Subject: BS: Rick: Hi caloric drinks.....help
From: Rick Fielding
Date: 18 Dec 03 - 11:45 AM

As you may know, my battle with cancer has caused a pretty severe weight loss as well as loss of appetite for about half the foods I used to love.
As a a calorie supplement, I've been deinking a canned concoction called "Ensure" which provides 235 calories, but at almost eight bucks a six pack it's (along with my medications) making a huge dent in our already highly shaky finances.

So....question: Are there things on the market (like stuff the weightlifters use that can be stirred into milk to give a big dose of calories.....or just anything else you can suggest that might help me regain some of this lost weight....preferably liquid.

Thanks friends

Rick

do you like eggnog? Milk - an egg, dash of a flavoured coffee creamer for variety (and additional calories)

1 cup whole milk = 150 calories
1 egg = 75 calories (approx)
flavoured creamers = 40 calories /tablespoon

so if you used 3 tablespoons of the creamer with a cup of milk and an egg you'd have 345 calories.

if you are antsy about the raw egg - using an egg substitute would probably be about the same calories

hi Rick; can you tolerate dairy products? What about getting a nice frappe/milkshake/cabinet (whatever they call it where you are) and drinking it all down?
You could also make a smoothie with whole milk yogurt (Stonyfield makes an organic one, with the cream on top; mix it in before using), banana, pineapple juice (or grape juice which has LOTS of calories!) and maybe some extra dried milk powder...yogurt is better for   those with milk or dairy intolerance, and is good for the gut besides...I have never tried those protein supplements you mention. Most of them are not high calorie, just dense with protein. Maybe your doctor could recommend something? I would guess there must also be some nutrition forum online where someone would be able to suggest something.
good luck!

I suppose you have considered Guinness, right Rick?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I wish I had something seriously to recommend because few thing would pleasure me more. Most of my thinking recently, though, has been what can I drink that WON'T increase the calories?

A 20 oz bottle of regular (i.e., non-diet) cola should provide around 300 calories. EMPTY calories, mind you.

Dairy products -- REAL milk shakes, for instance -- would help, if you can take dairy products.

So would beer. So a Guinness milkshake....

Rick,

Bodybuilding weight gain products typically provide about 500-1000 calories per serving. It's different than just protein power, but looks and tastes about the same. I even see them in regular drug stores now. It's not cheap, but should be cheaper than Ensure.

You might also consider a regimen of digestive enzymes and probiotics (about 30 days), which should help your body utilize the food you are eating better.

Instant pudding, all flavors, made with extra milk and whipped thin before serving. (I'm seeing Heather in the kitchen, with a name change-- BlackBoots instead of Duckboots, lots of shiny chains and studs).

Baby formula is pretty high in fat I think-- maybe add some of the powdered form to other items.... There are also fine-milled instant baby cereals that can be thinned to drinkability with milk or cream, and maple syrup.

Syrup..... chocolate syrup by spoonfuls? Butterscotch, caramel sauce?

Egg custard with a high ratio of egg to milk.... Egg Beaters mixed with cream and rum....

Frozen fruit juices made with 7-Up...

Carnation Instant Breakfast.
If you go to the page for Health Care Professionals (I selected Nurse and Hematology/Oncology) there's a link to the left that says "Compare our products." Same amount of calories as Ensure, and it's got more of other things at half the price (which includes the price of milk).

The problem with weight loss due to a sucky appetite isn't JUST calories. If you're not getting vitamins and minerals, you can screw up other things. If you're not getting enough protein, you're losing muscle mass. You don't want too much protein as it's not good for your kidney, but 'enough' would be good. (And there isn't a whole lot of protein in a milkshake.)

It still strikes me that if you need something because of a medical condition, it should be possible to have your Nat'l Health Care at least help with the expenses.

AS you've become aware, cancer not only changes your desire for food, but it also changes your taste buds as well. You may have things that you once hated that now sound better. The key to maintaining and gaining weight is start eating/drinking in non-traditional ways and eating foods that sound good.

First, know what's high in calories and see what matches your taste. Do you like cranberries as in juice maybe? About 300 calories for a glass. But it's high in sugar and that's a bit of a problem because several forms of cancer love sugar too. But you can lower that by getting a concentrate frozen which is often lower in sugar (a lot lower) and mixing it with water only or using it with yogurt in the smoothie style.

Second, don't think about eating at traditional mealtimes. Anytime is now your mealtime. If you want to eat something, eat it right away, even if it's only a small quantity. Find a few things that do taste good and make them up in advance so you don't have much prep time between the desire and the eating. You've probably already had the situation where you felt hungry for whatever and by the time you got it ready, you were nauseated by the thought of it. If it's quick and handy, you have more chances of eating it.

Don't worry about quantities. If you take two bites and are done, fine. Half an hour later you might want more. Go grab it, heat it (if needed), and eat it. Only two bites again? No problem. Maybe later. I guarantee you will eat a lot more this way but only of the foods are quick to get to, readily available....so start now by choosing some things that have sounded good in the past few weeks, seeing how they measure up in calories, and getting them prepared in small portions, ready to go at the drop of a hat (or the faintest idea of hunger).

Review some other foods as well. Remember that many fruits and veggies can be made into drinks. When you're feeling the way you do, it's hard to sit and think of something that might be good. So here's a thought.......Go to The Calorie Counter Website .....a really excellent site with long lists to help jog your memory and taste buds as well as accurate information on calories, proteins, sugars, etc. See what you can find.

All this is a bit labor intensive and I apologize for that....But you can put together 3000 calories a day of healthier eating a lot cheaper than buying that friggin' Ensure.   My friend Denny kept things going a long time this way. He was terminal from the start, but only in the last few weeks (5 years after the diagnosis) did he really show it....because he got into this as soon as he started losing appetite and weight. He found at one point that he could eat a cream cheese bagel, but it took 3 feedings. Almost 800 calories though....and when combined with some other things he liked...voila...mucho calories. He had not really beena fan of peanut butter to any great degree, but out of the blue, it sounded good to him. After that, he kept a big jar handy and close to the silverware srawer. Grabbed a tablespoon and went for it. PB is super high calorie and cheap.

Go see what you can find that sounds good now and try it. Have it made up or easy to eat and have it handy. Eat it whenever you want and however much you can. Every bite is probably calories you weren't getting before.

Just my opinion.........

Spaw

Don't forget about malted milk powder. It's got extra nutrition, fabulous flavor. I once found an interesting Indian brand at an Indian grocery (got any?) and it was marketed as a food supplement!

Yummy with any flavor ice cream, or just warm milk.

There's something here called Virol, which I think is just malt extract. It is used a lot with underweight children in particular, as it perks up the appetite or increases absorption or something useful like that.It comes in a jar and tastes bloody awful but it does work.

Is there anything from the UK I can get you that you might find tempting? Happy to send it along if there is. I know we have something called Complan but I think it is just Ensure by another name and tastes revolting but if you or Heather can think of anything else, lemme know.

From the days when I could eat anything.... Those spoons of peanut butter dipped into sugary hot chocolate mix...

The powdered Carnation Instant Breakfast can be added to Milkshakes. YOu can also fix it as a hot chocolate drink.

Another possibility is Making "double" milkshakes. Here's a couple examples

Frothy Eggnog

2 cups milk
2/3 cup nonfat dry milk
1 whole egg
2 egg white
2 tablespoons apple juice concentrate
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground nutmeg to taste.

Process all (except nutmeg)in a blender til frothy.

Double Shake

1 cup milk
1/3 cup instant nonfat dry milk
1 frozen overripe banana, cut into chunks
1 tablespoon apple juice concentrate
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dash on cinnamon (optional)

Variations

Add 1/2 cup frozen berries and 1 tablespoon of applejuice concentrate

or

add 2 Tablespoons orange juice concentrate

check out coconut milk and coconut oil...high in calories, high in lauric (monolauric? acid)..good for many ailments. oil can be taken straight, or mixed with chocolate, peanut butter etc. for candy, put in tea etc. Babies and invalids supposedly can survive on the coconut water (not the same as coconut milk)...and you can transfuse people with it when blood products are in short supply, as in wartime. It has many nutrients etc. Also the various nut butters...chocolate...if you feel nauseated by the thought of food, ginger has anti-nausea properties.

The thing with Ensure is it also provides a lot of essential vitamins and nutrients, without a lot of undesirable fats. But it IS expensive; like baby formula. Peg had a good suggestion with the milkshake above, I believe. I was very thin as a teenager and my doctor sent me to a dietitian who made the suggestion (among others) that I have a milkshake each night before bed.

I didn't really put on much weight till my 20s and the beer drinking and labour jobs commenced. ;

Good luck, Rick.

i have enjoyed a health food supplement Spiru-Tein
it contains spirulina and is described as an energy shake.
It is a soy based product. it is high protein and low calorie.
you are not looking for lo-calorie...but this could provide
some of the nutrients...you are wanting..by Natural Organics
Laboratories, makers of Nature's Plus products.
http://www.naturesplus.com/defaultjg.htm

there is another energy shake product called Peaceful Planet
by Veg Life--again hi protein not necessarily hi calorie..
http://www.nutraceutical.com/about/veglife.cfm
produced by Solaray..http://www.nutraceutical.com/about/solaray.cfm

Have you tried a (doctor-recommended) medical marijuana?
it will help with appetite (munchies!!)

Hi Rick,
I can't really add much to what has already been said but I know Ensure is way more expensive than other ways of getting fat!

Or you could just eat like I did yesterday (it was a stressful day) and have a bagel with banana and four cups of coffee for breakfast, lamb shank with mixed vegetables and roquefort sauce, bread and butter, mixed salad and glass of wine for lunch, (a friend took me to the local French restaurant for lunch,) two hershey bars and a cow tail after a trip to the dentist, two handfuls of cinnamon encrusted almonds for a snack upon returning from the gym (where I went three miles on the treadmill), two chicken fillets with rice and butter and a margarita for dinner, and more cinnamon encrusted almonds for a snack!

And I wonder why I can't lose more than ten pounds in six months!!!!

I'm thinking about you and hope all is going smoothly. I heard the last two cuts on your show this past week.

love, harpgirl

Knowing absolutely nothing about it, of course. . . .

I second Jeri's suggestion that Carnation Instant Breakfast might very well be a good replacement for the more expensive Ensure.

Some years back, after years of singing in coffeehouses and clubs and going to bed at two or three o'clock in the morning and being able to sleep 'til around noon before my first guitar students came, I wound up going to work for Boeing. This meant a twenty+ mile drive on an overcrowded freeway, then participating in the demolition derby in the Boeing parking lot in an effort to get a parking spot within an hour's walking distance of the plant — and after all this, punching in before 7:00 a.m.!!! Talk about a life-changing experience! No time for breakfast, which left me cranky and ready to eat my Rapid-o-Graph pens by 9:00 a.m. So the night before, I when I made my lunch, I would include a portable breakfast that I could consume in the car as I sat there on the freeway looking at the rear bumper of the car in front of me. One of the breakfast thingies I used to fix was a pint thermos of Carnation Instant Breakfast. Tasty. I particularly like the egg-nog flavor, but they're all pretty good.

But it didn't really stick to my ribs very well. Then I hit on the bright idea of making it with Half and Half (half milk, half cream) instead of just straight milk. That was even more tasty, seemed pretty substantial, and it would usually last me through 'til lunch-time. Especially if I could grab a donut on my morning break.

I eat a whole lot better these days (actual food, most of the time). But playing around a bit with Carnation Instant Breakfast might be worth the experiment.

Some Weight Lifting food supplements can contain all sorts of unstated things - especially if sold over the web - and may include impurities which can be nasty, as well as vetinary grade products. Can also contain things that cause athletes to fail drug tests. take care with such products - and I don't think they are all that cheap anyway.

I have a friend (under 40) who by means of pigheaded denial and basic stupidity managed to push himslef into near death from type one diabetes - the ER said that he probably was only a few hours from death when he finally consented to go to hospital - he almost could not walk. His father did the same thing years before and went blind as well, - as I said stupidity and denial.

He is now trying to put on weight with milk based mixtures - including things such as added extra powdreed milk, AktaVite etc.

Some of the recepies above look interesting enough even for me - and I'm in no need of putting on weight at the moment... :-)

If you like the taste of honey, it is pure (sugar type) calories which may be digested easier for some people. Add it to drinks.

You can get ginger in the japanese pickled style (it comes in a sugar based one as well as a "diabetic" form) as well as the normal crystallised form. I have a friend who needs to take certain medication, and she keeps crystallised ginger around - one or two pieces nibbled help keep the nausea under control in the morning. If you realy like ginger, you may be able to find powdered ginger (used for making ginger biscuits when I was a kid), which can be added to milk shakes.

My father left us 30 years ago - he had leuklemia. Spaw's advice about "small but often" is very good - snacking is how most "normal" people like me got overweight anyhow :-)

And I had difficulties with a spirulina tablet - to much caused me to get very "loose" below - I couldn't take it for more than two or three days in a ro, and only at a fraction of the recommended dose - not all people are the same. It did seem to help otherwise though at the time.

And hang in with your music - even if you don't feel like playing much on any particular day - think about something that has been a big (and mostly pleasurable) part of your life in a favourable state of mind. Endorphins help the healing process. You also may not feel much like laughing, but laughter also produces endorphins.

Take care,
and hang in there!

Robin

Morti, a cow tail is a long, cylindrical caramel thingie with a sweet, milk-flavored middle.

Robin, I once took a medicine that made me nauseous, and then I found crystilized ginger. The BEST I ever had (ginger) was imported from OZ, by the way. Yes, it really works. The problem with me is I couldn't just eat one or two pieces and the stuff disappeard WAY too fast.

Said it before, but be very careful about too much protein as it's rough on the old kidney.

Yes, the best ginger is allegedly from up the North Coast in Queensland - an hour or two north of Brisbane - if you are ever out here, visit the farm - they have a "tourist trap" shop. Hmm, Yandina, I think from memory. I prefer the "Dragon Breath" grade... but you can get medium and mild... :-)

Spaw, she is SO gonna get your for that!

Robin, I'll have to see if they're on the web someplace. The stuff is expensive as a sweet, but as a medicine, it's cheap. In addition to the crystalized ginger which you can suck on or just eat, there's powdered ginger in capsules and ginger ale, I think - if it's still flavored with ginger, bit it's not as good as the real stuff. I'm aware of a study that was done on ginger's effectiveness on motion sickness and they found it as effective as Dramamine.

They are one of those little treats that inevitably give more calories than you thought and often can be left in the fridge ahead of time. See if anything seems appealing... This site had some interesting information on weight gain during illlness, as well as these recipies. I'm not sure what Nutri-Vir is but it does seem to pack protien if the counts above are right, I would check your Doctor before adding all the protien.

Sorry, it was BUDERIM!!!!

http://www.buderimginger.com/commercial_info/about_buderim_ginger/default.asp

Don't know if they export to individuals, but I'm sure they do sell overseas - tell them it is for a sick person, and ask if they can tell you who in US or Canada they might sell to.

I would suggest mämmi, but since it - being traditional Easter stuff - is out of season right now, I won't:)

Nutrivir is actually covered by Medicaid here in the states. It may be worth checking into (assuming the protien content isn't too high)... Cost wise it definately beats Ensure.

Lots of good suggestions above.

If you don't have a blender, get one for sure.

Milk can sometimes be a challenge to digest so if you are going to use soymilk instead I recommend Vitasoy Vanilla as the best tasting product.
It is available in most large grocery stores.
choose vanilla, chocolate or strawberry over natural soymilk which can taste too beany.

Soymilk will contain more calories than almond milk or rice milk

Add to your shake suggestions posted above:
tahini mixed with honey
or peanut butter (might tire of peanut butter taste)
or almond butter & cashew butter are available at natural food stores They are pricey but good
2 Tbsp of protein powder - available at natural food stores - go for the lowest price

Blending in NoriNu soft silken tofu available in large grocery stores. You won't taste the tofu if you add a sweetener honey/maple syrup. It will add a boost of additional calories, protein & add a creamy smooth consistency to your shake.

Crystalized ginger is available at natural foods stores and for sure at Vinces Foods (bulk bins) 555 Steeprock (416) 636-6146

Hope that helps,
Bonnie

Are your teeeth cold sensitive? It would save time and work on those milkshakes if you just have softened ice cream. A good chocolate ganache to pour over it is your favorite chocolate w/ heavy cream nuked briefly (1 - 2 minutes) and stirred until chocolate is melted.

You can puree veggies too, and eat warm with as much melted butter or flaxseed oil as you can stand.

You could beg or borrow a juicer and do veggie juice -- all the calories, none of the fiber. Do carrots or beets bought by the box. Pumpkin whip. (full of sugar but tasty.)

Good luck.

Rick, it's good to see you starting a food thread again! You've always asked some entertaining and engaging questions about food.

I agree with some of the suggestions above, especially about having tempting snacks handy so you have them there to eat when you're looking for something fast and simple. I avoid dairy now, as much as I like it, because I don't feel good when I eat it. Milk IS for babies, after all. But because it is a good source of calories and protein look at the range of possiblities--yogurt made from whole milk will not only have nutrition and calories, it will have acidophilus (spelled more or less like that!) that is extremely helpful not only for digestion and keeping the lower GI happy, but good when dealing with other health situations as well.

You can get a blender or food processor and blend all sorts of things. It takes finding the right combinations. How about making something hearty like split pea soup (I know we've discussed this in a thread in the last year or two!) and pureeing in some extra ham or other veggies or powders with vitamins and protein?

Macaroni and cheese is another dish that can be simple with white sauce, cheese, and pasta, or you can add a few other ingredients to make it a heartier casserole. Quiche is a versatile dish (custard with eggs and milk and cheese and meat and veggie combinations in the pie crust.)

For tempting tidbits, a trip to the deli counter and cutting up small packages of sliced meats and keeping some good grain crackers and cheese will let you cherry-pick whatever appeals at the moment. Beef, ham, turkey, sausage on hand with a couple of cheeses and you're ready for a little picnic. Depending on queaziness, the crackers should help by themselves (it works for morning sickness!)

Products like Ensure are marketed not just to those who have health problems but to mainstream populations--that doesn't make it a good or even reasonable choice for most people. I hope these suggestions help!

SRS

Lots of good suggestions here. One other thing you might try, if you can stand meat, is to make a paté of beef, pork or lamb roast, mixed with a little relish and mayo. Blend to a thick, but not dry, consistency and keep handy for putting on crackers.

Nuts.
no, seriously, throw some raw nuts in with those smoothies; that adds lots of calories and healthy fats...and some raw nuts are alkaline-forming in the blood (like raw almonds) which is very good for those who are healing from illness...
Any luck Rick? I hope you continue to mend.

I only know that kind of dog food that my sons eat to grow muscles, but I bet that they are not recommendable at all. There's a lot of good suggestions here, Rick. My best wishes are for you to gain weight and feel better very soon. You and your wife are always in my thoughts.

(I've taken some steps in Neapolitan Canzonetta and was very well received by the audience, mainly by Italians and descendants, who form one half of the Argentina population)
Un abrazo,
Andrés

For a change in sweeteners, blackstrap molasses is pretty good in a banana smoothie, and has good mineral content, not just empty calories.

A dollop of sour cream stirred into both hot and cold soups can up the calorie content significantly. Sour cream and cream cheese both can turn potatos mashed with roasted garlic into a high calorie treat.

Smoothies made with honey are also high in calories.
