Subject: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 11 Dec 03 - 06:21 AM Whilst imbibing in one of my favourite hostelries in Sheffield last night I noticed on handing over a small beer token worth five british pounds that on the back is a prtrait of Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) but it has to said what a minger she is. I just can't imagine doing the McDonald Shuffle with her. |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: IanC Date: 11 Dec 03 - 07:28 AM Before this gets consigned to the dustbin of BS, where it belongs, I'd just like to reply. The portrait on the £5 note is - obviously - of Elizabeth Fry in late middle age (old age in thise days). By then, she had had eleven children. In general, quakers didn't go in for portraits at that time, so I don't think there are any ones of her as a young woman. However, she was said to have been a very good looking young woman. She was, apparently, quite vain about her appearance. She had married into a "plain" quaker family and was thus only allowed to wear grey clothing. Her household accounts, however, show that she had them made of the best materials, including silk. BTW, her husband Joseph was once excluded from his local Quaker Meeting for wearing a red tie. I'm really not sure how relevant a comment about a fairly poor portrait of an elderly woman is to anything at all. It's certainly the case that what she did is what she's celebrated for. Perhaps anyone who's inclined to criticise her for her looks might find their time better spent in emulating her actions. After all, if you manage to do 1% of what she did during her lifetime you'd be doing pretty well. ;-) Ian |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 11 Dec 03 - 07:38 AM .. I think it's a vain attempt at humour missed by some. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: greg stephens Date: 11 Dec 03 - 08:17 AM I fear, Mr Fat(or may I call you MC) that attempts at humour on the internet are often taken seriously(but then, maybe people only pretend to take them seriously?). |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 11 Dec 03 - 08:21 AM No need for formality greg. I know what thou meanest there are some pompous twats about (oops sorry a bit contravesial) |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Ringer Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:16 AM I'm more interested in your favourite Sheffield hostelry. The Fat Cat? The Devonshire Cat (dire surroundings and full of students, but great beer)? The Cocked Hat (a particular favourite of mine -- I can usually find someone I know in there)? Do tell. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: okthen Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:21 AM What interests me more is how the word "minging" came into the "English" language, I think it's even wormed its way into the OED.Does its origins lie in "Ming the Merciless" or from the word "minge" or "mingy" Is this word known over the pond, are you responsible for it? |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:23 AM Favourite Sheffield Hostelries Kelham Island Tavern near Fat Cat good selection of brews inc Brewers Gold. Hillsborough Hotel with HPA. Fagans with Moonshine. New Barrack with Moonshine and Timmermans Peche. All of them an Elizabeth Fry minger free zone |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:24 AM Humour is rather more successful when in some sense it's funny. Just saying "I think that lady's ugly, I don't fancy her much" - well it's a bit hard to see where the joke lies. Wouldn't exactly get them rolling in the aisles. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Rapparee Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:26 AM Who the heck is Elizabeth Fry? Was she from the French side of the family? |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: IanC Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:36 AM Who is Elizabeth Fry ;-) |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: GUEST,weerover Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:39 AM I believe "ming" (meaning an unpleasant smell) was initially used predominantly in Scotland. Don't know the etymology, but I have a half-baked theory that it may be onomatopoeically linked to "hum", which is also used over here for an unpleasant smell. wr |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: jimmyt Date: 11 Dec 03 - 12:00 PM well, let me ask, what the hell is a beer token? Sounds like something we should have in the USA! |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Beverley Barton Date: 11 Dec 03 - 12:09 PM Oh, pardon me, I thought this thread was about fry's chocolate not Quaker's porridge oats. My apologies, back to the cooking channel. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Dec 03 - 12:52 PM Same family as Fry's chocolate. "a vain attempt at humour" - vain in both senses apparently. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 11 Dec 03 - 02:34 PM McFat - you know what I feel about people in glass houses!Besides with 11 kids she wouldnt have had time for a McDonald shuffle! Your attempt at humour was lost on me too as I didnt know what a minger was!! Beer tokens are MCFAT's term for money since thats all he buys with it! Dont like Fry's choclate - prefer Rowntrees another Quaker I believe Fry did a lot for prison reform but are we any better off because of it? Child abducted and 18 month sentence reduced 6 months for good behaviour springs to mind. Then released to do it all again! Also the lowest crime and theft rates in the world are in countrys that still cut off hands for theft and kill for murder!! |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Raggytash Date: 11 Dec 03 - 02:57 PM MC Fat, I hope some of the contributors to this thread are very careful as they climb off their horses, some of them are very, very high |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Ebbie Date: 11 Dec 03 - 04:34 PM McFat, my opinion of your judgement has fallen dramatically- and it was so high before! Judging by Elizabeth Fry's picture in that link that Amos provided, she was a good looking woman, probably a very cute girl in her day. Although born into a wealthy family, she worked for a worthy cause most of her life and accomplished a great deal. May we all do as well. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Rapparee Date: 11 Dec 03 - 04:37 PM I really didn't know who she was. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Dec 03 - 05:37 PM Here's todays useless information re: currency in general and why the people on our paper money are all elderly or hairy. Apparently, a bearded or wrinkled face is a lot more difficult to forge than a smooth one. It's got to be harder to reproduce all of those little lines. And the next bit of useless information - almost all the chocolate producing factories in Britain were started by Quakers - they were forbidden by law to go college so certain professions (those needing scientific or business qualifications) were unavailable to them. Instead, they went into trade and so, the great chocolate producing factories of the world were created. Go to CadburyWorld, near Birmingham (Bourneville actually, it's a real village!) in the UK and they'll tell you all about it. LTS |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Bob Bolton Date: 11 Dec 03 - 08:36 PM G'day Liz tS, I seem to remember hearing that, for the same reasons of Establishment prejudice and exclusion, Friends ('Quakers') were excluded from the self-indulgent London banking fraternity ... so they started local (northern) cooperative banks for frugal non-conformists ... like Barclays. They also invested in the sort of endeavours unpopular with the London 'Flash Set' ... the coal mines and canals that were the foundation of the Industrial Revolution! Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: wysiwyg Date: 11 Dec 03 - 11:42 PM A woman of her looks would no doubt have been called "handsome" in her time. Perhaps any woman appearing on a grubby beer token near the end of a long evening would be a bit smelly, eh? Look where she's been! ~S~ |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Linda Kelly Date: 12 Dec 03 - 03:44 AM I remember in my youth, being able to take a five pound note, make folds in in vertically, by which time the queen appeared to be having oral sex. It's not a great memory admittedly but somehow seems relevant to this thread. |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: greg stephens Date: 12 Dec 03 - 05:23 AM McGrath: I'm surprised you havent spotted by now that you cannot use intellectual argument to decide whether something appears funny or not to another person. Basically, as a rule of thumb, if it makes them laugh, it's funny. And you cant prove it isnt, just because it's unsuitable, however much you'd like to. |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Gurney Date: 13 Dec 03 - 05:27 AM Before I got down as far as WYSIWYG's post, (which I also bookmaked), I'd already looked up the word, as I come from 80 miles from Sheffield and had never heard it. Here are additional meanings for Minge, from the Archaic dictionary. Minge: to mention. Mingd: Anal. 'Batchelors Orthopaedic' Minging: shivering with ague. Some people want to simplify this elastic language. I'd be happy if I could speak it. I only knew the vaginal and tightfisted meanings. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 13 Dec 03 - 07:30 AM I don't know if anyone has said this but the word 'MING' means smelly, dirty, not clean. Love Tom frae Saltcoats |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Oaklet Date: 13 Dec 03 - 03:56 PM Apparently "Ming" can also mean "in-drink vindictive postings in an illiterate style, performed whilst hiding behing the anominity of "guest" on a forum, to be read by those who don't give a flying fuck about the content of the message." Fuck off, airhead. |
Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Linda Kelly Date: 13 Dec 03 - 05:27 PM well said oaklet. Anyway I also seem to remember you could fold a note so it looked like John Mcenroe - but I can't remember whether he was having oral sex as well |

Subject: RE: I'nt Elizabeth Fry a minger From: Beardy Date: 16 Dec 03 - 06:27 AM MCFat, as from your distant memories minger referred to smelly, how have you concluded from a poor representation of the lady on a scrunched up 'fiver' that she honks a bit? If you were impuning the lady's comeliness your original post may have some relevance but I fail to see how we may make a similar assumption on her fragrance. Stewart |
