A bit more
("Raiteachas na Tairngreacht' " is an old vision-song. A beautiful woman comes before the narrator. The woman is a symbol of Ireland and she mentions that "a son of a prince...with the name of Bonaparte" will come and he will help the Irish to drive the Saxons from Ireland.

Who was singer with Danú at the time? If the excellent Ciarán Ó Geallbháin, he probably got it from Áine Uí Cheallaigh and she in turn from Nioclás Tóibín.

I'm off for a week's sailing this morning but will look into this when I get back, if it hasn't been dealt with already.

Regards

I have no Irish but am interested in the differences between Irish and English language songs – so here goes –
I can only find one printed reference to the song, one without translation in Terry Moylan's excellent, 'Age of Revolution'.
Terry's somewhat sparse note to the song which he took from the singing of Aine Ui Cheallaigh, describes it as an Aisling (vision) type.
He says that the reference to peelers in verse four of his version dates it to no earlier than 1814, the year Sir Robert Peel established his police force.
I tried feeding the above version into one of those Irish to English sites – its translation skills are obviously little better than mine – good luck with this.
Perhaps Martin Ryan can help - he knows things!
Jim Carroll

Last night I tlath is weak, to bring justice attrition in a lack of
Yes sees coming to me was the beautiful woman fionnachruth
Promote hair was yellow buclach in layers down to earth with her
Mouth is a voice that she hit the magic she airs the Banban

Is a Gaelic families of dear, this expression is the prediction
No-son prince will come of the fight that for him the name of Bonaparte
The Spanish Emperor is taking guard with Scotland
Those will not be forever happy premises Saxon King find

Without a correct winning gclafomh'll sharpen their father selling them
Is a Gaelic families of dear, this expression is the prediction
And sound will help us all focus is haiteasach
And glaofaim 'to double our assistance' in the rainceanaibh

And seidfim 'horn is biugal, galltrump' first battle outside
The stigma is bleast the powder cores using dust from the English
Is a Gaelic families of dear, this expression is the prediction
Throughout the park you go, your hats altogether furious

Hello Mother Mary is praying for the day went on the foreigner-Puck
The priests, the bishops, the pope is one braithe church
Pray to God every day with the desire to take about Shasanaigh
Is a Gaelic families of dear, this expression is the prediction

Lyrics:

Aréir is mé go tláth lag, go tabhartha tnáite in easpa chirt
Sea dhearcas ag teacht i mo láthair an bhean dob áilne fionnachruth
Bhí gruaig a cinn go búclach buí ina slaoda síos go talamh léi
Is le glór a béil gur bhuail sí an draíocht ar cheolta sí na Banban
Is a chlanna Gael na n-árann, sin é ráiteachas na tairngreacht

Tiocfaidh aon-mhac phrionsa an chomhraic gurb ainm dó siúd Bonaparte
An tImpire is an Spáinneach ag cur gárda leis go hAlbain
Ní bheidh siúd choíche sásta le háitreabh Rí na Sacsan a fháil
Gan buachan cruinn le faobhar a gclaíomh go mbainfidh díol a n-athar dóibh
Is a chlanna Gael na n-árann, sin é ráiteachas na tairngreacht

Tiocfaidh cabhair agus fuaim orainn, is béim go léir haiteasach
Agus glaofaim' ar ár gcúnamh chun dúbailt' ins na rainceanaibh
Agus séidfim 'adharc is biúgal, galltrump' ar dtús an chatha amuigh
Beidh smáil is bleást an phúdair ag baint smúit as croíthe na Sasanach
Is a chlanna Gael na n-árann, sin é ráiteachas na tairngreacht

Le linn dul as an bpáirc daoibh, bainí go leir bhur hataí dhaoibh
Is guí chun Muire Máthair an lá do dhul ar Ghall-phoic
Beidh sagairt, easpaig, bráithe is an Pápa ceann na heaglaise
Ag guí chun Dé gach lá le fonn an fán do chur ar Shasanaigh
Is a chlanna Gael na n-árann, sin é ráiteachas na tairngreacht

Ooops. Not on form today. They're on the CD sleeve notes. It's an Aisling, a vision song:

Aréir, is mé go tláth lag, go tabharta tnáite in easpa chirt
Sea dhearcas ag teacht i mo láthair an bhean dob áilne fionnachruth....

(Gotta watch out for the spéirbhean!)

Would anyone have the words to Raiteachas na Tairngreacht, from Danu's new album, the superb The Road Less Traveled?
