Subject: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: GUEST,Skipjack K8 Date: 19 Dec 03 - 06:39 AM It seems I have failed to keep up with the UK Mudcat community in the vituperative stakes, so I have been casting around trying to find a subject about which to be totally unreasonable. It is a toss-up between motorists who over-illuminate their vehicles on a permanent basis with fog lights, or people 'personalizing' their motor cars with silly letters and numbers that allegedly (and you do need some imagination) spell something approximating to their name or initials. Why is it that Range Rover owners in particular predominantly bedeck their tanks with 'Look At Me' number plates? In the great days of Leeds United playing in Europe, I took a trip round the players' car park at Elland Road, and to a man they all had trashy new money plates (H4 RTE springs to mind). Hazarding a guess, folkies are an unlikely church to embrace this sort of flashiness, but are there any 'Catters brave enough to admit having one? There, I feel better now. BTW My real name is Danbert Nobacon, and I don't care who knows it. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 19 Dec 03 - 07:08 AM Some years bck I saw an attractive lady driving a fancy car - her numberplate was KEPT. Unfortunately all the other personalised plates I've seen or read about in my favourite paper weren't so striking so I can't remember them. We have (only) had personalised plates since the 70'. Folks were getting plates with their first & last initial, so one of my collagues decided to get one. Unfortunately his initials were GG, so he had to use his first & second initial - GA. At the time I wondered what was the point in getting it. Not now. sandra |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: catspaw49 Date: 19 Dec 03 - 07:18 AM We have lots of "Vanity Plates" here in the U.S. Most are just that......Once in awhile you see a cute one but for the most part it's pretty dumb......BUT..I have a good story for you. My wife Karen's step sister, Kelly, was 25, married to Mark, with a 2 year old baby daughter. She was 3 months pregnant with their second child and she and Mark could not have been happier. Then she was diagnosed with an incredibly fast spreading and virulent form of cancer. Karen's sister Karolyn had been pretty close to Kelly and she did everything a person could do to help out. Mark was completely devastated, trying hard to hold it together. Karolyn engineered some great things for them as the end came within only 4 months for both Kelly and their unborn child. As a child, Kelly loved Disney World and Karolyn sent them there with herself and two nurses along to help out. Even so she ended up paying for a Life Flite back to Atlanta when Kelly had another bad period. About two weeks later, she was dead. The Docs said this was faster than they had ever seen this cancer move and attributed part of it to te fact she was pregnant with the corresponding changes in body chemistry. Kelly and Mark were happy young people and he was in bad shape, but he and Kelly talked a lot and Karolyn was often involved with the conversations because they had asked that she help Mark after she was gone. Kelly said that Mark should take the insurance money and set up a fund for their daughter's education, but that he should take some for himself and buy the Corvette he'd always dreamed of having. Mark couldn't bear the idea. After Kelly died and everything had been handled, Karolyn was and is still helping to raise the little girl... a real sweetie....and the trust fund is well endowed from Kelly's sizeable insurance settlement. Karolyn told Mark he should also go buy the Corvette. It took about a year, but a few months ago, Mark and his little girl pulled into Karolyn's driveway in a new 'Vette. Mark had also ordered a Georgia vanity plate for it. So if you're in Atlanta and you see a bright red Corvette with a license plate that reads LAST WISH.............Well now you know why. Spaw |

I don't know the rules in USA but here in the UK we have limited choice and must keep within the quite rigid rules so ours range from the unintelligible to the ridiculous. Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 19 Dec 03 - 11:00 AM Here in Kentucky the official plate is so ugly (here, many people pay and extra $10 for a special plate. Mine has a butterfly on it. You can get all kinds, your college alma mater, nature, kids, POW or veteran, and then of course the vanity plates. I think they purposely made the official one so ugly that they could make money selling others. At least we still have the county name on them. Since we have 120 counties, often people are more familiar with county names than town names. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Homeless Date: 19 Dec 03 - 12:01 PM a practical reason for having a vanity plate is to make it easier to remember the plate number. Often, when staying at motels or campgrounds, you are asked to put your plate number on the registration for the room/site. With a vanity plate I can just write the number; if we're in the other vehicle, I always have to walk outside to look before I can write it down. |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: CarolC Date: 19 Dec 03 - 12:34 PM Hi Danbert! How've you been? We have one of those. It's defunct now, but it used to be on our elderly Mercury Cougar. It says "NEWFIE" on account of JtS being from Newfoundland. I usually don't like those kind of plates, but I like that one. BTW, I saw a car that had a bunch of glowy lights underneath it, so they illuminated the road under the car. It was very surreal. And also, in this part of the world, it's becoming popular to have hubcaps that spin around like pin-wheels even when the car is standing still. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Midchuck Date: 19 Dec 03 - 01:46 PM In Vermont, a lady was in the news when she asked for the vanity plate, IRISH, and the State wouldn't give it to her - they said they wouldn't allow any racial or ethnic references for fear someone would be offended. No one else could figure out what their point was, and I think she finally went to court and got it. Another guy tried to get 3M TA3 (for the benefit of those in front of him looking in their rear view mirrors) but he didn't get it. Peter. |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Phot Date: 19 Dec 03 - 01:48 PM I got one through no fault of my own. It, was a Triumph Daytona T595, reg plate R339CJW (My initals are CJW). Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Dec 03 - 03:34 PM Here are a couple of neat Canadian license plate possibilities... FAH KYU FAH Q2! I wonder if they would make it through the acceptance process at the vanity licensing bureau? A guy I worked with at a parking kiosk in Orillia used to make up a dirty or derogatory expression out of the letters on every license plate on every car that entered the place, and he never missed a beat. For example...there were a lot of licenses being given out here with AAFV ... on them. That was: "Aaaaaaa...f**kin' vife!" and JRK 101 was "Jerk 101" and YFM ... was "Ya f**kin' moron!" and so on... This was how Jim wiled away the long boring hours at minimum wage. I once read that over 80% of everything most people say in conversation is negative, and I believe it. :-) - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: 'Look at me' vehicle numberplates From: Coyote Breath Date: 19 Dec 03 - 03:50 PM Well I don't mind revealing that I have "vanity" plates on two of my vehicles. The big white van is: COYOTL, The Nahuatl word for coyote (canis latrans) The big yellow Indian Chief (a motorcycle) is: 0 LULU which I say means: "Nothing to Lose" (zero two lu's), not a female name for the bike. When the custom chopper (I'm currently building) is finished it's plate will say: NDN WAR since it is being identified as an Indian Warrior by graphics on the fuel tank, by nature of it's components, and (hopefully) performance. It also honors the spirit of Indian Motorcycle Company employees who are helping to bring their company (and jobs) back and those brave men who resisted the theft of their lands and the desecration of their culture. It all started back in the 1960's when I saw a Rolls Royce over in Marin county (California) which plate read GREED. Sure, it's ego tripping of the most blatant sort. So what? The positive side is; drivers of vanity plated vehicles daren't do naughty things while in their vehicles, they are far too easy to chase down. I really can't see a negative side. You MUST plate your vehicle, regardless. If you can do so in some "creative" way; all the better. BTW I would have asked for COYOTE but someone has had that plate since 1983. CB |
