title of which was: (drum roll) "O Brother Where Art Thou?". I couldn't learn the name of the film as our PBS local just went on with it's programming after the film and didn't mention it. Anyone know what 1940's movie I am referring to?
