I just heard this by Geoff Mulldaur and would like to learn it. His picking reminds me a lot of David Bromberg. Help with the tune and chords would be most helpful. Jim

Jeepman - there is a videotape from Homespun tapes that has a lesson from Geoff on how to play that song. I can tell you he has his low E string tuned down to D. And he modulates back and forth between D major and D minor at the start of the tune. It's tricky to figure out. I suggest you get the tape. Several other good tunes also like Ox Blood Moan. It's worth every penny.

Where did you hear the song ? On "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere" ? For the record I'm very interested in finding a copy of "Poor Man Blues" by Geoff - it was released back in the 60's. I've had no luck ordering it.

Thanks, Wesley. I listen to a snippet of it thru CD Universe. If you search his name you will get a list of albums. You can listen to a bit of most of them. I also enjoy his singing with Jim Kweskin and jug band music. I will get back on the album this came from. Jim

There is a live CD recorded in Germany called "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere" just Geoff and a guitar - just the way I like it. A '30's Martin 12 fret slot head actually. The recording is considered an import here in the states { where are you again ? } but I got one at Barnes and Noble.

I should have mentioned that his producer Stephen Bruton is from my hometown of Ft Worth. So he did a great live show here about two years ago - in the same room where we had our wedding reception. Lots of great stories and songs. Like what it was like to take Mississippi John Hurt to the beach for the first time { just after the Newport Folk Festival }.

I was prompted to look into this thread because I recognize the title as one of the most popular numbers played at New Orleans jazz funerals. In that context, of course, the song is primarily played as an instrumental piece, and I have rarely heard the lyrics being sung. (I can hear in my mind's ear how the words of the title fit the opening line of the tune, but that's about it.)

I became a great admirer of Geoff Muldaur the first time I heard him sing on a Kweskin Jug Band record, way back in '63 or '64. I've begun hearing and reading *about* him again more recently, but haven't heard any of his recent work (except for excerpts of a recent album featured on an NPR "AllThings Considered" report, where he wasn't singing at all, but playing clarinet on an instrumental project for which he did the arrangments -- I *think*.)

If this discusion doesn't prompt me to make an effort to catch up on Geoff's work (especially as a vocalist), shame on me!

As said above, the song appears on Muldaur's Secret Handshake, Beautiful Isle, and the Homespun tape. It was written by E.M. Bartlett and is nor public domain. It is, in fact, a New Orleans funeral march. It is great fun to play...I recorded it on my cd..there is a 2 minute clip HERE

Thanks Jeep man. I will work out the basic chords and send them to you in PM over the next few days. (basically D, G, and A in dropped D tuning) As Wesley mentioned, a lot of times the chords are represented by unusual figures, and frankly, I have no idea what chords are represented. Check out the video...it is a great look at a wonderful player. You can check out a clip of it HERE

i have seen muldaur perform this tune a few timese at passim. can't see it enough.
his playing is smooth as his singing, like silk. one time he made a mistake, my brother ,(also a great player) was thrilled that my hero actually made a mistake. he is the greatest blues performer i have seen.

Geoff Muldaur & Jim Kweskin will be at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, on Fri. Dec. 7th - two of my all-time musical heroes, and two of my favorite people to play music with. I have another gig that evening but hope to make it over to the Freight by the 2nd set.

From Geoff Muldaur and Jim Kweskin's Penny's Farm album:

Just A Little While To Stay Here

[D] Soon this life will all be over
and our pilgrimage will end [D7]
[G] Soon we'll take our heavenly [D] jour[B]ney
[E] Be at home with friends a[G]gain [D]

Heaven's gates are standing open waiting for our entrance there
Some sweet day we're going over and all the beauties there to share

Just a little while to stay here, just a little while to wait
Just a little while to linger in the path that's always straight

Oh, just a little more of trouble in this low and earthly state
Then we'll all go marching over, sweeping through those pearly gates

Just a little while to stay here, just a little while to wait, oh
Just a little while to labor in the path that's always straight
