other tune and lyric request...
i remember a song called Bar Be Que
done by a california group a few
years back called Way Out West.
The members of this group have
gone on to make music with others.
Joe Craven plays with David Grisman
and others. Tracy is now with a
Cajun group called Mumbo Gumbo,
any one know of these...?

????

Barbeque
Robert Earl Keen

Ooh when I was a little boy
Only one or two
The first thing that I did enjoy
Was a plate of barbeque
Barbeque sliced beef and bread
Ribs and sausage and a cold Big Red
Barbeque makes old ones feel young
Barbecue makes everybody someone
If youre feelin puny and you dont know what to do
Treat yourself to some meat -- eat some barbeque
Now there was once this girl I knew
She treated me so mean
I offered her my barbeque
She licked my platter clean
Barbeque sliced beef and bread
Ribs and sausage and a cold Big Red
Barbeque makes old ones feel young
Barbecue makes everybody someone
If youre feelin puny and you dont know what to do
Treat yourself to some meat -- eat some barbeque
Dont give me no broccoli
Or any Swiss fondue
Baby if you wanna rock me
Give me good ole barbeque
Barbeque sliced beef and bread
Ribs and sausage and a cold Big Red
Barbeque makes old ones feel young
Barbecue makes everybody someone
If youre feelin puny and you dont know what to do
Treat yourself to some meat -- eat some barbeque
Now, dont send me to heaven
It aint where I should go
Cause the Devils got a charcoal pit
And a good fire down below
Barbeque sliced beef and bread
Ribs and sausage and a cold Big Red
Barbeque makes old ones feel young
Barbecue makes everybody someone
If youre feelin puny and you dont know what to do
Treat yourself to some meat
Let your feet hit the street
Find a good place to eat
Get some barbeque

Joe Craven says this at his web site:
Way Out West was a trio, 1984–92?, including Bill Edwards, Tracy Walton and myself. We were chasing after some different kinds of musical stuff, in part, because of the sum of our different musical backgrounds. Fun, creative and at times, wacky, the great song writing and musicianship of Edwards and Walton and my penchant for twisting the folk tradition and music in general, produced two recordings: "Dancin' with My Feet off the Ground" and "Twisted Roots". They are no longer available.

Way Out West did a reunion concert a few years ago in Felton, CA and had reissues of their albums on CD there. Joe Craven's website should have details on it.

The song was called "Barbecue" and is NOT the song listed above.

Mumbo Gumbo did a cover on it on one of their albums (Tracy Walton is in both groups).

The lyrics went like this:

"here they come as they are in the summer heat
they come with a cold six pack and a cooler of meat
coming through the gate and into the yard,
the band is a rockin' and a rockin' hard
Open the gate, come on through
everybody wants barbecue.
Open the gate, come on through
everybody wants barbecue.

Well daddy's got a fork three feet long.
He can juggle those ribs with his barbecue tongs
flip patty over, flip patty back
keep the insides pink and the outsides black.

Barbecue... hot coals!
Barbecue... tinfoil!
Barbecue... let's go!
Everybody wants Barbecue!

correction (cut and paste botch)

"They come a-runnin' in the summer heat
with a cold six pack and their favorite meat.
Comin' through the gate, into the yard,
the band is rockin' and a rockin' hard.

Open the gate, come on through
everybody wants barbecue.
Open the gate, come on through
everybody wants barbecue.

Daddy's got a fork three feet long.
He can juggle those ribs with his barbecue tongs
flip patty over, flip patty back
keep the insides pink and the outsides black.

Barbecue... hot coals!
Barbecue... tinfoil!
Barbecue... let's go!
Everybody wants Barbecue!
