Subject: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Alasdair Date: 08 Dec 03 - 10:43 AM Hi there! I'm planning a trip to the celtic Colours Festival next year (2004) and would like some advice on the best place(s) to stay. I'm not so much interested in the organised events as I am in sessions and atmosphere. All advice gratefully received! Al |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Strupag Date: 08 Dec 03 - 10:56 AM Hi AL, I was there 2003 and loved every minute of it. I'll let those frinedly "Capers" give you the gen but I assure you that you will have a ball! Just for the record, my favourite wee place was Baddeck but I'd be happy to return anywhere on our most westerly hebridean island (to quote Sandy) Andy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 09 Dec 03 - 06:34 PM Hi Alasdair, The events will take place all over the island but the Baddeck/Whycocomagh area is central and offers quite a bit of accomodations. After the numerous concerts each night the performers gather for an all night jam (Festival Club)at the Gaelic College in St.Anns, near Baddeck. The Celtic Colours web site says that line ups will be posted on April 19 , so that may give you a better idea of where you want to be. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Barry T Date: 09 Dec 03 - 10:29 PM This sounds like a fantastic event. Is any part of it recorded or videotaped? If not, the coordinators may be missing an opportunity! |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Dec 03 - 07:19 AM It all depends on where you want to be, and what you want to do. Have a look at Celtic Colours Web-site You can ask all sorts of questions on the Celtic Colours Forum. Come and enjoy! |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 10 Dec 03 - 09:48 AM Hi Barry T, There is an official compiled cd releaseed each year featuring some of the performers. Some events are filmed, but i don't know of video tapes being made available. Private recording is tightly controlled and at most events prohibited. I would think that the folks at Rave Entertainment ( Max & Joella) have considered what you suggest. Perhaps with so many entertainers under contract to multiple recording companies the logistics is a problem. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Dec 03 - 10:04 AM Sandy, you are so right. It's been suggested as far back as year 1. Unfortunately, the cost to the festival for the performer goes up pretty high when video production is involved. They don't seem to mind the media being there, but usually it's a sound-bite or two/three, but to have someone market a video, the performers usually want higher fees and a percentage. From what I've been told, this is the case at Celtic Colours. The Yearly Compilation CD is something where the performers send a track in, so they control their own sound. This ensures they (the performer) sound at their best. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: GUEST Date: 10 Dec 03 - 10:19 AM Mabou...best place on the Island of Cape Breton, Check out the Red Shoe Pub. Enjoy, it is a wonderful event. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Alasdair Date: 10 Dec 03 - 11:40 AM Thanks for all the input. I'm familiar with the website, however it tends to simply list the events whereas I'm just as interested in atmosphere and spontaneous/unplanned stuff. Cheers Al |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 12 Dec 03 - 01:53 PM Alasdair. Did you look at the Forum section? IT's like this one, chat about different venues, and people step in and answer, or comment. It's a bit slow right now, but I imagine in a month or so, with Celtic Connections on in Scotland, a number of suggestions for performers will fill the forum again. Also, you might want to have a look at Current Issue of Celtic Heritage Magazine It has a thorough review of the Celtic Colours festival this year. Also, if you check out the Forum, you'll see links to Tom's reviews in the Rambles. He comes every year and tells all about it. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 10 Sep 04 - 08:33 PM That time of year is getting close again and tickets are selling fast. I have tickets to four events so far. What catters are going to be able to make it? Sandy |

Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Murray MacLeod Date: 03 Oct 04 - 01:15 PM Any chance of a detailed review of the Guitar Summit, Sandy, like you did last year ? |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Murray MacLeod Date: 03 Oct 04 - 01:46 PM Just realised that GUEST Bob Massie above is Anna Massie's Dad, and himself a mean picker and fiddler... Welcome to Mudcat, Bob, and I wish I could be in Nova Scotia to hear your talented daughter play. Enjoy the week, and if you bump into Tony McManus, tell him Murray says "Hi" |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 04 Oct 04 - 11:19 AM I try Murray , but I hardly qualify to review anyone. As usual there is a great line up for the Guitar Summit. Bruce Molsky, I know is a great fiddler, but I have never seen him or heard him play guitar. Anna Massie did great last year and I look forward to hearing her again. Gordie Sampson put on a great performance there a few years back. JP Cormier and Tony McManus are about as good as they come so no more need be said. I am a bit disappointed however, that Dave MacIsaac won't be there because he is playing at another Celtic Colours venue at the same time. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: sian, west wales Date: 05 Oct 04 - 02:19 PM It seems to me that Robin Huw Bowen will be there again this year. Robin puts on a very good show with his triple harp - well worth a listen. sian |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 16 Oct 04 - 10:57 PM This is a quick overview of the Guitar Summit for this year. First I would say that I was late getting to the hall in Judique so my seat was near the rear. My view of the stage was not great but the sound was fine. On stage from the audience left to right were JP Cormier, Anna Massie, Tony McManus, Bruce Molsky, and Gordie Sampson. These are five people far more talented than myself so my opinions are by no means a judgement and are entirely subjective. First JP is always breathtaking in his playing, but as good as he was I do not think that he matched the awesome performance of last year. He was playing an Ovation, which surprised me since he has been pushing Lakewoods of late. I don't think he was overly pleased with the guitar (he also hated the Santa Cruz that he played a few years back) Anna Massie I will leave 'til last. Tony was great and like JP did some amazing stuff, but again I don't think that this was his greatest performance. I was so far back that I couldn't tell what type of guitars were being played, except for the Ovation. Bruce Molsky's guitar style was a bit out of step with the Celtic style of the other four but he played a set on the fiddle that was mind blowing. Gordie Sampson,to my mind, was the best ("man") playing on that stage in that concert. I haven't heard him play the Celtic stuff in a few years . He has been songwriting, producing , playing more pop and even rock, but he hasn't forgotten the Celtic stuff and he played fantastic. Now back to Anna Massie. I had watched her perform from the sixth row a few nights earlier at the Celtic Women concert, where she brought the house down. I had also watched her on the Guitar Summit stage a year ago, and I was impressed then but she seemed rather nervous. This night she seemed totally relaxed and entertained with her wit as well as with her music. When she played she took no back seat to any man on stage that night, and her performance was the one that I enjoyed the most. As to be expected the overall show was fantastic . Tony was considered by many to be Scotland's finest Celtic guitarist. He has moved to Canada and just got married a week ago . He said that he met his bride at Celtic Colours a few years back. Maybe the title will now pass to Anna Massie and Tony and JP and Dave MacIsaac can fight for the Canadian title. However they better not look back because Brian Doyle and Gordie Sampson are gaining. Anyway, those are my humble impressions. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Murray MacLeod Date: 17 Oct 04 - 03:07 PM Sandy, many thanks for taking the time to post your impressions. Interesting that Gordie Sampson has made such progress, I saw him at the Guitar Summit some years ago and I got the impression then that he was almost apologetic for sharing the same stage with Tony, and kept referring to how much he had learnt from him while he had been in Edinburgh. Good to see that his confidence has grown. And it is also great that Anna Massie is not only holding her own but excelling in such august company. I didn't know Tony had got married a week previously. Maybe we was exhausted after the honeymoon ... |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 17 Oct 04 - 06:52 PM Gordie is a very good player and he was very much at home playing with JP and Tony. No doubt that he has learned a lot from each of them and has been a good student. Also I don't want to convey the message that the playing of JP or Tony was anything but wonderful. Any comparison made with their playing was to what I have heard them do before, perhaps a performance that can not always be duplicated. Yes, Tony was on his honeymoon and it was great that he was able to be here. Another thing Murray, as you know, the Celtic Colours is a party for the performers, that goes on day and night. By Thursday lack of sleep may be a factor. I was impressed by Anna Massie though at two performances. A bit off topic but Brian Doyle has played at the Guitar Summit in the past. Are you familiar with his playing Murray? I watched him at the Broad Cove concert this summer and I thought that he was great. In any case I make no claim to be any kind of a judge. I also don't look upon music as a contest. I do not play very well myself but I love the music and my impressions are only that. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 21 Oct 04 - 05:56 PM I was certainly glad to see Denise and Tony at Celtic Colours. It gave me a chance to congratulate them on the marriage. I remember when they first met, and watched enviously over the next few years. She is a very lovely and talented lady! Wish them every happiness! Yes, Anna has certainly grown in the last year. It's interesting to see these young performers as they grow into their roles as musical ambassadors. Sandy, did you stop in at the Festival Club on the Tuesday night? James Keelaghan was on stage singing one of his songs (one he DIDN'T do at Bards and Ballads earlier), and broke a string in the middle of the first verse. I was amazed as he kept on singing while changing out the string, and by the second chorus had gotten the string on and nearly tuned! I'm assuming that the way he plays guitar gives him lots of opportunity to practice that stunt! |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 21 Oct 04 - 08:22 PM George, I didn't get to any of the Festival Club as I have an early work day. Getting home at 4:30 AM when you have to rise at 5:30 just dosen't work. I seen you somewhere, SAERC or maybe Glendale but I didn't get a chance to say hi. Slainte, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: Murray MacLeod Date: 22 Oct 04 - 04:56 AM Sandy, no, I am not familiar with Brian Doyle's playing, he wasn't playing at the Summit the year I was there, but rest assured I shall be looking out for him in future. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Colours - Cape Breton From: GUEST,Sandy Mc Lean (lost cookie) Date: 22 Oct 04 - 06:42 AM Brian is the son of Maybelle Chisholm , nephew of Cameron Chisholm, and grand nephew of Archie Neil and Angus Chisholm , so he has great musical genes. He had a rock band called Greylock, but in recent years has been playing more Celtic stuff. The link below leads to a Rambles magazine review of a few years back . Sorry no clickie.
