Looking to sing this (with a trace of irony, perhaps - and yes! the devil has all the best songs...) I have the words and can remember the chorus tune from an old 78, but I can't remember the verse tune - can anyone help?

Thank you for that - I am probably being very thick but I can find the entry but where do I find the tune? Is it the filename 'cigwhis' and if so where do I find it?

AT the bottom after the lyrics, there should be a link which will plays the MIDI file (which is the file called cigwhis, or whatever) just by clicking on it, assuming your computer knows how to play it...MIDI files are digital musical files (acronym, formed from Musical Instrument Digital Interface).

In the particular tune - @displaysong.cfm?SongID=1191 - I can see the filename but nothing to click on.

Sure it's obvious but I can't see how to find it.

Thanks :)

Hmm, I've got a tune for the chorus, at least, in my head ... one that I heard recorded somewhere, so it's not something I'm inventing. I'll try to drop it into ABC and post it tonight or tomorrow.

My mistake -- not all the tunes have a MIDI file and this one does not. Cigwhis is probably the name of the lyrics text file. Sorry for the red herring.

You can hear a verse here at CD Universe, on

Jim Croce : Home Recordings: Americana

Just go down to the song in the list and choose either Real Audio or Windows Media to hear it.

I've said this before on Mudcat somewhere, but we used to have a 78 rpm of this until at my 16th birthday one of the guys frisbeed it across the room and it snapped in two. I was very upset because I loved that record.

A group I heard at the Celtic Festival in Hunter Mt., NY, do a neat version of this song on their Dreamers and Believers CD. They're called The Whole Shebang. I think the CD notes said they're from Dublin but I have a terrible memory so I could be wrong.

There's a complete .wav file of Homer & Jethro singing this song at this Tribute to Homer & Jethro site. However, the title is spelled "Cigareets, Whuskey, and Wild, Wild, Women." It has been recorded under that and other variant spellings, e.g. (according to AMG – The All-Music Guide):

Cigareetes, Whiskey and Wild Wild Women
Cigareetes, Whusky and Wild Wimmen
Cigareets Whuskey and Wild Wild Women
Cigareets, Whusky and Wild, Wild Women
Cigarettes, Whiskey & Wild, Wild Women
Cigarettes, Whisky & Wild, Wild Women
Cigarettes, Whisky and Wild Women
Cigerettes, Whusky, & Wild Wild Women

p.s. the owner of the above tribute site has not only H&J but several other artists that might be of interest to Mudcatters, such as Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.

From: Louie Roy

This song was written by Tim Spencer and was recorded on a 78 years ago by Red Ingles and the natural Seven.

CIGAREETS WHUSKY AND WILD WILD WOMEN

CHORUS: Cigarettes and whiskey and wild, wild women,
They'll drive you crazy they'll drive you insane.
Cigarettes and whiskey and wild, wild women,
They'll drive you crazy they'll drive you insane.

1. Once I was happy and had a good wife.
I had enough money to last me for life.
Then I met with a gal and we went on a spree.
She taught me smoking and drinking whiskey. CHORUS

2. Cigarettes are a blight on the whole human race.
A man is a monkey with one in his face.
Take warning, dear friend. Take warning, dear brother:
A fire on one end a fool on the other. CHORUS

3. And now good people, I'm broken with age.
The lines on my face make a well-written page.
I'm weavin' this story, how sadly but true,
On women and whiskey and what they can do. CHORUS

4. Write on the cross at the head of my grave:
"For women and whiskey, here lies a poor slave."
Take warning, poor stranger. Take warning, dear friend.
In wide clear letters this tale of my end. CHORUS

OK, I know that this thread only came up to the top because of a spammer (who may not actually deserve to die, but does deserve to get hurt real bad), but it reminded me that Oscar Brand sings an Air Force parody of this song on his LP of Air Force songs, apparently from the Korean War era. That one is "Cigareets and Saki and Wild Wild Women," and its pretty fun.

Thanks, Jim Dixon. That's the very same recording I learned the song from. I was thinking it was by Lonzo and Oscar, but no, it was Homer and Jethro. I had a big collection of old 78 rpm records but when my then wife and I moved to Canada in 1968, I was afraid that many of them wouldn't survive the move. So she and I spent I don't know how many nights after the kide were in bed, sitting on the livingroom floor and playing all the 78 records, one after another, on a little portable record player and recording them with a hand held microphone onto a reel-to-reel tape recorder. I still have all the reel-to-reel tapes but the tape recorder is now defunct so I have no way of playing the tapes. Darn!

One of my prized possessions is a worn and tattered sheet music copy of "Cigareets, Whusky And Wild, Wild Women". Words and Music by TIM SPENCER. There is a caption that states "Successfully Recorded by SONS OF THE PIONEERS for Victor Records" along with a marvelous photo of that illustrious group. At the bottom appears this information: TIM SPENCER MUSIC, INC. Sole Selling Agents HILL and RANGE SONGS,INC.
Inside it states, "Copyright 1947 by TIM SPENCER MUSIC, Inc."

It seems to me that this must be the original song as originally written. It has three verses, similar, but not identical to the ones previously posted. The verse about the evils of cigarets is not included. Undoubtedly, this song has undergone considerable folk process.

The sheet music was given to me as a lad by my favourite aunt when the song was on the hit parade. We still play it at every gig. Always gets the crowd going.

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:28 AM

I have been careful to reproduce the spelling and punctuation exactly as given. I was hoping to get the definitive lyrics, but see the note below.

CIGAREETES, WHUSKY AND WILD, WILD WOMEN
Tim Spencer, 1947

1. Once I was happy and had a good wife;
I had enough money to last me for life.
I met with a gal, and we went on a spree;
She taught me to smoke and drink whusky.

CHORUS: Cigareetes and whusky and wild, wild women,
They'll drive you crazy; they'll drive you insane.
Cigareetes and whusky and wild, wild women,
They'll drive you crazy; they'll drive you insane.

2. Now I am feeble and broken with age;
The lines on my face make a well-written page.
I'm leaving this story, how sad but how true,
On women and whusky and what they will do. CHORUS

3. Write on the cross at the head of my grave,
"For women and whusky, here lies a poor slave."
Take warning, dear stranger, take warning, dear friend,
Then write in big letters these words at the end: CHORUS

[From the sheet music in "The Reader's Digest Country and Western Songbook," 1983. The notes refer to a "second verse" that is "usually left out of recordings." Then it says, "all three verses are included here."—but I wonder if this is a mistake, and the "second verse" is actually the one that Louie Roy posted above (which is also in the DT)? –JD]

I have the Red Engel version, and had a 78 of it as a kid, with "Timtayshun" on the flip side.

Verse two, according to Red, is

Cigareets is a blot on the hull human race;
Huh man is a monkey with one in his face.
Here's my definition, believe be dear brother,
Huh fire on one end and a fool on the t'other.

And the last verse, more like this

Oh, stranger, beware or they'll write on your grave,
To wimmin and whusky here lies a poor slave;
Take warnin', dear stranger; take warnin', dear friend,
They'll write in big letters these words at the end:

There's a spoken introduction, as well;

A preachment dear friends you're about to receive,
On John Barleycorn, tobacco, and the timtayshuns of Eve

and a drunk who shouts, "Okay, let's hear it if it's so good!" and continues making rude remarks throughout the song, ending in this exchange:

Drunk: Sing "Timtayshun," will ya?"
Red: Dear friends (somebody get that bum outa here), we don't sing that kind of music here.
Drunk: Okay, then, show us your muscles!

Yes I remember the song very well, came out in the late forties early fififties. Im not sure of the singers but it was either the Webster family or the Walker family that played and sang it. It was quite
popular. It started out with a siloquoly (sp) which I think went
"I preach my dear brothers your about to receive, ole john barley corn, nicotine and a temptation of ever,(in the back ground - Ok lets hear it if its so good, hiccough). Then into the lyrics.
If you look at "Muppets" or go to this Url

he has the lyrics. He says he saw it on the Muppets, I dont know didnt qwatch them that much as Im now 71 years old. You can do the math.

As Jim Dixon posted, this is a Tim Spencer song.
Spencer (born 1908, Webb City, MO) was one of the original Gold Star Rangers along with Bob Nolan (born 1908, New Brunswick, Canada) and Len Slye (born 1911, Cincinnati, OH). Moving to Hollywood, they were hired by Harry Hall of KFWB, and he coined the name "Sons of the Pioneers." In the 1930's, the group appeared in many films, with Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, John Wayne, and others. Tim Spencer left in 1936 but continued to write songs used by the Pioneers. He died in 1974. Other hits of his included "The Timber Trail" and "The Everlasting Hills of Oklahoma."
The last of the original group, Len Slye, died in 1998- He was, of course, known to the world as Roy Rogers, the name he adopted in 1937 when he left the group. Rogers often used the Sons in his pictures.
Tim Spencer's "Cigareets, ..." appeared on D7VB 450 (Victor 20-2199) on January 5, 1947. The recording group included Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Ken Carson and Hugh Farr as vocalists, and instrumentalists Hugh and Karl Farr, R. Call, C. Roberts, Perry Botkin, Shug Fisher and G. Braunsdorf.
From notes by Brian Golbey, made for the ASV Living Era cds issued in 2002.

And then of course the military got a hold of the song, and over the last sixty years developed versions for the Korean, and Viet Nam Wars.

The former starts out, "Cigareets and Saki and wild, wild Josans" and tells the story of an aviator on leave from the war, looking for relaxation in Japan, and the Viet Nam version merely changes the names of the participants and locations. Josan is GI Japanese slang for a woman, and Saki a rice wine.

CHITOSE BLUES
(Tune- Cigareets and Whiskey)

Once I was happy and had a dear wife
I had enough Yen to last me for life
I met with a Josan and we went on a spree
She started me smoking and drinking Saki

Chorus: Cigareets and Saki and wild, wild Josans
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane
Cigareets and Saki and wild wild Josans
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane

I went to Asmuchi, a bath for to take
I met me a Josan who was on the make
The bath it was hot and the Josan was too
If you go to Asmuchi my boys you are through.

I went to my room, some sleep for to get
She said no sleep flyboy, I no sleepy yet
I woke the next morning at quarter past ten
She says, "Hey Yankee, thats four thousand Yen,"

I'm back in Chitose where we sing and we shout
Me and the Doc are sweating it out
He gave me some pills from a jug on the shelf
Then he poured out a dozen or two for himself.

The tune for the song is here, from an Oscar Brand record.

Like Charles in Thread #65097, I had the same 78 with the Red Engel version. What I loved about it as a 5 year old in 1949 was that it was wild! With all the rough singing and drunks calling out insults, it sounded like it was coming direct from a saloon. I loved it much more than the songs in my Al Jolson album. With my blonde dutch girl haircut, frilly dress and black patent leather shoes, I called friends on my toy telephone to tell them to listen, banged on my tea set in time, and bellowed along with the guys with utter conviction. Must have been quite a sight. Is there any way to get this version now?

all of Red Ingle's stuff is available on a fantastic cd from BEAR Records in Germany. I know, cos i have a copy !

28 tracks, many of them brilliant
as well as Cigareetes & Whuskey there are other classics such as A You're a Dopey Gal, Nowhere, and the amazing Prisoner of Love. It even has Erutan Yob [ Nature Boy spelt backwards ] that was the B side of the original 78. A complete treat .

I have it on CD both by Red Ingle and the sons of the pioneers.

Tim spencer wrote it as a response to his wife who didn't like him going on tour with the sons of the pioneers.

Roy Rodgers was in the sons of the pioneers as well
