When I was younger I had the Camden recording of the YMCA presentation of Thomas' masterpiece with Thomas himself in the cast. It was rough, recorded with a simple tape deck set on the stage and (I believe) one microphone. But it was Magic!

I urge all who can attend this production to do so. Dylan Thomas' work was (and is,in recorded sessions done shortly before he died) worthy of our attention and valuable as spoken word carried to exhillerating creative heights. Thomas was truly a Bard. Oh I wish I could be there, what a joy!!

The recording was made at the first staged reading of Under Milk Wood in NYC My 1953. Thomas had been writing the script for over a decade, but was still handing the actors rewrites up to the last minute. Six months later he was dead. At the reading someone set a mic on the stage on a whim, and it remains the only recording of Thomas reading Under Milk Wood. Beautiful.

We are a group of young actors from everywhere brought together by this fictitious Welsh fishing village. Not to be missed.

Who are you playing, Emily? Are you Polly Garter or one of the Mrs Dai Breads? Are you guys attempting Welsh accents or is Llaregub in New York State? I grew up not too far from Laugharne (between it and Swansea), and the play means a lot to me. The version I'm most familiar with is the BBC radio version with Richard Burton, but I've seen it on stage a few times. It's done in Welsh annually (I believe) in South Wales, and my mother used to go every year. She thought the translation was really good, and preserved the characters beautifully. Good luck with your production - I wish I could see it.

I am in fact playing Polly Garter. Along with Mrs Butcher Beynon, Mrs Utah Watkins and a handful of women, drowned and children. We've edited the script down to an hour and a half but Thomas fans have assured us he isn't rolling over in his grave. We speak in Welsh dialect (only slightly more coherantly for our New York audience) and the ten of us remain on stage for the play's entirety, moving from narrators to characters. Our director is famous for his physical acting technique so the show reflects that work.

Was in Laugharne recently and can report that Dylan's writing shed was being refurbished for the anniversary. It certainly needed it!

Mrs Pavane has entertained at the holiday centre, (Seasons at Laugharne Park) at the top of the hill, immediately above the Boathouse, shed & 'Milk Wood'.

It's true! Llarreggub (read the name of the town backwards for the joke) was modeled after Laugharne and New Quay. Incidentaly Heather Wood, David Jones and David Kleiman will be preforming Monday 15th at our Gala Special preformance! em gunyou: good luck.Wish I was in New York. We have had a lot of Milk Wood and Dylan Thomas stuff here in England and Wales recently, with the 50th anniversary of the play and hia death. The Caedmon recording of the 1953 New York production is a treasured possession of mine. Do hope it goes well for you.

Some people want to spell ('Welshicize') it as Llaregyb
Wrong in 2 ways, it ALSO isn't proper Welsh and it spoils the joke.
(Dylan Thomas was not a Welsh speaker either.)

Laugharne is well out of the way. If you want to go there, I would advise a car. At least it is still a normal small town, with no tourist traps, and not tarted up for visitors.

The Boat House is now a small museum/visitor center and Browns Hotel is still there, with a picture of Dylan on the sign. The other house which Dylan rented at one time is privately owned and in a very poor state of repair.

In March, I took a party of our Italian friends there, and we were lucky enough to find the church itself open (it isn't ususally, during the week), we even visited the belfry. Dylans grave is marked with a white wooden cross.

There's so many different stories surrounding Thomas' death. 19 whiskies, the fatal morphine shot, the men at peace in Wales... any opinions one way or another?
